Tonight, in her first go-round at the Oscars, Hannah Beachler took home the statuette for Best Production Design, for her contributions to Ryan Coogler’s Marvel phenomenon, Black Panther.
Visibly stunned as she appeared on stage, and later in the press room, Beachler thanked her fellow nominees for the “extraordinary worlds” they built this year before very personally saluting her director. “I stand here stronger than I was yesterday because of Ryan Coogler. You not only make me a better designer, a better storyteller, a better person; I stand here because of the person who gave me a different perspective on life,” the designer said.
Backstage, Beachler was still in shock. “Honestly, I’m just like, ‘This is so yellow!” she said, gazing at her statuette. “So you’ll have to excuse me because I am literally losing my mind.”

Disney hit “Mary Poppins Returns” not only successfully revisited the iconic look of the 1964 classic, it also brought back old-fashioned pencil-on-paper 2D animation to a Disney feature production.
For a 17-minute sequence in the movie, Emily Blunt’s Mary Poppins, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Jack and the children Annabel and John enter a 2D animated world of a painting to meet dancing penguins, puffed-up hummingbirds, and stage the show-stopping song-and-dance number “A Cover Is Not the Book.”
Former Pixar story artist Jim Capobianco supervised the animation sequence for director Rob Marshall and entrusted the work to Pasadena-based Duncan Studio, one of a very few animation houses producing paper-drawn 2D animation in the CG age.
“It was amazing having a full team of people and literally hearing the paper flip,” says animation veteran Ken Duncan, Duncan Studio’s president and chief creative officer. “There’s something soothing about it. It’s pretty cool.

The 23rd annual Art Directors Guild Awards took place on Saturday (Feb. 2). These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the winner of the Best Production Design race at the Academy Awards. Over the first 22 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar champ has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various genre categories. Fifteen of the Academy Award winners first prevailed with the guild, including the last five in a row.
The current Oscar frontrunner for this award, “The Favourite,” won at the Adg in the period category over, among others, two of its Oscar rivals: “First Man” and “Roma.” That race was rounded out by “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” One of the other two Academy Awards contenders — “Black Panther” — won the Adg fantasy film prize. The fifth Oscar nominee, “Mary Poppins Returns,” contended in that race. The contemporary award went to “Crazy Rich Asians.

Screenwriter Tony McNamara and production designer Fiona Crombie have scored their first Academy Award nominations for director Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite.
McNamara and co-writer Deborah Davis are in contention for best original screenplay while Crombie is nominated for best production design, shared with her colleague Alice Felton for set decoration.
Fox Searchlight’s The Favorite and Netflix’s Roma lead the field with 10 nominations apiece, followed by Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born and Annapurna Pictures’ Vice with eight.
Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther scored seven, although not for director Ryan Coogler, and Focus Features’ BlacKkKlansman got six.
The contenders for best picture are Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice.
Advocates for gender equality will be incensed about the total absence of nominations for female directors, cinematographers, film editors, composers and visual effects artists.

Marvel’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Black Panther” dominated the Oscar craft races on Tuesday, grabbing six nominations for costume design, production design, score (composer Ludwig Göransson), song (“All the Stars”), sound editing, and sound mixing.
But it was snubbed for visual effects after being talked up as a frontrunner, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison missed out on her second nomination after breaking the glass ceiling for last year’s “Mudbound.” While the VFX branch may have deemed the effects as too supportive, Morrison perhaps fell prey to the confusion surrounding where cinematography ends and VFX begins.

The awards shows will continue until morale improves. Next up in the season that never truly ends are the Critics’ Choice Awards, which air on The CW tonight at 7:00 p.m. Est. Taye Diggs is hosting the ceremony, which takes place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and is presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. “The Favourite” leads all films with 14 nominations, followed by fellow Best Picture nominee “Black Panther.” So how to watch the ceremony if you don’t have cable?
It may be a little tricky. You can use an over-the-air antenna on the off chance that you have one (and The CW’s website has information on how to find your local channel), or you can use YouTube TV, Hulu With Live TV, or DirecTV Now. If none of those work for you, worry not: IndieWire will be...

