Typically when it comes to the horror genre, it’s the rickety old, broken down homes or barns that raise the scare level. But for FX’s American Horror Story: Cult, Ryan Murphy craved a chic style and tapped his The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story production designer Jeffrey Mossa for the job.
Mossa’s starting point? A book about the homes of daytime talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres, which Murphy recommended. Taking inspiration from that source material, Mossa sought to create “a sense of chaos within the calm” in the swanky home owned by married couple Ivy Mayfair-Richards and Ally Mayfair-Richards (Allison Pill and Sarah Paulson), a domicile descended on by evil clowns, complete with a frosted glass bathroom doors and an old four-legged tub (reminiscent of Ahs Season 1), a herringbone Art Deco-like bedroom, one zany Parallelogram bookcase, and a high-end French bistro which the couple owns.

For Season 1 of Ryan Murphy’s first responder procedural series 9-1-1, Mark Vanselow took on as much as any stunt coordinator could: an oceanic plane crash, apex predator attacks, bloody motorcycle wrecks and more.
Learning Murphy’s process while working on American Horror Story: Cult, Vanselow went into the producer’s latest series as part of a large team of disaster manufacturers, collaborating closely in bringing each of its visual terrors to the screen.
Joining forces with production designer Jeffrey Mossa, special effects coordinator James Lorimer, fellow stunt coordinator Tim Davison and the artists at FuseFX, Vanselow was able to help bring top-drawer cinematic spectacle to the small screen, judging how each of the series’ myriad stunts should be executed, and what should be realized in post.
“Everybody’s constantly trying to push the envelope as far as what we can do, but everybody, particularly from Ryan’s team,...

Collaborating with Ryan Murphy on series including Scream Queens, American Horror Story and American Crime Story, production designer Jeffrey Mossa found a new level of spectacle and logistical difficulty with the producer’s first responder procedural series 9-1-1, in which each episode presented an array of disasters to produce for the screen.
Finding out about 9-1-1 halfway through American Horror Story: Cult with the belief that he’d be working on American Crime Story: Katrina next, Mossa turned to the procedural series when that anthology installment got delayed, finding endless visual opportunities in designing for a world where the stakes couldn’t be higher.
“That’s what’s challenging about it and keeps it interesting—you’re doing things that are not everyday items. There’s always a challenge, whether it be a major stunt, or prop or prosthetic, or something that has to be worked into the storyline,...
