Happy Campers director Amy Nicholson with Anne-Katrin Titze: “There are times when you get lucky and you get magic.”
I first met Amy Nicholson in 2013 when I was on the jury of the inaugural First Time Fest with Gay Talese, the B-52’s Fred Schneider, and Killer Films’ Christine Vachon. Amy’s documentary, Zipper: Coney Island's Last Wild Ride, won our Outstanding Achievement in Editing Award (by John Young and Jonah Moran): “Fast-paced editing that captures, in a balanced way, a story about humanity in an age of greed. The editing works like the Zipper itself, connecting the ride with the story of Coney Island.”
Amy Nicholson often places the people side-by-side, Wes Anderson style.
In Happy Campers, a highlight of the 14th edition of Doc NYC, we are taken to the Inlet View Rv Park campground on Chincoteague Island in Virginia. Nicholson often places the people side-by-side, Wes Anderson style,...

Perhaps one of the most resonating sounds of last year was when people at home, after weeks of lockdown anguish and abject fear of the unknown in a brand-new pandemic, was the joyful shriek heard ‘round the nation when Disney+ announced that the cinema-bound film of the Broadway juggernaut “Hamilton” would be instead be viewable on TV screens on the July 4th week of 2020. This led to a massive spike in Disney downloads and opened up the conversation for the upside of easy access to Broadway entertainment, particularly in a time when nobody could physically attend a show.
“In March 2020, two weeks before the lockdown, we began a process to think about what we wanted to look at and how we wanted to finish the film,” says he movie’s editor Jonah Moran. “Then, we basically took a two-week hiatus while everyone figured out what was going on in the world,...

What exactly is Disney+’s filmed version of “Hamilton”? Is it akin to a documentary, with a film crew observing the performance in the same way as its live audience? Or is it a narrative film, where the set just happens to be the stage of Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre?
When talking about painstakingly produced, filmed versions of stage productions like this, co-executive producers Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick of RadicalMedia offer some novel terminology: cinematic interpretation.
“Part of what makes something a cinematic interpretation is the planning, the preparation, the attention to detail brought to these, and treating them as a separate work. When we first sat down with Lin[-Manuel Miranda] and Tommy [director Thomas Kail] and Jeffrey Seller, the producer, the first question was understanding their vision for what they wanted to achieve with a filmed version of this incredible piece of art they had made,” Sirulnick, RadicalMedia’s president of entertainment,...

The 40-year-old playwright/actor/director/producer has spent the previous week watching Hamilton — the musical about one of our nation’s founding fathers that went from off-Broadway hit to Broadway gamechanger to cultural phenomenon — once again become a heavily debated, must-see national obsession, courtesy of a four-year-old idea. Back in 2016, when...
