The one fatal mistake that most TV shows make is using TV cameos gratuitously. If the cameo doesn't mean something to the audience and the characters in the show, it's pointless, and little more than a random Stan Lee Appears gag.
On the other hand, too many shows have fallen into the trap of celebrity worship with their cameos.
Having cast members gawk and gape at their celebrity crush as if to reinforce the celebrity's prestige while doing nothing for the universe we enjoy is a waste of talent.
For this list of the top TV cameos worth celebrating, we will focus on iconic cameo appearances that gave the show some unforgettable moments that made TV history.

What better way to give Seinfeld the better ending many feel it deserved than by bringing back the cast and the original set and doing a bit of self-parody?...

A decade after Dexter Morgan sailed off into the sunset storm, he’s back and ready for some new blood. Showtime officially greenlit a “Dexter” revival in October 2020, with the premiere date taking place on November 7, 2021. Michael C. Hall is back, of course, as the adorably geeky Bay Harbor Butcher, aka the Miami, Fl blood splatter analyst/serial killer who focuses his bloodlust on murdering other serial killers. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips is also back as an executive producer of the new episodes. Here’s everything to know about “Dexter: New Blood” Season 9, including the cast and trailer.

We’re just about a month away from the November 7 premiere of “Dexter: New Blood” on Showtime, which will reunite fans with their favorite serial killer. Little is known about the plot of Season 9, except for the fact that Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is now living a secluded life in Iron Lake, New York after faking his death in the 2013 series finale. His sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) will also be a part of the revival, though it’s unclear in what capacity as she died (for real) at the hands of psychopath Oliver Saxon (Darri Ingolfsson) in the final season.
As fans continue to speculate about Carpenter’s mysterious role in “Dexter: New Blood,” let’s take a look at three newly released photos of the former Miami Metro lieutenant.

It’s about bloody time! Die-hard Dexter fans who didn’t love the 2006–13 series’ controversial finale — principled serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) faked his death and went into hiding in Oregon — get a do-over with this 10-episode revival. The former Miami Pd blood spatter expert now resides in idyllic (fictional) Iron Lake, New York, under the name Jim Lindsay (a nod to Dexter novelist Jeff Lindsay). He “is trying to be as innocuous and untempted [to kill] as possible,” explains exec producer Clyde Phillips. (Credit: Seacia Pavao/Showtime) But this truck-stop town “is sort of a Bermuda Triangle of women who go missing.” Which means Dexter’s Dark Passenger — the inner voice that leads him to eliminate bad guys — can’t be ignored. Continues Phillips: “This is Dexter, so people are going to die.” One target: the imposing Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown), who “has too much bad history.” Expect to see a few familiar faces,...

When “Dexter” returns in November after eight years, it will feature very few of the elements from the Showtime drama’s original run. That will include a change to the show’s famous opening credits.
“We haven’t really completely closed the idea of what the new titles are, but they will not [incorporate] the cheekiness of what we had before, the jauntiness and irony of what we had before,” Clyde Phillips, who is returning as showrunner, said. Phillips led the show’s first four seasons, which are considered its golden years by many fans. “The viewer should expect that the title sequence, if there is even a sequence … will be very different from what they’ve seen before.”

Showtime‘s Dexter: New Blood may remain a limited series, the network’s president of entertainment Gary Levine revealed on Tuesday.
“Dexter is a jewel in the crown of Showtime and we didn’t do it justice in the end. That has always been a burr under my saddle,” Levine said during the network’s TCA executive panel. “We’ve always wanted to see if there was a way to do it right and it took a long time to figure out what that was. It took a long time for Michael [C. Hall] to be willing to revisit the role. We’re thrilled to get [Clive] Phillips back. We finally got to a place that I just can’t wait to show the world.”
He added, “We call it a limited series but the rules say it can’t be a limited series if it’s coming from something that was on...

