Tolkien’s literary series in the 1930s or Peter Jackson’s trilogies in the 2000s, the franchise has brought the world of epic high fantasy tales involving Elves, hobbits, kings, and wizards just a little bit closer to our fingertips.

This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" season 3, episode 10, "Identity Crisis."
After last week's episode of "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" saw Asajj Ventress return from the grave, the show took a pivot this week. Instead of visiting Clone Force 99 at all, "Identity Crisis" takes us back to Mount Tantiss and focuses on Emerie Karr.
Karr, who's voiced by "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" alum Keisha Castle-Hughes, is another female clone of Jango Fett, albeit much older than Omega. Introduced in previous seasons of "The Bad Batch," she's thus far been part of the crew on Mount Tantiss working alongside Dr. Hemlock on Operation Necromancer. She was also the one who gave Omega back her makeshift Lula doll at the beginning of season 3, sowing seeds that are paid off in this episode. The "Identity Crisis" the episode's title refers to is Emerie's, as...

StudioCanal is teaming up with French production outfit WTFilms on a slate of European genre films.
The agreement will see StudioCanal and WTFilms collaborate in the development, production and distribution of action, thriller, science fiction and horror movie over a period of at least two years.
StudioCanal will act as a co-producer and distributor for WTFilms projects selected during that time.
The new collobration sprang from StudioCanal’s successful partnership with WTFilms on Xavier Gens’ action thriller Mayhem!, which was a fantasy festivals hit last year and was picked up by IFC Films for the U.S.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 47 years since we first witnessed the adventures of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but across the nine-movie Skywalker saga, two standalone movies, a multitude of TV series, and one questionable Holiday Special, we’ve learned it’s a big ol’ galaxy out there. With enough characters to fill a Death Star, it’s inevitable that not every player in this grand space opera would get the same attention as Luke, Han, and Leia.
In fact, the franchise has allowed a few characters to slip to the sidelines. From major players who were discarded into the trash compactor to those who didn’t resonate with fans and were quietly pushed to the side, here are 12 Star Wars characters who deserved better.

Spoilers for "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" season 3 premiere, episodes 1-3 "Confined," "Paths Unknown," and "Shadows of Tantiss," follow.
With the three-episode third season premiere of "Star Wars: The Bad Batch," the creative team behind the show is doubling down on its connections to the rest of the "Star Wars" saga and connecting directly into the ninth installment of the Skywalker story.
In these episodes, we finally learn why the Empire so desperately needs the Omega — a female clone of Jango Fett — and it's not just to keep her Kaminoan handlers working effectively. There's a darker, more sinister reason for it and it threads effectively through the storyline of "The Mandalorian" and terminates in the revelations we get about the survival of Darth Sidious in "The Rise of Skywalker."
A lot of it comes down to two things: an M-count and something called Project Necromancer.

The original 1977 "Star Wars" is a miracle of a film. George Lucas' blockbuster could have gone wrong at any moment for a variety of reasons, yet it not only got made and released but became a monumental success (spawning one of the biggest movie franchises ever). Part of why the film and its first two sequels remain so impressive all these decades later is their simple story, vast worldbuilding, groundbreaking special effects, and impeccable casting of mostly little-known actors who would go on to become huge after the films hit theaters.
That sentiment extends to the greater franchise, which has launched several careers and given small roles to actors who would eventually break out in a big way. That's not to say the original "Star Wars" didn't feature any famous actors at the time, of course, be it Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing in the original trilogy, or Samuel L Jackson,...

"Arcane" is one of the best animated shows of the past decade, a masterclass in adapting and reinterpreting a popular franchise for a different medium. Studio Fortiche delivered one of the most stunning pieces of animation in years with this show, which draws from the world of the hugely popular video game franchise "League of Legends."
The story follows a group of characters across the socioeconomic spectrum in the dual city of Piltover and Zaun. They are caught in the middle of a revolution when the discovery of a century is made — arcane technology, which is essentially magic. The acting ensemble in Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is nothing short of spectacular. Younger actors including Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom became stars while the cast was peppered with veteran thespians, too, including Sir Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, and John Rhys-Davies.
British actors such as Sean Bean and Andy Serkis, American stars like Sean Astin and Viggo Mortensen, and Australian performers including Cate Blanchett and David Wenham all melded together to breathe life into Middle Earth. The shocking thing, however, is that only one actor landed an Oscar nomination for their work in the esteemed trilogy. That was McKellen, who was nominated in 2002 for playing Gandalf the Grey in the first movie, “The Fellowship of the Ring.” But so many more actors could and should have been nominated for their work in Jackson’s film series. Here are just five such cases.

NBCUniversal has found its permanent lifestyle and documentary chief.
Rachel Smith has been promoted to EVP, Unscripted Content, Lifestyle & Documentaries. She replaces Rod Aissa, who left in June.
Smith has been doing the role on an interim basis since Aissa’s departure. It took a moment after the restructure that saw Donna Langley promoted to oversee the television side in addition to the film division that led to the departure of Susan Rovner, who had been figuring out whether to hand Smith the role on a permanent basis or start an outside search.

There’s plenty to look forward to in Hulu’s incoming slate, including the latest “American Horror Story” installment, BAFTA winner “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and new “The Kardashians.” But unfortunately, the streamer has to lose to gain, and new content means a library cleanout.
Throughout the month, Hulu will lose nearly 100 movies and series to make room, including multiple entries in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” franchises, Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and many others.

In the era of streaming consolidation, as media companies from Warner Bros. Discovery to Paramount Global to Disney are all finding new ways to house their content in one centralized service, it can be a fraught exercise to launch a new subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, especially one that is aiming to appeal to a very narrow audience. However, after becoming a major player in the European streaming market, Viaplay launched in the United States in late February, looking to carve out a unique niche in an under-served corner of the streaming space.

