So You Think You Can Dance premiered on Fox in July 2005. The reality TV dance competition was the brainchild of Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, producers of American Idol. Throughout its 17 seasons, fans of Sytycd have watched hundreds of contestants cut a rug and leave it all out on the dance floor in hopes of being crowned “America’s favorite dancer” at the end of the competition.
The talent of each Sytycd contestant is analyzed by a panel of two to four permanent judges. Guest judges also join the panel throughout the season, with the panel sometimes ballooning up to twice or more than its normal size for callback episodes or season finales. Let’s look at all of the permanent judges on So You Think You Can Dance over the years.

This expensive production was dismissed as a flop, and literary critics scorned it for diluting the famed novel by Theodore Dreiser. But it plays well now: William Wyler gives star Laurence Olivier what may be his best film acting role ever. Jennifer Jones’ title part suffers from script changes that censor and sentimentalize Dreiser’s intentions, but the film remains a shattering tragedy. Eddie Albert co-stars in one of his first dramatic roles; this encoding includes a scene dropped from the original release.

When the 74th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced back in July, legendary comedy duo Steve Martin and Martin Short joined an incredibly short list of costars nominated in the Comedy Actor category for their performances on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Throughout all Emmy history, only four other sets of comedy acting pairs have landed nominations in this category in the same year. But now that they have accomplished this feat, could the internal competition keep either of them from netting the trophy?
The first duo of comedy actors to earn nominations in this category dates back to 1968, when Sebastian Cabot and Brian Keith were recognized for “Family Affair” but lost to Don Adams (“Get Smart”). Tony Randall and Jack Klugman had the longest streak of costar nominations in this category from 1971 to 1975: Klugman bested Randall in ’71 and ’73, but Randall had the last laugh by finally...

Matthew Morrison will no longer be a “So You Think You Can Dance” judge after he failed to follow “competition production protocols,” Variety has confirmed.
The former “Glee” star announced his departure from the Fox dance competition show, which premiered on May 18, in a statement on Friday.
“Having the opportunity to be a judge on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ was an incredible honor for me. Therefore, it is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show. After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly,” Morrison said in the statement. “I cannot apologize enough to all involved and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet.”

Against all odds, “So You Think You Can Dance” returns to Fox on Wednesday night for its long-delayed Season 17 after a very long Covid break.
Ahead of the premiere, TheWrap talked to host Cat Deeley about how she thought the show was never coming back and how the enthusiasm of the contestants and the new judge lineup of YouTube star JoJo Siwa, dancer and “Sytycd” All-Star Stephen “tWitch” Boss, and “Glee” alum Matthew Morrison bring a “fresh energy” to the show.
It’s a change of pace from perennial judge Nigel Lythgoe, who remains on as executive producer, and Mary Murphy, whose “Hot Tamale Train” raves became a trademark of the show until her 2015 exit.
TheWrap: You must be so excited to be back.

Host Cat Deeley is the only previously announced “So You Think You Can Dance” star set to return for Season 17, as Fox revealed a new cast of judges on Monday: Stephen “Twitch” Boss, “Glee” star Matthew Morrison and dancer/singer JoJo Siwa. The show’s new installment will premiere Wednesday, May 18 at 9 p.m. Et, following the season finale of “The Masked Singer.”
Boss, Morrison and Siwa replace judging panelists Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Laurieann Gibson, who were originally slated to return for the show’s 17th season in 2020. But then came the Covid-19 pandemic — and the show’s producers had to scrap that season over health concerns. Production was officially halted, and in June 2020, Fox confirmed that the show would be put on hold.

Three years after its last season aired, Fox has officially announced “So You Think You Can Dance” will return for Season 17 this summer. The reality TV dance competition was put on pause during the Covid-19 pandemic and many fans were left wondering if the show would ever return. There has been no official announcement if host Cat Deely or judges Mary Murphy and Laurieann Gibson will come back, but one thing is certain: Co-creator and original judge Nigel Lythgoe is out.
“I am so thrilled that America’s young aspiring dance talent will get to work with some of our greatest creative choreographers,” Lythgoe wrote in a statement. “On a personally sad note, I have not been asked to be on the judging panel this season. So You Think You Can Dance is staging a comeback ... but one of its most familiar faces will not be back.
Nigel Lythgoe took to Twitter Friday to reveal he has not been asked back.

“On a personally sad note, I have not been asked to be on the judging panel this season. I don’t know who will be saying ‘Cue Music’ but I wish them well.”
The development comes as a big shocker when you consider that Lythgoe has served as a judge on every single season to date.
Fox has yet to comment on the decision, but it will undoubtedly divide the fans who have watched the show for so long.