Another longtime Emmy record could fall this year. Well, it could be tied anyway. John Lithgow is nominated for Best Drama Supporting Actor for his turn as Elias Birchard “E.B.” Jonathan on HBO’s 1930s-set remake of “Perry Mason.” Should he walk away a winner come Sept. 19, he’ll tie the great Ed Asner as the most awarded male performer ever with a total of seven Emmys.
Lithgow is just one of two actors from the drama series to have been nominated for an Emmy. The other is also a former winner: Matthew Rhys, who portrays the eponymous defense attorney and is nominated in Best Drama Actor. On the show, which received fairly positive reviews when it debuted but only nabbed four total Emmy bids, Lithgow’s Jonathan is an aging lawyer who acts as a father figure and mentor to Mason.

Michael C. Hall’s Dexter tries to blend in as a townie in the new trailer for Dexter: New Blood, set to premiere November 7th on Showtime.
The 10-episode revival finds Dexter living under an assumed name, Jim Lindsay, while residing in snowy Iron Lake, New York, where he runs a sporting goods store. Although in the new clip Dexter/Jim seems generally well-adjusted, he’s also doing a lot of brooding over the possibility that his real identity might come out, while simultaneously struggling to repress his urge to maim and kill.

Nearly a decade since everyone’s favorite serial killer moved away and became a logger in 2013, Showtime’s Dexter is back—at Comic-Con@Home, at least. The show’s big return to Comic-Con featured Michael C. Hall, series showrunner from seasons 1-4, Clyde Phillips, executive producers Marcos Siega and Scott Reynolds, and Julia Jones, who will make her debut in the limited series as Dexter’s love interest Angela Bishop.
The panelists discussed where fans will find Dexter, a former Miami Metro Police Department forensic technician who moonlights as a notorious serial killer, when the next 10 episodes premiere on Nov. 7 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.

Welcome back Dexter Morgan (or should we say "Jim Lindsey"?).
Showtime released the first trailer during San Diego Comic Con on Sunday for its upcoming revival of "Dexter," which you can watch in the player above.
First thing's first... he's no longer chopping wood up in Oregon.
The revival picks up 10 years after the end of "Dexter," which aired its season finale in 2013. It finds Dexter now living in the small fictional town of Iron Lake in upstate New York. Clancy Brown stars as Kurt Caldwall, the unofficial mayor of the town and the revival's chief adversary. The revival will also feature returning (and deceased) "Dexter" characters such as Jennifer Carpenter's Debra Morgan and John Lithgow's Arthur Mitchell.
The “Dexter” revival is set one decade after the series finale, which is about how much real-life time has passed since then.

