With its scathing social satire, raunchy humor and frequent use of the controversial N-word, “Blazing Saddles” got mixed reviews upon its release February 7, 1974. Nonetheless, it galloped to the top of the box office and earned three Oscar nominations, and set new standards for comedy films with its irreverence, spoofs and just plain silliness. Some reviewers did get the joke from the beginning, including Roger Ebert, who awarded it four out of four stars, saying it’s “a crazed grab bag of a movie that does everything to keep us laughing except hit us over the head with a rubber chicken.” On its 50th anniversary, we look back at how “Blazing Saddles” has endured as one of the greatest and most beloved comedies of all time.

While it didn’t hit North American shores until a year later, Japanese gamers got their taste of 16-bit power at home with the Sega Mega Drive on this day back in 1988. Once it did arrive in North America, thanks in part to Sega of America’s marketing campaign, and its decision to cater towards a more mature and “cool” audience over Nintendo’s kid friendly approach, the Mega Drive/Genesis for a time had the upper hand in the “console wars” of the 90s. The results of Sega’s efforts? In addition to having superior sports games compared to the Snes, Mega Drive/Genesis fans received their fair share of horror games, which weren’t bound by Nintendo’s often draconian code of censorship.
So, much like with the Snes, here’s a sampling of some of those genre titles that Sega fans can dive into for a trip...

Angela Bassett may have gone home empty handed at the Oscars in March, but the two-time nominee will be getting a golden statuette this year after all – and in very good company too.
In November, Bassett, Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton will receive honorary Oscars at the Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday.
Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of the Sundance Institute’s Artist Programs, will also be given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the untelevised event.

“We are really proud to be a part of ‘Good Afternoon,’ and it’s been really exciting to see how it has sort of taken on a life outside of the film,” says songwriter Benj Pasek about the musical number from the film “Spirited” that has made the Oscars shortlist for Best Original Song. “The idea was actually pitched originally by Ryan Reynolds to say, what if actually this term really in the 1800s did mean Fu.” We talked to Pasek as part of our “Meet the Experts” songwriters panel. Like a too-generous parent on Christmas morning, “Spirited” keeps doling out the shiny presents long after the recipients are sated. But if there’s a genre that begs to be maximalist, it’s a musical comedy with its roots in Charles Dickens; it’s not so much whether or not you like what “Spirited” has to offer but how much of it you can take in one sitting.
The whole “one sitting” concept may be an outdated one, since this is a film that’s going to live its life (and its Christmases Yet to Come) on Apple TV+, where there’s always a pause button. But viewers who can see “Spirited” projected on the big screen absolutely should, if only to fully appreciate the splashy (sometimes in a literal sense) choreography from Chloe Arnold, one of the film’s true MVPs.

Apple Original Films released the first teaser trailer for the holiday musical comedy Spirited starring Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell. The film takes a different approach to the classic A Christmas Carol story, with the teaser introducing Reynolds as its version of Scrooge and Ferrell as the Ghost of Christmas Present who has a problem remembering he’s first “save’s” name.

Will Ferrell has long been a Christmas staple as Buddy the Elf, but this year, he’s back as a different character: a ghost. Specifically, he’s Ryan Reynolds’ Ghost of Christmas Present in the first trailer for “Spirited.”
The holiday film, set to hit theaters and Apple TV+ this November, will show off Reynolds’ and Ferrell’s singing and dancing chops, as it is a musical. Unfortunately, we don’t get any of their voices in the teaser, but we do get some tap dancing. Apparently, Ryan Reynolds’ character doesn’t actually know how to tap dance, he’s just a quick study of Will Ferrell.
It might appear that “Spirited” is a sort of sequel to the original “A Christmas Carol” — though technically, it’s just a new reimagining — as Ferrell himself is the very same Ghost of Christmas Present that helped Ebenezer Scrooge. He explains to Reynolds that,...

Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell team for a spirited take on A Christmas Carol in the first teaser for their upcoming holiday movie musical.
On Wednesday, Apple TV+ dropped a video preview for Spirited, which sees Reynolds starring as Clint Briggs, a Scrooge-like character visited on Christmas Eve by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.
Ferrell plays the Ghost of Christmas Present, who has the tables turned on him by Briggs, with the ghostly host ultimately reexamining his own past, present and future. The minute-and-a-half teaser is light on plot but does offer a glimpse of the story’s colorful and comedic take on the Charles Dickens classic, told from the perspective of the ghosts.

Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds are ringing in the holidays with a new musical. Apple TV+ has released the first teaser for “Spirited,” an upcoming Christmas movie that sees the two comedic actors teaming up — and squaring off in a tap-dancing battle.
Based on Charles Dickens’ classic novella “A Christmas Carol,” “Spirited” focuses on the Ghost of Christmas Present, portrayed in the original story as a Father Christmas-esque figure. In the (mostly) streaming film, Ferrell plays the spirit, who spends every year selecting a new corrupted person to be visited by him and the ghosts of Christmases Past and Future. However, when he chooses Clint Briggs (Reynolds) as the ghosts’ new project, he winds up getting the script flipped on him by the savvy businessman, who forces the spirit to go through his own past, present, and future.