The “Angry Birds” universe just became one series bigger. Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Kids+ has picked up “Angry Birds Mystery Island” to series from Eric Rogers (Futurama) and Titmouse.
“We’re excited to work with Amazon to add a new chapter to the Hatchlings’ story in ‘Angry Birds Mystery Island,’” said Rovio’s head of Brand Licensing, Hanna Valkeapää-Nokkala. “I’m sure fans of the Hatchlings will be eager to see them in their own series, with speaking voices for the first time.”
The 24-episode first season will follow three new hatchlings — Mia, Rosie, and Buddy — and a foreign-exchange piglet named Hamylton on their all-expenses-paid island getaway, where they find themselves mistakenly catapulted onto an uncharted island. (Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we revisit the last time a crowd-pleasing, action-heavy genre film swept the Academy Awards with "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.")
I'm not breaking any new ground here by pointing out that, traditionally, action movies haven't fared all that well at the Academy Awards. When "Mad Max: Fury Road," arguably the greatest of all time, could handily win most of the technical, below-the-line awards but be denied any of the more "prestigious" honors back in 2016, well, that kind of says it all. The fully-ingrained genre bias within the voting body might finally have started to melt away in recent history, as evidenced by "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and its delightfully strong performance at this year's awards, but certain films managed to...

"Dungeons & Dragons," and tabletop RPGs in general, are some of the most fun you can do with a group. The crafting of a fantasy world and the improvised telling of a story as a community is exhilarating, and it's no surprise that livestream campaigns of these games have become so popular in recent years. As time-consuming as the games can be, they offer long-form storytelling that can never be replicated, because no two tables and no two campaigns are the same.
Of course, there are "Dungeons & Dragons" livestreams and then there's "Critical Role," a livestream show where a group of voice actors, led by Matt Mercer, play a game of "D&d." The show started streaming in 2015 and it quickly grew to titanic levels of popularity, with millions of views and subscribers. This article contains spoilers for the entirety of Lost.
ABC’s classic genre hit Lost is remembered fondly in the annals of TV for many reasons. The J.J. Abrams co-created series (that was eventually shepherded by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse) understood the fundamentals of its storytelling mission well. The characters were satisfyingly complicated, the philosophy was on point, and the mysteries were intriguing.
And *whispers* guess what: the ending was good. But we can argue that particular point some other day. Because right now, it’s time to talk about another, and perhaps the most important, reason why Lost was remembered fondly: its dedication to near constant shocking twists and turns.
As an episodic TV series in the mid-2000s, before the streaming binge model took off, Lost needed a way to keep viewers interested in returning for its sprawling sci-fi saga week after week. And the formula it...

Forget "Star Wars," forget "The Matrix," forget "The Godfather." Only one film franchise successfully delivers the goods from start to finish — Peter Jackson's magnificent "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's acclaimed novels, this staggering film series remains one of the most astonishing accomplishments in motion picture history thanks to its wondrous visuals, exciting battles, emotional story, and colorful characters.
Indeed, it boggles the mind to think "The Fellowship of the Ring" blasted into theaters over 20 years ago! The franchise went on to earn billions of dollars at the box office and a treasure trove of awards. "The Return of the King," the final entry released in December of 2003, won Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards, becoming the first fantasy film to take home such honors. Moonhaven is now not returning to AMC+ for a second season after all. The streaming service has reversed the decision made in July to renew the futuristic thriller series. At the time, AMC Networks said that it was the most-watched AMC+ exclusive series. The show's cancellation is reportedly due to dramatic cost-cutting moves at AMC Networks.
Starring Emma McDonald, Dominic Monaghan, Amara Karan, Ayelet Zurer, Joe Manganiello, Kadeem Hardison, and Yazzmin Newell, the sci-fi series was created by Peter Ocko. It's set 100 years into the future at a colony on the moon.

AMC+ has canceled its sci-fi series “Moonhaven,” with the subscription video streaming service reversing its decision just four months ago to renew it for a second season.
The second season from creator and showrunner Peter Ocko was set to span six episodes and return to AMC+ in 2023. The cancellation comes amid programming write-downs and “large-scale layoff” at AMC Networks.
Upon its renewal in July, Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said in a statement, “This is such an engaging and entertaining series, brilliantly conceived and run by Peter. The story is suspenseful, provocative and prescient, and features a phenomenal cast that delivers mesmerizing performances. What Peter and the team are crafting for Season 2 is next level, and the fans will be thrilled.”

The moon colony is closing down as AMC+ will not proceed with a second season of Moonhaven. Word of the cancellation comes four months after the dystonic sci-fi series was renewed for a second season and days after AMC Networks announced sweeping cost-cutting measures as CEO Christina Spade stepped down, which included laying off 20 of its U.S. staff, and write-downs for up to 475 million as it restructures its business. In a SEC filing, AMC Networks said that “programming assessments pertain to a broad mix of owned and licensed content, including legacy television series and films that will no longer be in active rotation on the company’s linear or digital platforms.”

Bernard Hill, the actor best known to “Lord of the Rings” fans around the world as King Théoden, hit out at Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” in a recent interview with Metro. “The Rings of Power” aired its eight-episode first season on Amazon Prime Video this fall. When asked if he watched the show, Hill snapped back, “No, not interested.”
“It’s a money-making venture and I’m not interested in watching that or being in it,” Hill said. “Good luck to them and all that stuff but it’s not like the real thing.”
Hill was then asked if “The Lord of the Rings” franchise should’ve ended after Peter Jackson wrapped his original trilogy with “The Return of the King,” to which the actor responded, “Completely, yes.”