Cue the exit music. On Friday, March 4, So You Think You Can Dance longtime judge Nigel Lythgoe stunned fans by announcing that he would not be a part of the upcoming 17th season. This is certainly surprising as Lythgoe, who created the series alongside Simon Fuller, has claimed a spot at the table alongside the likes of Mary Murphy and other judges for the past 16 iterations. So, why is he Mia this time around? According to a tweet by Lythgoe, he wasn't invited back to the panel for the new season. So You Think You Can Dance co-creator and judge Nigel Lythgoe won’t be part of Season 17. He reportedly was not asked to be part of the judge’s panel for the new season. Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Laurieann Gibson were set to return as judges when Sytycd Season 17 was announced back in February 2020. After a two-year hiatus, the show’s comeback was confirmed on March 2. Does absence make the heart grow fonder?
Fox is asking that question with the return of So You Think You Can Dance, which found its 17th season canceled due to the pandemic.
The network confirmed Wednesday that the series will return to its schedule in the summer.

“So You Think You Can Dance,” the multi-Emmy-winning dance competition, is finally returning this summer for its long-delayed 17th season, with auditions set for New York City, Los Angeles and New Orleans, Fox announced on Wednesday.
The 16th season premiered on June 3, 2019, and crowned its winner on September 16, 2019. The 17th season was originally set to air in summer 2020, but was indefinitely delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In February 2021, Fox announced the promised season was not happening after all, leaving the show’s future up in the air. But a year later, with the pandemic reaching more manageable numbers, Fox gave the long-delayed season the go-ahead.
This year, the competition is open to “highly skilled dancers between the ages of 18 and 30,” and those who make it to the live show will face “brand-new twists and turns” in the competition.

Break out your dancing shoes. The So You Think You Can Dance TV show is finally going to return for its 17th season on Fox. The series last aired in the summer of 2019.
A dance competition reality TV series hosted by Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can Dance pits dancers against one another, in a bid to become “America’s Favorite Dancer.” In season 16, judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy were joined by Laurieann Gibson (Lady Gaga’s choreographer) and Sytycd veteran Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval. Together, the judges assess the dancers’ ability in various dance styles, including contemporary, tap, hip-hop, ballroom, animation, breaking, and more. The chosen dancers then work with choreographers and compete. Each week, contestants are eliminated until a winner is selected in the season finale.

Nearly two years after So You Think You Can Dance was renewed for a 17th season, it may (finally) air on Fox. After a delay due to Covid-related concerns, the dance competition may return in the summer of 2022, TVLine reports. A casting call has also been posted, inviting those who think they can be America’s Favorite Dancer to submit an audition. Fox originally announced the Season 17 pickup in February 2020, at which point Cat Deeley was set to return as host and Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Laurieann Gibson as judges. We’ll have to wait to see what may happen now that it may be happening two years later than planned. In June 2020, Fox announced that they would no longer be moving forward with production on Sytycd Season 17 “due to health and governmental restrictions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic,” the network said in a statement. “As a result,...

Who knew that in this dark hour of the climate crisis hope would arrive in the form of a 563-page novel by a sci-fi writer best known for a trilogy about establishing a human civilization on Mars? But alas, that’s what Kim Stanley Robinson – the author of 20 books and one of the most respected science fiction writers working today — has given us with The Ministry for the Future. “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant-turned-choreographer Travis Wall earned his 10th Emmy nomination this year for the Fox competition series. That puts him within striking distance of not one but two Emmy records. His nominated “Sign of the Times” routine tackled America’s gun violence epidemic in emotional fashion. Watch it above.
See‘So You Think You Can Dance’ judge Mary Murphy’s sad reaction to a cancelled season: ‘We were given the green light. We were all excited’
Before this year’s contenders were announced, Wall had been tied with Derek Hough as the second most nominated choreographer in Emmy history at nine apiece. Now Wall stands alone in second place in the record books. Only one other person has been nominated in this category more times: the legendary Debbie Allen with 11 bids. So Wall just needs one more to share her all-time record.
But that’s not all.

Jim Parsons won four Emmys for “The Big Bang Theory,” and now he gives a showy, against-type performance as an exploitative talent agent in “Hollywood,” so it’s no surprise that he’s the Emmy front-runner for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. But not everyone agrees on that point. Our Top 24 Users, who got the highest scores predicting last year’s nominations, are betting on one of the “Watchmen”: Tim Blake Nelson.
Out of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed, 13 of them are betting on Parsons to win: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (Wdaf-tv Fox), Lynn Elber (Associated Press), Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood), Libby Hill (IndieWire), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Hanh Nguyen (Salon), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Jazz Tangcay (TV Guide Magazine), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

With Emmy nominations just days away, Gold Derby’s 31 Experts are furiously updating their predictions. Their latest odds for Best Comedy Supporting Actress are in and the news is somewhat mixed for Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”). Sure, she’s still predicted to receive her first career Emmy nomination, but she can’t seem to eke past the two front-runners to win: Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”). The 2020 Emmys are shaping up to be the Battle of the Co-stars for HBO’s “Succession.” For months now, awards watchers have been pulling their hair out over predicting who might win between lead actors Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong. But now some of our Emmy Experts are divided over a pair of supporting players: Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen. Of our 30 pundits from major media outlets, seven predict Culkin will triumph for playing immature son Roman Roy, while one goes out on a limb for Macfadyen as Tom Wambsgans, a Waystar executive who’s married to Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook).