Remakes, reboots, reimaginings. Hollywood is obsessed with the "re-ification" — yeah, I'm copyrighting that — of the industry, and whenever there's an opportunity to bring a franchise or original property back from the dead and spend a lot of unnecessary money on it, they do it. In that vein, Apple Original Films released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming holiday musical comedy, "Spirited," starring Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer.
In the sneak peek, we are introduced to Ferrell, a period ghost visiting Reynolds, a modern man who is more than surprised to find that the Charles Dickens novel has some truth to it. According to a press release, the film's synopsis reads:
Each Christmas Eve, the Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell) selects one dark soul to be reformed by a visit from three spirits. But this season, he picked the wrong Scrooge. Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) turns the...

Despite its 19th century publication, Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol” pervades as a popular holiday tale adapted dozens of times for cinema. So what makes the next iteration of this story unique from the rest?
The answer is comedians Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, who are co-starring in the musical “Spirited” — the latest adaptation of the canonical piece of literature. Reynolds will be playing Clint Briggs, a younger, funnier version of the old, crotchety Ebenezer Scrooge, while Ferrell will be portraying the ghost of Christmas Present. However, Clint turns the tables and reexamines the ghost’s past, present and future. For the first time, “A Christmas Carol” is told from the perspective of the ghosts in this hilarious musical twist on the classic Dickens tale.
Produced by Maximum Effort and Gloria Sanchez Productions, the upcoming Apple TV+ original feature is a holiday-oriented musical comedy co-written by Sean Anders and John Morris.

Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell’s upcoming holiday film Spirited — a musical retelling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol — will open in theaters on Nov. 11 before making its global debut on Apple TV+ Nov. 18 ahead of Thanksgiving.
Apple Original Films announced its release plans for the high-profile movie on Friday. It’s not yet clear how many cinemas Spirited will play in, since many exhibitors aren’t keen to carry a film that’s hitting the home so quickly now that the box office is recovering from the pandemic.
For its part — much like its rivals — Apple Original Films’ main focus is making compelling content for its streaming service, versus waging a full-fledged theatrical run that requires a major marketing spend.
Streamers generally don’t report theatrical grosses. A traditional Hollywood event pic will open in 3,000 to 4,000 screens, while an event title from...

Poster for Apple Original Films’ ‘Spirited’ starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds
Apple Original Films is taking an unusual approach to building the buzz for Spirited. Instead of the usual movie posters, Apple’s opted to release four behind-the-scenes posters for what they’re describing as a modern musical rendition of Charles Dickens’ classic holiday story A Christmas Carol.
The posters feature the musical’s stars Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer. And Reynolds mentioned the posters’ release on Twitter, tweeting, “For some reason, these are called iPosters.” (It’s Friday and my brain’s in weekend mode so it took me a minute to figure out the joke.)
The cast also includes Patrick Page, Sunita Mani, Loren Woods, Joe Tippett, Marlow Barkley, and Jen Tullock. Sean Anders and John Morris co-wrote the screenplay, with Anders directing. Anders, Morris, Reynolds, Ferrell, George Dewey, Jessica Elbaum, and David Koplan produced.

Birmingham, June 6 (Ians) Exactly 27 years ago to this day, former West Indies captain Brian Lara hammered 501 not out against Durham in a County Championship match for Warwickshire here at Edgbaston. It remains the highest first-class score until today.
Lara's big first-class score in a high-scoring match came off 427 deliveries in 474 minutes. He hit 10 sixes and 62 boundaries during the world record innings.
Lara, who also holds the record for highest individual score in a Test innings as well, had surpassed former Pakistan batsman Hanif Mohammad's score of 499, scored 35 years prior, in 1959.

Why is it that, when a horror film achieves something special, both the critics and the public tend to elevate it above and beyond the ‘lowly’ horror genre? David Lynch’s most humane and sympathetic film still makes our heads spin, and this new 4K remaster renders Freddie Francis’s great cinematography at its best. Lynch extends and develops the visual nightmares of his experimental Eraserhead for this true-life classic. Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller and Freddie Jones all give indelible, emotionally-moving performances. How many horror pictures hold up hope for social decency and personal dignity?

After working for over a decade at Pixar, a studio with 15 Oscars, it is Josh Cooley’s turn to ride the awards season train. His feature film directorial debut, “Toy Story 4,” was nominated Monday for a Golden Globe, capping off a run that saw Cooley take control of Pixar’s most famous characters during an unprecedented period of upheaval for the studio.
“It’s a big deal for me. From the beginning, I had a lot of pressure on myself because I was working with these beloved characters,” Cooley told TheWrap. “It’s exciting to do a ‘Toy Story’ film but also so nerve-wracking because the expectations were so high after the last film. To have the voters and the audience enjoy it so much feels really great.

We have a fun new holiday treat coming up in the form of a new musical reimagining of the classic Christmas tale by Charles Dickins, A Christmas Carol, starring the hilarious actors Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds.
The film is being shopped around studios and will be written and directed by Sean Anders and John Morris, the duo that brought us She’s Out of My League, Daddy’s Home, and Instant Family. We’ve seen lots of iterations of the tale with many actors in movies and TV, cartoons, TV series episodes, and of course, Muppets. It’s a great story that is always fun to hear, and this sounds like it will be a hilarious version that will hopefully become a Christmas classic.
We don’t know who Ferrell and Reynolds will be playing, or who else will be cast quite yet, but we will let you know.
