When Bend It Like Beckham came out in 2002, women’s football wasn’t a professional sport in the UK or Australia. But with Jesminder “Jess” Bhamra, the film’s inspiring central character, came hope for all women and girls dreaming of being the next big thing. More than 20 years on fans still celebrate what the film did for aspiring female footballers and British-Asian women. And, in the lead-up to this year’s Women’s World Cup, it acts as a gentle reminder that opportunities in women’s sport haven’t been, and still aren’t, always on par with those of men.

The creator of Maternal has addressed its untimely cancellation by ITV.
It was revealed earlier this month that the channel would not commission a second run of Maternal.
Maternal, starring Parminder Nagra, Lara Pulver and Lisa McGrillis, followed three doctors who return to work in a post-Covid landscape after their maternity leave ends.
The drama began in January 2023, but sadly, for fans of the show, not enough viewers tuned in to warrant a second run.
On Tuesday (11 April), creator Jacqui Honess-Martin posted a broken-heart emoji on Twitter, writing: “We had a lot more to say.”
Explaining the reasoning behind ITV’s decision, the writer continued: “The show needed a high number of viewers for @ITV to sell advertising to break even. Maternal didn’t get that number.
“It hurts that it ends here but I am incredibly proud of the show, grateful and a bit amazed that we got to do it at all.

"Bend It Like Beckham" may be a classic sports film, but Keira Knightley says that people initially warned her about doing it. During the "Boston Strangler" star's appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on March 15, host Jimmy Fallon mentioned that the 20th anniversary of the US release of the movie was this year. He asked Knightley if she always expected the movie, directed by Gurinder Chadha, to become iconic and beloved, to which she replied, "No. No, no, I mean, I literally remember telling people that I was doing it, and saying, you know, it's called 'Bend It Like Beckham,'' and them going, 'Oh, that's really embarrassing.'"
"Yeah, yeah, no, they were all like, 'Don't worry. Nobody will see it, it's fine,'" she continued. "But it was the idea of it, because you know women's soccer was not as big back then," Knightley added.

Maternal, ITV’s new drama about motherhood and practising medicine, opens with an alarming scene of choreographed chaos. Three female doctors, overwhelmed and hideously underslept, attempt to feed their rascal children breakfast, dress them for day care, and separate them from their overspilling toy boxes in time for drop-off. For each, it’s the first day back from maternity leave, though this hectic fire drill, or a version of it, will recreate itself every morning, just as it does in homes dotted throughout the UK and beyond (my own included). Maryam (played by Parminder Nagra) is a paediatric registrar returning to work after almost two years of continuous maternity leave. She dares to ask aloud the question that can doom a working mum – or any stripe of new mum, for that matter – to crushing guilt. “What if I hate being away from them?” she shouts to her husband across the...

The pandemic may be starting to recede but the specter of war and a tortured economy have occupied our minds instead: so, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017 (and last updated in August 2021), a rethink.
We’ve added 25 new films to the Top 50 list we unveiled in August. At that time, we dropped a number of titles from the original list that are funny, but not necessarily comedies. And we’ve added some...

When The Blacklist returns for Season 10, there will be plenty of significant changes.
Thankfully, the series will have a throwback to The Blacklist Season 1 in the form of the death of Meera Malik (Parminder Nagra).
According to TV Line, The Blacklist Season 10 will introduce Meera's daughter, Siya Malik.
Siya is an MI6 intelligence officer who's on a mission to find answers about her mom's death.
Naturally, there will be many questions about the storyline, which should come to fruition as the season plays out.
There's no telling whether this could bring Nagra back into the fold in flashbacks.
Undoubtedly, there will be a lot of excitement for the fans who have been with the show since the beginning.