Earlier this year “The Good Place” signed off the air to great fanfare, but how many Emmy voters watching? All season long, Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) has been the odds-on front-runner to win Best Comedy Supporting Actor at the 2020 Emmys, and that still hasn’t changed now that nominations voting is over. In fact, a leading 19 of our 31 Emmy Experts predict a second consecutive victory for the “Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer, compared to 10 who think “Schitt’s Creek” creator/writer/actor Dan Levy will prevail. The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress race is shaping up to be a nail-biter: Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”) and Regina King (“Watchmen”) are neck and neck in our odds — and each has 13 Experts backing them.

Last year the TV academy forced FX’s “American Horror Story” to submit in the drama categories for the first time, since the “Apocalypse” season contained continuing storylines and characters from both “Murder House” and “Coven.” Because of the switcheroo, “Ahs” scream queen Jessica Lange was able to nab an Emmy nomination in Best Drama Guest Actress — a category she wouldn’t have been eligible for had the show stayed as a limited series. Not many people correctly predicted Luke Kirby‘s come-from-behind Emmy victory last year for Best Comedy Guest Actor. In fact, this “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer was in fourth place on our 2019 odds chart, behind Peter MacNicol (“Veep”), John Mulaney (“Saturday Night Live”) and Adam Sandler (“Saturday Night Live”). This year our Emmy Experts don’t plan on making the same mistake again — he’s in the runner-up position to win his second Emmy Award for the Amazon comedy. For the most part, Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict that the Best Comedy Actress trophy will go to either Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”) or Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). However, one gutsy Emmy prognosticator out of 29 (Lynette Rice of Ent. Weekly) instead goes out on a limb for Merritt Wever (“Run”). And why not? This beloved actress has already taken home two Emmy Awards — both rather unexpectedly — for her work on “Nurse Jackie” (Comedy Supporting Actress in 2013) and “Godless” (Limited/Movie Supporting Actress in 2018).
Wever was so gobsmacked by her first win that she infamously gave one of the shortest Emmy speeches of all time: “Thank you so much. Um … I gotta go, bye.” So it’d be foolish to underestimate the actress yet again at the 2020 ceremony. Watch the Emmys flashback video below.

Talk about a nail-biter! Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets are almost evenly divided between “Bad Education” and “El Camino” when it comes to Best TV Movie. All 29 Emmyologists believe both programs will earn nominations on July 28, so that’s no help. But when it comes to the winner, 13 pick the HBO telefilm about a true-to-life high school scandal while 12 choose the Netflix spin-off about a fan-favorite “Breaking Bad” character. The other four Experts predict “American Son,” Netflix’s adaptation of the Broadway play.

“Bad Education” just debuted on April 25, so it’s still fresh in the minds of Emmy voters. Hugh Jackman plays a by-the-books Long Island superintendent who gets embroiled in an embezzlement scandal thanks to his assistant’s (Allison Janney) illegal spending habits. HBO is no stranger to winning Best TV Movie, including...

“Watchmen,” HBO’s uniquely timely program about mask-wearing and racial injustice, is our Experts’ pick to take home the trophy for Best Limited Series at the 2020 Emmys. The one-and-done series starring Regina King as a vigilante superhero is a loose adaptation of the 1980s comic book of the same name, which only lasted a single volume. But, not so fast. Even though a vast majority of our Emmyologists from major media outlets predict “Watchmen” to win (18 out of 29), there’s a slight problem in that two Experts don’t think it’ll be nominated at all. In fact, only one limited series has the support of every single Expert in terms of getting a nomination: FX’s “Mrs. America.” That helps boosts the political drama’s racetrack odds to 39/10, which is just a smidge below the leading 19/5 odds for HBO’s comic book series.

Ballroom specialist Mary Murphy was as shocked as any fan that Fox suddenly decided to call off the 17th season of its popular reality talent competition, “So You Think You Can Dance,” due to the ongoing pandemic. Recent singing competitions such as “American Idol” and “The Voice” were able to find a way to keep their competitors safe by filming them remotely.
But dancing involves close contact with others and “Sytycd” relies on pairings between partners who specialize in different styles such as tap, ballroom, jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop while doing just-learned routines in front of a live audience. There are also group numbers that require the opposite of social distancing.

Even though Jonathan Banks is a six-time Emmy nominee in Best Drama Supporting Actor, he still has yet to take home a trophy — a dubious record he shares with Ed Begley Jr. Banks’ bids are spread out over three shows — “Wiseguy” (1989), “Breaking Bad” (2013) and “Better Call Saul” — while Begley’s were all for “St. Elsewhere” (1983-88). According to Gold Derby’s Experts from major media outlets, Banks should finally dust off his Emmy speech this year as he’s the odds-on front-runner to win on what would be his seventh nomination.
