David Bowie, the other-worldly musician who broke pop and rock boundaries with his creative musicianship, nonconformity, striking visuals and a genre-spanning persona he christened Ziggy Stardust, died of cancer Sunday. He was 69 and had just released a new album.
Bowie, whose hits included "Space Oddity," ''Fame," ''Heroes" and "Let's Dance," died "peacefully" and was surrounded by family, representative Steve Martin said early Monday. The singer had fought cancer for 18 months.
Long before alter egos and wild outfits became commonplace in pop, Bowie turned the music world upside down with the release of the 1972 album, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" which introduced one of music's most famous personas. Ziggy Stardust was a concept album that imagined a rock star from outer space trying to make his way in the music world. Judging a late-night talk show is a tricky game, but I’m a fan of both Whitney and Whitney, so it isn’t difficult for me to ease into the groove that is Love You Mean It, Whitney Cummings new show on E!. It definitely has a different flavor to it, one that is closer to Chelsea Lately than most other late-night shows, but so far it’s a lot of fun.
A mix of what is basically a stand-up act, some “segments” (like the Insta-Grammar clip below), and chatting with guests, it’s a show that moves along at a pretty good clip, and is actually described pretty well by the overused soundbite “Whitney being Whitney.”

Showtime's political and psychological thriller Homeland asks the question: What's the price of 9/11 to this country?
But according to the executive producer Howard Gordon, the fact that the show is airing just weeks after the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks and months after Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces is somewhat dumb luck.
Check out photos of the Homeland cast
"The timing is significant, accidental and fortuitous," Gordon said at the Television Critics Association fall TV previews. "It is just a confluence of events. It turns out to be quite fortuitous, as are a number of other things that seem to affect the way this show is going to be viewed. Osama bin Laden was killed when were shooting Episode 2, eerily like the scene of [star Damian Lewis'] rescue."

Balmorhea is an instrumental ensemble from Austin, Texas, with a propensity for fluctuating memberships: At the start, the band was just Rob Lowe (not that Rob Lowe, or even that one) and Michael Muller, multi-instrumentalists making paradoxically tiny epics. Sure, their sound was small, but their music's scope was grand, suggesting cinematic landscapes and climaxes. Over the last four years, the band has grown to include a web of strings, drums, percussion, voices and electronics. Their sound has grown, too, peaking with the clangorous 2009 album All is Wild, All is Silent and nicely drawing itself back in with last year's excellent Constellations.
Late last year, Balmorhea released Candor/Clamor, a seven-inch that showcases the range of their ideas. As the title suggests, "Clamor" is a loud, riveting number, with battered piano keys and a sharp bassline. It's one of those big Balmorhea crescendos, bottled and sold on a smaller scale.

Chicago – How does one of the trendiest shows on television stay hot in its seventh season? It’s a question that the writers of “Entourage” must answer as cable’s beloved bad boys return tonight for another season of celebrity cameos and insider drama. The first two episodes are strong, indicating that perhaps a few of the last few season’s wrinkles have been ironed out, but only time will tell.
TV Rating: 3.5/5.0
After years of critics and fans asking for a bit more time for the characters of “Entourage” not named Vinny (Adrian Grenier) or Ari (Jeremy Piven), most of us regretted what we had asked for as last season was easily the worst of the series to date. The writers pulled back from the saga of a celebrity and focused more on Drama (Kevin Dillon), Eric (Kevin Connolly), and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and the result was a snooze.

Chicago – The head-on collision with “The Jay Leno Show” has decimated nearly everything on NBC and it’s going to be a long, uphill climb for it to return to ratings respectability. Even relatively acclaimed new shows like “Parenthood” are struggling as viewers left the peacock net and seem unwilling to return. The already ratings-challenged “Trauma” returns tonight, March 15th, 2010, in an effort to stop the bleeding.
Television Rating: 2.0/5.0
As a part of the anemic Monday nights, “Trauma” has basically already been cancelled once but was shocked back to life after the Leno debacle when the net suddenly found itself with five more hours to fill. Before Leno was cancelled, “Trauma” had finished fourth in its timeslot in every single airing and had plummeted to a series-low of under 5 million viewers for its last airing.

Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas trudged through a blizzard Monday on the fifth day of their hike with other entertainers and activists up 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro. “It’s pretty gnarly,” Elizabeth Gore, an executive with the United Nations Foundation, and one of the participants of the trek to raise awareness of global water issues, tells People by satellite phone. “The visibility is only 10 feet in front of you. And it’s cold. I’ve got six layers on.” With just a day left of climbing before hitting the summit of the Tanzanian mountain, the group reached 16,000 feet, causing...

Mr. T is nowhere to be found in this movie adaptation of the tongue-in-cheek '80's action series from director Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces). But if stars Liam Neeson (Col. John "Hannibal" Smith) and Bradley Cooper (Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck) have their way, this version will still be mui macho. "When my agent said, A-Team, I said, 'oh, please,'" recalls Neeson, who, after the success of Taken and an upcoming role as Zeus in Clash of the Titans, has unexpectedly hit the action hero phase of his career. "Some of these films can be so empty and bland, but this was riveting.

As you've no doubt heard, Lady in the Water star Bryce Dallas Howard will replace Rachelle Lefevre as the vampire Victoria in Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight franchise. (Do we think Lefevre, pictured here at Comic-Con, already knew?) Summit Entertainment cited a scheduling conflict, which Update: Lefevre has now confirmed is a role in the independent movie Barney's Version (starring Dustin Hoffman and Paul Giamatti, according to IMDb). She says she was "stunned" by Summit's decision not to accommodate her 10-day commitment to Barney's during Eclipse's production, which will run more than three months. While this could support one of the alternate theories running on our News Briefs blog -- producers wanted to replace Lefevre with an actress they believe could better embody Victoria's wrath (which I could buy) -- some in the media are expecting fans to be outraged because "They don't want anything to change in their Twilight Zone.

Chicago – Patrick Swayze shines in A&E’s down-and-dirty “The Beast,” a show about deep undercover agents that uses its Chicago setting as well as any show in recent memory. Chicago is regularly the setting for television and film productions, but rarely has it been as much a part of the overall fabric of the show as it is on “The Beast,” one of the more promising dramas of the new year.
A&E’s new drama is about going so deep undercover that not only does identity get blurry but so does motive and even sanity. The pilot script from writer William Rotko (“Breach”) and Vincent Angell occasionally stretches credulity, but Swayze and the excellent quality of the production make for an immensely watchable thriller.