If the recent exits from NBC’s The Blacklist have made you a bit nostalgic for seasons past, this news about the upcoming 10th season should make you happy (and perhaps hold you over until its midseason premiere). When the NBC drama returns, a new character is coming in: MI6 intelligence officer Siya Malik, daughter of CIA agent Meera Malik (Parminder Nagra), according to TVLine. Meera was part of Red’s (James Spader) special task force in the first season, with her murder, at the hands of an assassin, coming in the finale. There aren’t too many details on what brings her daughter into the mix on The Blacklist, though according to the report, she “will arrive to the task force in pursuit of answers about her mother’s work and death.” There is no casting news yet for Siya. This new character with ties to the past comes...

To mark the release of Di Ray on 11th July, we’ve been given 1 copy to give away on DVD.
After a heroic arrest brings her to the attention of the decision makers on the force, Di Rachita Ray (Parminder Nagra) a British Asian policewoman is promoted to homicide… But her initial excitement on the promotion is quickly quashed by the underlying feeling that she landed the role as a box-ticking exercise, rather than on her merit as a detective.
Assigned to investigate a suspected honour killing of a young Muslim man, she quickly realises the two suspects – brothers from a British Hindu family – aren’t guilty. The evidence against them is flimsy at best, but her attempts to convey this to her superiors and colleagues falls on deaf ears.

My parents were born and raised in Kolkata, India, and experienced the golden age of Bengali cinema. They could see themselves in characters onscreen solving mysteries like Soumitra Chatterjee in “Feluda,” courting like legendary stars Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen, and living everyday village life as seen through the poignant lens of Satyajit Ray.
As a first generation Bengali-American girl, I grew up with two different cultures in a suburban, Irish-Catholic neighborhood. I went to Catholic school for six years, but I also went to Hindu temple camp and spent most of my summer vacations in Kolkata. I speak fluent Bengali and slayed my AP English exam. I danced Bharatnatyam for over 10 years while taking ballet and hip-hop.

ER alum Parminder Nagra is set to star in a new British crime drama series, Di Ray, from Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio and one of its stars Maya Sondhi. British broadcaster ITV has picked up the four-part series, which revolves around Birmingham-based police officer Rachita Ray, who takes on a case that forces her to face a lifelong personal conflict between her British identity and her South Asian heritage. The story will follow a murder investigation while at the same time exploring issues of racism in the workplace. Nagra, perhaps best known for her role as Dr. Neela Rasgotra in the NBC medical drama series ER, will play Ray, who is promoted to the murder unit to investigate what is described as a “culturally specific homicide.” Ray is disappointed, believing she was chosen for her ethnicity rather than her skillset. However, she is determined to find the killer and confront her colleagues’ biases.

Doctor Who season 12 tore up the show’s 50-year mythology by revealing that the Doctor actually had countless lives prior to the first incarnation played by William Hartnell in 1963. The only one we’ve met properly so far is Jo Martin’s version, the first ever Poc Doctor, just like Jodie Whittaker was the series’ first female Doctor. And, according to a new rumor, showrunner Chris Chibnall is hoping to pull off another major Time Lord first in season 13.
YouTuber The Tardis Zone has claimed that the EP is set to “cast an actress to play [an] Lgbtqi+ Doctor.” It’s unknown how this character will fit into the proceedings, but the plan is for them to be of Indian descent and for their costume to “be Indian inspired.” Like Jo Martin before them, this Doctor will be another one of the lost Timeless Child incarnations of the time traveling hero.

1 | Helstrom viewers: Did you ever find yourself distracted by how much Sydney Lemmon, in her Ana get-up, bears a resemblance to Outlander‘s Caitriona Balfe? And in the season finale (Spoiler Alert!), when a possessed Daimon stripped the morgue attendant of his scrubs in order to escape St. Teresa’s, how was he wearing a shirt, pants and coat the next time we saw him?...

Remember those psuedo-inspirational ads that so many businesses put out at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic? And how suddenly, every company you’d ever patronized wanted you to know that they were with you, and we’d all get through this together?
At the start of black-ish‘s Season 7 premiere, Dre considers himself an essential worker because he’s trying to create a commercial like that: one that gives people hope (while also maybe selling them mayonnaise). His self-declared essential status doesn’t go over well with the actual essential worker in the house: Dr. Rainbow Johnson.