Exclusive: Christiana Dell’Anna (Gomorrah), John Lithgow (The Crown), David Morse (The Green Mile), Rolando Villazón (La Bohèmme) and more will star in an Untitled Cabrini Film from Alejandro Monteverde.
The film tells the story of Francesca Cabrini, one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 19th Century, who began with nothing and created the largest multinational charitable empire the world had ever known, her accomplishments equaling those of Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. While Cabrini was faced in her time with the sexism and virulent anti-Italian bigotry of 19th century America, she overcame every obstacle through relentless perseverance and business skill, eventually building schools, orphanages and hospitals that transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide.
The Untitled Cabrini Film also stars Montserrat Espadalé, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Patch Darragh, Jeremy Bobb, Virginia Bocelli, Andrew Polk, and Giampiero Judica.
The Francesca Films pic’s producers include Academy Award and BAFTA Award winner Jonathan Sanger and Leo Severino. Rod Barr wrote the script; he collaborated on the story with TIFF’s People’s Choice Award winner Monteverde.
The film is currently in production in New York; the shoot will wrap up in Rome this fall. The project was the brainchild of financier Eustace Wolfington, whose passion for the story of Francesca Cabrini began over 60 years ago.
“The minute I learned of Cabrini’s life story, I realized this was a story that deserved to be brought to the big screen,” said Wolfington. “As a pioneer of human rights long before today, her story will be an inspiration to today’s pioneers of human rights which makes her story and unprecedented accomplishments as relevant today as ever.”
“As an immigrant myself, I am honored to be able to shine a light on the astonishing story of a true warrior of social justice who transformed the lives of immigrants worldwide,” said Monteverde. “Cabrini was a pioneer of women’s empowerment, making her story as relevant today as in the 1890’s. This picture – like Cabrini herself – is surprising, courageous, gritty… and deeply inspirational.”
“In a time when the achievements of women in every sphere of life have inspired a new generation, it is fascinating to contemplate the work of Francesca Cabrini, an Italian immigrant who came to New York in 1889. She would fit perfectly as a leader in today’s world,” added Sanger.
Christiana Dell’Anna’s film credits include Tensione superficiali, Mr. Happiness and more. She has appeared on the small screen in such series as Gomorrah (HBO Max) and Trust (FX). She’s represented in the U.S. by Cavalry Media, and by Volver Consulenze Artistiche in Italy.
A two-time Oscar nominee, John Lithgow recently earned his 13th Emmy nomination for his supporting turn in HBO’s reimagining of Perry Mason. He’ll next appear in Showtime’s Dexter revival, reprising his role as Arthur Mitchell (aka The Trinity Killer), and in FX’s The Old Man. His recent film credits include Bombshell, Late Night and Pitch Perfect 3. Additional TV credits include The Crown, Trial & Error and 3rd Rock from the Sun. Lithgow is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorney Don Steele at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.
Two-time Emmy nominee David Morse will soon appear in Netflix drama The Chair, opposite Sandra Oh. His recent TV credits include The Good Lord Bird, Blindspot, The Morning Show, The Deuce and Escape at Dannemora. Recent film credits include Thank You for Your Service and Concussion. Morse is repped by UTA, Kipperman Management, Arcieri & Associates, and attorney Diane Golden at Katz Golden Lerner.
Rolando Villazón is an opera singer and director whose credits include Mozart in Prague: Rolando Villazón on Don Giovanni, La Bohèmme and La Traviata. He is repped by Columbia Artists Management.
Monteverde is represented by Sentient Entertainment and attorney Sean A. Marks of Marks Law Group.

John Lithgow is not the only Dexter alum whose dead character would be making a return in the upcoming 10-episode limited series revival on Showtime.
In an interview with Deadline following his Emmy nomination for Perry Mason, Lithgow revealed that fellow co-star Jennifer Carpenter also will be part of the project, reuniting with Lithgow, Dexter star Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips.
“As all Dexter fans know, we saw the end of the Trinity Killer, so that by definition means it’s a flashback,” Lithgow said of how his character would be brought back. “It was just wonderful to rejoin that gang—including Michael and Jennifer Carpenter and Clyde Phillips.”
Dexter, which aired for eight seasons on Showtime between 2006 and 2013, centered on the mild-mannered Dexter Morgan (Hall). By day, Dexter worked as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. By night, he was a serial killer—one who happened to target other murderers.

The secret's out: Daddy's back to killing people. The Dexter revival is well on its way, and we're still reeling a bit from the most recent promo shared by the show's official Twitter account. It features a video of fire engulfing a photo of Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and his baby Harrison, and the caption reads, "Wanna know a secret? Daddy kills people." One of those people that Daddy has killed is Arthur Mitchell, also known as the Trinity Killer, who was played by John Lithgow. The Trinity Killer was responsible for leaving Dexter's wife, Rita (Julie Benz), dead in her bathtub, which Dexter didn't even discover until after Arthur had paid a visit to his kill table and...

Exclusive: John Lithgow is returning to his old Dexter stomping ground.
The multiple Emmy-winning actor is set to make a short but decisive appearance in the Michael C. Hall-led revival coming from Showtime this fall. Awarded his fifth Emmy for the role as the revered but feared “Trinity Killer” in the fourth season of the killer series’ original run, Lithgow’s character was soundly bumped off by Dexter Morgan himself in season-finale episode “The Getaway” back in late 2009.
Which begs the question: How will Lithgow’s Arthur Mitchell will return?

To that end, Lithgow is expected to only film for about a day or so on the L.A.-set production. It is likely that...