We’ve now heard from six of the guilds — actors, art directors, cinematographers, film editors, producers and writers — as well as the casting directors with their nominees for the best of the year in their respective fields.
Only one film — “A Star is Born” — has reaped bids from all seven precursor prizes. Not surprisingly, it is our frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
Six films – “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice” — have been cited by five precursors. All of these but “Crazy Rich Asians” number among our top 10 Best Picture contenders. But could we be underestimating this comedy blockbuster, which is currently in 14th place on our chart?
The current roster is rounded out by “Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which are both in contention at four guilds as well as three-time contender “Mary Poppins Returns” and two-time nominee “If Beale Street Could Talk.

The production designer of Mary Poppins Returns—Disney’s follow-up to a 1964 musical classic—John Myhre knew about the project for at least 10 years, sitting for a long time with the responsibility and opportunity in taking this film on. Discussing it with Marshall on the set of 2009 musical Nine, following collaborations on Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha, Myhre knew he would have to strike a balance between reality and fantasy, between faithful homage to one of the most beloved films of all time, and the breaking of new ground. Set 20 years after Robert Stevenson’s original, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, Mary Poppins Returns picks back up with the Banks children of Cherry Tree Lane, who are now grown up. As Michael (Ben Whishaw) grapples with the loss of his wife and the troubles of the Great Slump, Mary Poppins returns just in time, introducing a new...

The mandate for “Mary Poppins Returns” came straight from Oscar-winning production designer John Myhre: It had to look “London-y,” but also “dipped in reality.” That’s because, unlike Walt Disney’s idyllic world of 1910 in the original movie, the London here took place in 1934, the era of the Depression, or “The Slump,” as the British called it.
“When I first heard the opening song, ‘Underneath the Lovely London Sky,’ I saw this as a love letter to London,” said Myhre, but with a gritty twist in accordance with director Rob Marshall’s vision of becoming much more colorful with the return of the beloved nanny (Emily Blunt).
We glimpse London coming awake out of the fog, gliding by Parliament, Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, through some parks, before making our way to the familiar Cherry Tree Lane. “And we embraced London in the winter with the gray sky,...

As 2018 draws to a close and various critics groups and deliberating bodies measure the year in movie superlatives, a look below the line at the Academy’s crafts races reveals an art form invigorated by many of today’s most brilliant cinematic minds.
Perhaps the most fully realized visual effort is director Barry Jenkins’ follow-up to the Oscars-crashing “Moonlight”: an adaptation of James Baldwin’s “If Beale Street Could Talk.” For the task of translating 1970s Harlem to the screen, Jenkins tapped underappreciated production designer Mark Friedberg, who despite genius efforts on films like “Far From Heaven” and “Synecdoche, New York,” has never been nominated for an Oscar. “Moonlight” composer Nicholas Britell returned with intricate themes to bear, along with costume designer Caroline Eselin, who embraced a far juicier opportunity this time around. Cap it off with lush photography, once again courtesy of Dp James Laxton, and this is quite an attractive package.

Creating the Disney sequel Mary Poppins Returns represented a fresh challenge for director Rob Marshall, no stranger to movie musicals (Chicago, Into the Woods). "The bar was incredibly high, as the world of the original was so beautiful," he says. "I wanted to pay homage while finding our own path.
What helped was setting this in the original era of the mid-’30s" — when the P. L. Travers books took place, not the Edwardian-era 1910s of the Julie Andrews film.

Period and fantasy world-building often lead the production design Oscar contenders and this year is no exception. Hannah Beachler wowed both Marvel and director Ryan Coogler with her deeply researched and inventive designs for the hidden African kingdom Wakanda in “Black Panther,” from elaborate tribal rituals to a James Bond high-tech laboratory.

Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” had its first public screening for SAG members Saturday night at Fox, and Emily Blunt portrays the iconic nanny with such confidence and charm that she could land a Best Actress Oscar nomination. No easy feat since Julie Andrews won the Oscar with the role in 1965 and charmed the world with a performance that was “practically perfect in every way.”
The Rob Marshall-directed musical should also be very competitive in several craft races, including John Myhre’s production design, Sandy Powell’s costume design, Marc Shaiman’s score, Best Song, VFX, and sound editing and mixing.

Frankly speaking, it's still a little odd to be writing about a sequel to Mary Poppins. It's not something I thought would ever happen, but lo and behold...Mary Poppins Returns already started filming. Today Disney brings the announcement for the start of production, giving us some more insight into the sequel's story as well as the impressive cast they've assembled.
“Mary Poppins Returns” is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in Pl Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up,...

Heavy breathing, hammering heart and outrageous enthusiasm in the form of tiny little squeals were just some of the things I experienced right after receiving a text from my editor last summer asking me If I was available and wanted to attend a set visit for Xmen. Umm, let’s not kid ourselves. Considering the film has an amazing all-star A-list cast and the prequel, First Class is pretty kick-ass, naturally it was a no-brainer. However, when I discovered Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy would be filming on set that day. I jumped on the chance like a cheetah on its prey.
Soon after that, this over-heated and grateful gal, flew out to Montreal on a very hot August day, to join a select group of equally curious and enthusiastic reporters. The morning after our arrival, we met our sweet Fox rep, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, to be driven...

Nb: This article contains very mild spoilers for X-Men: Days Of Future Past.
Opposite and a little way to my left, Richard Nixon sits happily eating his lunch. Well, not the real Richard Nixon, obviously, but Mark Camacho, an actor so cunningly made up to look like the infamous Us President circa 1973 - complete with architectural nose and hairline - that it’s impossible not to stare. We’re sitting in the canteen tent of X-Men: Days Of Future Past, where tables have been arranged in long rows, one after the other, so the place looks like Da Vinci’s The Last Supper multiplied in a hall of mirrors.

"I started coming up with ideas that were a little wacky and a little out there and Bryan said, 'John...It has to be the Sentinels,'" John Myhre revealed in a recent interview with Empire Magazine when asked to share his thoughts on the process behind creating the 1970s era Sentinels. "We went back through history to when Bolivar Trask introduced them in 1965. They started with the Mark I and went through so many variants, but what we found is they all had some similarities." There are of course some notable differences between the comic book and movie versions of the iconic X-Men villains, but it was important to Myhre and Singer that one particular element remain. "The main thing was, they were all humanoid. They all had a head, arms and legs, and that was something that was very important for Bryan to keep. And they were also purple.

Thanks to one of 25 magazine covers from Empire, we got our first look at what the future Sentinels will look like in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past. We now have a few more details on the future Sentinel and what the makers were going for when it was designed. The following information comes from production designer John Myhre:
They're biomechanical weapons. We had to come up with what would be the ultimate version that could actually, in principle, stop the X-Men. We started with this idea that they were almost made up of magnetic plates slapped over one another, imagining that the plates could contract or grow, so the Sentinel can be skinny to get through a small space or the plates can open up to become a bigger shape. So they have become virtually unstoppable.

Welcome to Marvelous Da7e, issue #31!
Ant Men!
Ant-Man has moved into the July 31st 2015 spot vacated by Man of Steel 2, bringing it right at the edge of a 2015 Summer of Marvel Phase transition. We know Edgar Wright has some sort of comedic heist-like movie with Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, adding to the Cinematic Universe’s Heroic (Modern) and … Silver Age?
Captain America knew Howard Stark before he solved his unborn-child’s future arc reactor poisoning problem by building a World’s Fair in the design of an atom, and the announced Agent Carter TV series (and the One Shot it’s spinning off from) take place in Post-wwii America when S.H.I.E.L.D. is formed. Hank Pym, if he’s Douglas’ age, would have been born around the time Agent Carter takes place which strangely would make him active around Hank Pym’s 1962 debut in the real world.
