PGA Milestone Award Honoree Toby Emmerich On How Warner Bros. & New Line ‘Hits ‘Em Where They Ain’t’
In presenting the Producers Guild of America’s Milestone Award to Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich tonight, A Star Is Born director and star Bradley Cooper shared his experiences about the studio boss that underscored Emmerich’s innate ability to gamble on raw talent, and win.
Not only did Emmerich take a chance on having a young Cooper cast in Wedding Crashers back in 2005, but the studio boss rolled the dice on the actor again when he asked to make the fourth remake of a movie as a first-time director-writer with a pop singer who hadn’t previously starred in a major studio motion picture.
“He took a huge swing [on me], the same as he trusted [Wedding Crashers director] David Dobkin,” Cooper said tonight.
Even more sublime for Cooper was how Emmerich allowed him to change the ending of A Star Is Born halfway through production “against all logic and mass market research,...

Two months shy of his 80th birthday, music industry veteran Doug Morris is vacating his seat on CBS Corp.’s board of directors. The announcement came Sept. 9 on the heels of news that Les Moonves was stepping down as chairman and CEO of CBS amid a cascade of sexual assault allegations.
Morris, the only executive to have held a chief position at each of the three major music groups, joined the board in 2007 when he was chairman and CEO of Vivendi’s Umg. Last year Morris collected some $332,000 in compensation and stock, according to an SEC filing by CBS, for his service on the board.
Morris spent 2011 through 2017 as CEO of Sony Music, home to Adele, Bruce Springsteen and Tony Bennett, among many others. His first ascent to the top of the C-suite came in 1994 when Morris took on the role of president and COO of Warner Music U.S.

Jon Platt, Chairman and CEO of Warner/Chappell Music, today announced that Jay-z will be joining him in L.A. for the Oct. 11 City of Hope gala supporting the acclaimed nonprofit clinical research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases.
The visionary music mogul and twenty-one-time Grammy Award-winning rapper, producer, and Warner/Chappell songwriter will present the prestigious Spirit of Life award to Platt. It was recently announced that Pharrell Williams will host the star-studded event.
Platt said, “It’s no secret that I don’t like being the center of attention, that’s for the songwriters, but when I accept the Spirit of Life award this fall, I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather have presenting it. Jay is unquestionably one of the most giving and genuine people I know, not to mention one of the greatest songwriters on the planet. I’m lucky to call him my brother.

Ever since its primitive beginnings as “song plugging,” radio promotion at record labels has been a virtual boy’s club, a haven for hucksters and quasi-thugs who, in the Wild West days of the music business depicted in Fredric Dannen’s 1991 book “Hit Men,” famously plied programmers with payola, drugs and worse in exchange for airplay.
Few women managed to penetrate the upper echelons of that macho sanctuary, but through the years there were exceptions, most notably the grand dames of record promotion: Atlantic Records Evp Andrea Ganis, who started at the label in 1980 as director of secondary pop promotion, and Interscope Geffen A&M president of promotion Brenda Romano, a 23-year veteran at the house Jimmy Iovine built. Other female promotion execs rose to head their own labels, from the late Epic Records president Polly Anthony to the label’s current chief Sylvia Rhone, along with current Atlantic Records chairman...

Shari Redstone’s National Amusements has returned fire at CBS, suing Leslie Moonves and most of the CBS board of directors as the battle for control of the company escalates.
The 66-page complaint filed Tuesday by National Amusements Inc. (Nai) in Delaware Chancery Court seeks to block the CBS board’s effort to dilute Nai’s overwhelming voting control in the company. The complaint also challenges the legality of Moonves’ severance package, asserting that the rich pact was never reviewed by the full CBS board. The Nai lawsuit follows CBS’ stunning decision to file suit May 14 against its controlling shareholder, claiming that Nai’s agenda in pursuing a merger of CBS and Viacom was detrimental to the interests of other CBS shareholders.
“As Nai’s complaint makes clear there was no ‘threat’ or ‘interference,’ and indeed there was no action that could possibly warrant the CBS directors’ unprecedented, unjustified, and...

In a boon for Universal Music Group—and C.E.O. Doug Morris (right), No. 96 on the New Establishment—it was announced late last week that the company was entering into a deal with YouTube and its owner, Google, to create Vevo, an online music-video hub for people, content owners, and advertisers that will feature Universal artists. Users will be able to access the service via a YouTube channel; later this year a separate Web site (powered by YouTube technology) will also launch. This is a landmark event, given the weak state of the music industry and its combative relationship with YouTube. Music videos are one of the most popular features on the video-sharing Web site, but record labels often have the videos pulled over licensing issues. Vevo, which those involved have likened to an Internet MTV (that is, when the cable channel actually played videos), will allow Universal to...

NEW YORK -- The mood of music industry executives and observers has turned more optimistic and bullish -- or at least so it seemed at the annual Billboard Music & Money Symposium here Thursday. In the same forum last year, former Sony BMG CEO Andrew Lack, who recently was pushed into the chairman post, expressed doubt over the near-term outlook for music industry momentum, proclaiming that "three to four years from now, we are lucky if we land where we were two years ago." However, this year's event heard some cautiously optimistic tones. After increasing revenue by 1.5% at his firm in 2005 to $5.8 billion with profits of $570 million, Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Doug Morris said he expected further erosion of the physical CD business and increase of the digital business over the next five years.
PARIS -- Universal Music Group, the world's largest record company, said Thursday that it was well-poised to transform itself from a "record company" to a "music entertainment company" by finally being able to take advantage of the technological changes that have aided illegal downloads and blighted the music industry in recent years. Addressing a group of analysts and investors in London, UMG executives, including chairman and CEO Doug Morris and president and chief operating officer Zach Horowitz, said existing digital businesses will be "the engine of growth for the next several years." The executives said that UMG, part of Vivendi Universal, did not intend to embrace one business model for the future, but would instead "aggressively pursue all avenues" to maximize profits. "New opportunities will emerge to monetize our assets and create new revenue streams," the company predicted.