Cicely Tyson called her friend Arthur Mitchell soon after learning she’d be honored with an Oscar to celebrate her legendary acting career.
A trailblazer like her, the former ballet dancer accompanied her to the Oscars in 1973, when she was nominated for lead actress in “Sounder.” Tyson starred as the matriarch in a sharecropping family struggling to survive during the Great Depression and went on to star in “Roots,” “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “The Help” and “The Trip to Bountiful.”
“The Oscars were held on his birthday and he escorted me,” recalls Tyson, 93, “still speechless” about the honorary award she will receive Nov. 18. “Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after I tried to explain to him that I have an Oscar now.”
Tyson, the first black woman to win an honorary Oscar, doesn’t know who will accompany her to the Governors Awards ceremony now.

Cameron Britton gave a memorable performance in the Netflix drama series “Mindhunter” as real-life serial killer Ed Kemper. Now he’s an Emmy contender for Best Drama Guest Actor for his role. But will voters embrace him or be turned off by his sociopathic character? Oftentimes the television academy — and all awards voters for that matter — tend to reward roles that are sympathetic, but there’s good news for Britton: voters in this category pick killers more often than you might think.
In the last 20 years the academy has picked so many murderers for Best Drama Guest Actor that you’d think they were a parole board. In 1998 John Larroquette won the award for appearing on “The Practice” in the recurring role of Joey Heric, who manipulated the legal system to get away with cold-blooded murder. Then in 2001 Michael Emerson also won for “The Practice,” where he played William Hinks,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who is the scariest serial killer on TV? You define “scary.” Old and current shows fair game.
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
Landry from “Friday Night Lights.”
Damian Holbrook (@damianholbrook), TV Guide Magazine
Ok, so he wasn’t necessarily a serial killer, but “Nip/Tuck’s” The Carver gave me a serious case of the scareds. After his first appearance near the end of Season 2, the porcelain-masked serial-slashing maniac who was all about slicing up hot people (because “beauty is a curse,” of course!) ran amok in Season 3 and the amount of series-regular characters he went after was kind of unprecedented. Jokers, circus masters and demonic dolls. Which TV characters terrify you? Den Of Geek asked its writers that very question…
The subconscious is a terrible place; dark, mysterious and peopled by spectres from the past. As a bit of a laugh then, we sent our writers journeying into theirs and asked them to drag out any TV terrors they found lurking in the shadows.
Some television fears had been ensconced there since childhood, others were more recent tenants. Some were morally terrifying; human beings with icy hearts capable of atrocities, others were simply… atrocities.
Join us as we count down in order of terror from the sort-of-creepy to the downright terrifying, the 50 TV characters that, for whatever reason, give our writers chills. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, so feel free to fill in gaps by adding your own peculiar television nightmares below…

In America, Halloween is a fun day, an excuse for a party and a close third behind Thanksgiving and Christmas when it comes to annual celebrations. In Britain, it's more a case of shutting your curtains and hoping that the kids down the road don't egg your windows.
But that negative approach to Halloween needs to end now. What we lack in pumpkins and parties, we can make up for with an evening of hiding under the duvet with scary TV shows.
While there might not be much actual horror programming on October 31 (although a new series of Citizen Khan on BBC One is frightening us in a different way), a quick delve into the world of Netflix (other streaming services are available, yadda, yadda) means that there are frights and thrills on tap for anyone who wants to get into the spooky spirit of things.

'Dexter': Who's the best villain ever? Michael C. Hall and co-stars pick their favorite foes -- Poll
Dexter Morgan has been hiding in plain sight for eight seasons on Showtime, and throughout those years, a handful of people have challenged our antihero — but most didn’t live to tell the tale.
At last week’s PaleyFest farewell to Dexter, we asked the show’s cast and producer to name their favorite foes for the serial-killer-with-a-code. We heard one name quite a few times — the Dexter cast is still getting over the damage done by John Lithgow’s Arthur Mitchell, a.k.a. Dexter, Season 8, Episode 5, ‘This Little Piggy’
Written By Scott Reynolds
Directed By Romeo Tirone
Airs Sundays, 8pm on Showtime
Just like an inherently destructive loved one; infuriating you, disappointing you, breaking your heart, only keeping the bond alive with rare flashes of nostalgic familiarity, then finally sucking you back in when the exit door looks inevitable with the palpable suggestion that things, finally, will be as great as they can be. Such is the existence of the loyal fan, forever questioning whether that connection you share with a material that once seemed life affirming is an irrationally emotional one. It is apt that last night’s episode of Dexter vaguely centered on the significance of family, because at times this show seems, appropriately enough, like the proverbial black sheep.
After the intellectually confusing previous installment, ‘This Little Piggy’ had a severe weight of expectation on it shoulders and for the most part,...

