The Duke of Edinburgh's death this month at the age of 99 brought an end to his remarkably long marriage to Queen Elizabeth II. Nearly 74 years ago, their royal wedding was a national event, a welcome break from the difficult years after World War II. The couple accepted that their big day would be public but hoped what followed - their honeymoon - would be just for them.
Philip and Elizabeth planned multiple weeks away in different parts of Britain and were looking forward to what would essentially be their first extended period alone together. The itinerary included a stay at Broadlands, the Hampshire estate owned by Philip's aunt and uncle Louis and Edwina Mountbatten, followed by a visit to the royal family's Scottish getaway Balmoral, where the newlyweds stayed in a house called Birkhall.
A special and secluded getaway wasn't exactly what was in store for Elizabeth, then a princess,...

After investigating her own heritage during the filming of an episode of BBC’s “Who Do You Think You Are?,” filmmaker Gurinder Chadha was inspired to delve more deeply into her own family’s history, and its thorny relationship with India’s independence.
That personal story helped inspire her latest film, “Viceroy’s House,” which stars Hugh Bonneville as Lord Mountbatten, the final Viceroy of India, and traces his — and his family, including Gillian Anderson as his wife, Lady Edwina Mountbatten — final months in the country, set mostly in 1947 during the Partition of India.

Though a film set 70 years ago, there’s a profound sense of relevance to Gurinder Chadha’s Viceroy’s House, and when we sat down with Gillian Anderson – who plays Edwina Mountbatten – she discussed the pertinency of the project at hand.
“Things haven’t changed,” she said. “But can we learn from our mistakes? And what is our moral responsibility to things like immigrants or refugees? It’s a big contemporary topic”.
Anderson also discusses the flaws of her character, and how in spite of her good intentions she remains a part of the problem – which led to the partition. She discusses how this may change the perception of the Mountbattens in India, and whether or not she spoke to relatives of the married couple, and whether it has helped, and informed her performance. Finally she discusses Official Secrets – a picture she was said to be in...

We present our interviews from the red carpet of the UK Premiere of Viceroy’s House, held yesterday evening at the at Curzon Mayfair in London.
The film stars Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Lily Travers, Manish Dayal and Huma Qureshi, and is directed by Gurinder Chadha. It tells the story of the final Viceroy in India before its independence. Chadha’s take on the division of the Indian Empire is told through the relationship between the titular Viceroy and his wife, and the emergent love between one of their servants and his bride.
The film has a fine cast and looks, from the trailers, to be a visually sumptuous enterprise. Scott Davis and Colin Hart were on the red carpet this evening.
Director Gurinder Chadha spoke eloquently on the timing of the film, and the importance of learning from history.

Viceroy’s House, directed by Gurinder Chadha is releasing nationwide on 3rd March 2017 and stars Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Huma Qureshi and Manish Dayal. The film tells the true story of the final months of British rule in India and its release will coincide with the 70th Anniversary of the Independence of India and the founding of Pakistan.
The film is accompanied by a beautiful and moving score, composed by Oscar and Grammy winning maestro A.R. Rahman. Speaking in a recent interview, Rahman references Viceroy’s House:
“Gurinder’s expectation was to have something very classic, very rooted and at the same time universal. I’ve used the sarangi, a strings and brass orchestra, a lot of flute — mainly classical instruments.”
The official soundtrack for Viceroy’s House coincides its release with the film and will be available to buy on all digital outlets on Friday 3rd March. The album...

Two new character posters have arrived for British drama, Viceroy’s House and we can’t help thinking they have a link to Valentine’s Day. With Gillian Anderson gazing lovingly at her Husband, Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) on one side and the young lover’s, Jeet and Aalia cosying up to each other.
Related: Viceroy’s House Trailer and Poster
Viceroy’s House is set in a time where men were seen to rule their women and these posters depict this in a blatant manner with both Lord Mountbatten and Jeet in regal, honourable stances ever so slightly in front of the ladies. Even though fitting for the time, to portray this on promotional posters in the 21st century makes them feel dated. Oh and while we are here does anyone else, after watching our previous trailer post for Viceroy’s House, think Gillian Anderson has...

Cate Blanchett's period drama Indian Summer has been shelved by studio Universal. Slumdog Millionaire star Irrfan Khan is leading the race to play Cate Blanchett's lover in new period movie Indian Summer.
The Bollywood star is slated to play India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the controversial drama about Lady Edwina Mountbatten's alleged romance.
Blanchett will play Mountbatten, the wife of the last British viceroy of India, in the project.
Producers only got the greenlight to commence shooting in India last week (ends02Oct09) after film officials insisted on scrutinising the script - to make sure it was respectful of Nehru.
Insider Rajan Zed says, "Officials will reportedly oversee the shooting and it has to be okayed before release."
Reports suggest Hugh Grant will play Blanchett's husband, Lord Louis Mountbatten, in the film, scheduled for release in 2011.
Filming will reportedly follow the important events surrounding India’s Independence and will be shot on location in Delhi, Punjab, Jammu-Kashmir, and other parts of the country.

Variety reports that Cate Blanchett is set to star as Lady Edwina Mountbatten in Joe Wright's Indian Summer [1]. The film will follow the critical events during India's Independence from England. Lord Mountbatten [2](with Edwina in tow) is sent to oversee the transfer of power to India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru [3]in the summer of 1947. The script will be penned by William Nickolson (Elisabeth the Golden Age, Gulp!) Universal will distribute as filming begins early next year, with a release date that is likely to coincide with the 2010 awards season. Natalie Portman looks like Hollywood's hardest working star with seven upcoming productions between now and 2011. Later this year she will be in Don Roos' comedy Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, Mira Nair's segment in the star studded anthology New York, I Love You, and Jim Sheridan's Oscar pony Brothers. Back in March it was announced Joe Wright's follow-up to The Soloist would be Indian Summer based on the book of the same name by Alex von Tunzelmann. After taking to Los Angeles for The Soloist, Wright said he "was looking for something that was primarily about the British experience" for his next film and Indian Summer filled the bill focusing on the last days of Britain's colonial rule in India and the symbolic end of Britain's status as a world superpower and now Wright has found his female lead for the feature. Variety reports Cate Blanchett will star as Lady Edwina Mountbatten in a story that follows the fateful events as Britain's Lord Mountbatten, with Edwina in tow, is sent to oversee the handover of power in the summer of 1947 to Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister. William Nicholson (Gladiator and Elizabeth: The Golden Age) is penning the script.

Fresh from a Nottingham spring spent frolicking in the forests of Sherwood, Cate Blanchett has signed up for Indian Summer, Joe Wright's period drama set in the turbulent, bloody final days of the British Empire. Set in 1947, Indian Summer sees Blanchett play Lady Edwina Mountbatten, wife of Lord Mountbatten's Viceroy of India, who helps her husband oversee the handover of power in the country to Jawaharlal Nehru. To say that this didn't go well would be understating things, with the country pitched into an unprecedented period of bloodshed and disorder. Gladiator writer William Nicholson is adapting the story from Alex von Tunzelmann's book.Blanchett rarely makes a misstep when picking her roles and she'll have plenty to get her teeth into as Lady Edwina. With an acute intelligence, hard-partying socialite lifestyle and a string of affairs, Edwina achieved fame and notoriety in her lifetime, but also went...