Dexter, Season 8, Episode 2, ‘Every Silver Lining’
Written By Manny Coto
Directed By Michael C. Hall
Airs Sundays, 8pm on Showtime
Via an old Vcr tape recorded onto a DVD, we see a concerned Harry Morgan in full uniform at an office belonging to a renowned neuropsychiatrist, sharing details that go far deeper than personal. His ten year old adopted son is continuing to show terrifyingly monstrous tendencies, fascination with death and bloodshed, and every attempt he has made to shock him out of his murderous reverie has backfired on him. The shrink in question, as you would expect, is Dr. Evelyn Vogel, who has become Harry’s one and only confidant on the subject of a crisis dominating and destroying his life, and the boy they speak of is Dexter. While Dex and Vogel watch this old video tape, we watch a show taking a hugely risky gambit in its final lap; the retcon.

This upcoming Sunday, Jun 30th, Showtime's 'Dexter' returns for its 8th and final season! And one of the things I’ve always loved about the show is the time it takes to set up its key story threads for the entire season; meaning it usually takes a good 3-4 episodes before I get a feel for the overall direction they’re heading in. And with that, there are often interested side stories that seem prominent at first but then never pan out. Now, I’m sure there are plenty of plot threads you’re all wondering about – whatever happened to Lumen? Is Jordan Chase presumed dead, or in hiding? Whatever happened to that hottie Masuka started dating while setting up Dexter’s bachelor party? Inquiring minds want to know. But for right now, here are 6 of my personal curiosities. With the final season fast approaching, might some of...

The teaser trailer for Dexter’s eight season is an ominous reminder of just how many people have met their end in the show’s seven season run. All the names are there: those of Dexter’s victims and more consequential names like Arthur Mitchell, James Doakes, Rita Bennett and, the latest, Maria Laguerta.
But how many more will be added to that list? And, more importantly, will (and should) Dexter Morgan join the ranks of the dead prior to the Season 8 bow, which will presumably be its last?
The irony with anti-hero drama has always been that we (as viewers) fall in love with an incredibly conflicted character, who typically has committed unspeakable acts. We get a vicarious thrill in watching them do what most of us could never even fathom doing (of course, I’m assuming that none of you work for Miami Metro while moonlighting as a...

Well, that was unexpected. Though I wasn’t sure how the writers would have kept Isaak and Dexter playing their cat and mouse games for another few episodes without it getting stale, I definitely did not think his plot would be more or less resolved by the end of the ninth episode of the season. It’s hard to imagine how Phil Bosso, the arson investigator who is most likely the phantom firebug killer, such a seemingly shallow and almost cartoonish killer in comparison to Isaak, will possibly serve as a necessary or suitable follow up to the fallen former Koshka leader.
Isaak will no doubt go down in the memories of Dexter fans as not only one of the best villains, but one of the best characters period. That is because, like much of the seventh season, Isaak, in addition to being ruthless and charismatic,...

“Hannah used to think I was somethin’ special. Now she sees me as just a killer. Y’know what? She’s not wrong. Now there’s just one more person I need to kill.” The most important aspect of this episode wasn’t Deb’s reaction to the realization that her brother is indeed a very accomplished mass murderer, it wasn’t Laguerta slowly catching up, it wasn’t even Dex getting close to Louis and vice versa, it wasn’t Angel and Quinn hangin’ out at the Fox Hole, and it wasn’t the more proper introduction than last week of the season’s Big Bad, Ukrainian crime syndicate boss, Isaak Sirko. The collection of scenes most pertinent to Dexter was the one comprised of those between Dex and convict Wayne Randall.

The shining star of Showtime’s original programming, Dexter, the series which follows the trials and tribulations of a serial killer trying to balance family life and a career in law enforcement with murdering people, has been towing the line between disturbingly affecting and procedural mediocrity for over six seasons.
Whether you can no longer stand the sound of Michael C. Hall’s spell-it-out-for-you voiceovers, the sight of Deb pining for father (and brother) figures, and Laguerta’s leopard prints, or can’t wait to see how much further Dex can descend into moral ambivalence without blowing his cover (like me), no one can deny the success of the series. Therefore, to enrage haters and keep fans satiated until the show returns for its seventh season this fall, myself and a frequent commenter on my reviews of the sixth season, Christopher Elphick, have compiled a list of the best Dexter episodes thus far.

Dexter season 6 returns to slice up its sixth entry with this week’s midway point “Just Let Go,” as our favorite serial killer struggles with his inner darkness in the wake of Brother Sam’s shooting, and Deb tries to keep her head above water with new responsibilities. The big sure-to-be-talked-about twist ending of “Just Let Go” certainly shocks its audience, but only time and care will determine how badly the episode rocks the boat of an otherwise strong season.
You know, as a critic I have the occasional access to early screeners, in this case having seen “Just Let Go” a number of weeks ago, but because of leaked reports on the episode I went in knowing that the final moments delivered a shocking twist that would polarize viewers, and Dexter fans alike. Dexter season 6 returns to slice up a third outing with this week’s “Smokey and the Bandit,” as our favorite serial killer hunts down one of his childhood inspirations and Deb settles into the role of the Miami Metro Lieutenant. Those looking for progress in the major storylines this season won’t find much to go on, but even stand-alone Dexter has something to offer, if only an amusing distraction.
I mentioned in my review of the premiere that first and foremost about Dexter’s sixth season was a renewed sense of energy and fun, something “Smokey and the Bandit” certainly runs with as we watch Dexter coddling retiree Walter Kenney to prove his identity as legendary serial killer the “Tooth Fairy.” There’s plenty of humor to be mined from Dexter partnered with a grumpy old pervert, but I kept coming back to the notion that the Tooth Fairy...

Dexter, the show and the character, has gone through some rough terrain the last couple of seasons. While Rita's death put a breathtaking, brilliant and horrific stamp on the end of season 4, most fans agreed that Dexter season 5 paid the price with a mopey Dexter more interested in self-pity than serial-killing, a group of girl-murdering gang rapists whose methods were scary but sloppy, and who could never approach the creepy evil genius of one Arthur Mitchell (John Lithgow), and ... Lumen (Julia Stiles), probably the dullest and least inspiring conspirator Dexter's ever had, especially for a character named after light.
But that was then, and this is season 6 -- a whole year since the Lumen storyline, and a clean slate for Dexter (again, the show and the character). Longtime fans have often griped that each season of Dexter is self-contained; that no matter the mess Dexter makes, the show always...

Recipients hail from various branches of the American performance art world — including film, stage, music, and dance — even though performers more closely associated with British show business have managed to sneak in every now and then, e.g., Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Pete Townshend. Since recipients are supposed to attend the Washington, D.C., ceremony in order to take home their Kennedy awards, Doris Day has remained unhonored by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Katharine Hepburn kept putting it off until she finally relented in 1990. (Irene Dunne, see above photo, was one who managed to be honored though absent due to ill health.) Ginger Rogers, for her part, was present at the ceremony, but her films with Fred Astaire weren't — because Astaire's widow, Robyn Astaire, demanded payment for the televised clips. There were those of us who thought it couldn’t be done … There is no way, we reasoned, that they could possibly improve on Dexter Season 4. John Lithgow’s florid, dramatic performance as Arthur Mitchell, The Trinity Killer, couldn’t be topped. Could it?
Well, the show’s makers played very clever – they didn’t try to top themselves – instead they took the show in a different direction and, astonishingly, season 5 of Dexter – available now on Blu-ray - is every bit the worthy successor.
The show begins exactly where season 4 left off – with Dexter’s discovery of his son sitting in a pool of blood just as he himself had as an infant. The ending of season 4 was inevitable but still, the fact that they actually went ahead and did it came like a hammer blow. It was brutal and merciless.

Fate is a cruel mistress to Michael C. Hall, or so it would seem. Or perhaps, Showtime.
Dexter's fifth season was nearly derailed by the sad news of Michael C. Hall's battle with cancer, and now TVLine has learned that leads Michael C. Showtime boss David Nevins reveals that “There will be a microscope on the Deb/Dexter relationship this season. Over time you’re going to see that relationship evolve and change, no questions about it.” When last we saw Dexter and Deb, the pair nearly discovered each other at the scene of Jordan Chase's murder as Debra grew one step closer to uncovering her brother's murderous hobbies.

Ignoring for a moment the not-so-small matter of an unknown bride, the identity of Barney's (Neil Patrick Harris) dad on "How I Met Your Mother" is possibly the biggest unanswered question of the series -- and definitely of Season 6. But on Mar. 21, we'll finally come face-to-face.
Emmy and Tony winner John Lithgow makes his first appearance in "Legendaddy" as the Barney's estranged father, Jerry. And speaking with Zap2it about his two scheduled appearances, Lithgow explains that the serious themes explored this season keep coming with his cameo.
"It is very intense," Lithgow tells us. "If this weren't a comedy, it would be 'East of Eden' or something. He's the lost father. There's a pool of serious emotional stuff underpinning all of the comedy. [Barney] is what he is, in so many ways, because he was abandoned by his father. We make comedy out of that, but...

Could Dexter be on the road to redemption? When season four ended with the death of Rita at the hands of the Trinity Killer, it left season five as an open book. How would Dexter react? What would his future hold? Would it make him a more hardened killer, more prone to mistakes, would his personal experience cause him to break "the code?" All of these things swirled around in my head, but I can't honestly say I expected him to start down the path to redemption.
His very first thought after finding Rita in the bloody bathroom was guilt; that his choice to "learn" from Arthur Mitchell instead of killing him when he had the chance is what caused her death. His next move was to listen to The Dark Passenger and get revenge on whomever he could to assuage the guilt he felt. Previously, Dexter had been attempting...

Rest in peace, Stan Liddy. We hardly knew ya. As the fifth season of Dexter reached a butt-kicking crescendo (and the edges of our seats became more wore out) with Hop a Freighter, we’re all left to partake in the bittersweet emotions that come with the end of a season. Of course, it's great to see all the story arcs come to heart-pounding fruition, but that typically means we have to bid adieu to a great character that has crept close to Dexter's secret. In that past, that lineup of Dark Passenger foes has included The Ice Truck Killer, James Doakes, Miguel Prado and, of course, Arthur Mitchell, The Trinity Killer. With tonight's episode, we add another sad soul to that impressive roster: Stan Liddy, Peter Weller's grimy and utterly awesome disgraced cop, who met his end, literally, at the sharp side of Dexter’s knife. Say...

The second episode of the fifth season of Dexter opens with our favorite serial killer swimming in a pool, while his voiceover says ‘it’s said there are seven stages of grief. I suppose killing someone with my bare hands in a men’s room was my way of working through the anger stage. Whatever the other six stages are, I don’t have time for them, cause now I’m a full-time dad. Once the kids and I are back together, it’ll all be fine.’

[voiceover about finding doll parts in his freezer] "I suppose I should be upset, even feel violated, but I'm not. No, in fact, I think this is a friendly message, like 'Hey, wanna play?' and yes I want to play. I really really do.

What You Should Know
Season four of Dexter – Showtime’s killer hit that has been nominated for an Emmy each of the last three years – may very well have been shows finest, and after the shocking ending, we’ve all been counting down the days until season five.
Get out your tools and organize your blood slides, the time has come.
Season four ended in such a shocking manner, I’m sure I don’t need to remind you. However, it’s worth discussing anyway. When we left Dexter Morgan, (three-time Emmy nominee Michael C. Hall, now cancer-free) he had spent all season learning about, studying, following and getting to know the Trinity Killer, Arthur Mitchell, played by John Lithgow who deservedly took home Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for the role. Trinity was my...
