The freedom of love and dance is exactly what Icona Pop and Ultra Naté channel on their “You’re Free” collab, a reimagining of Naté’s “Free” to celebrate the “classic” song’s 25th anniversary. The refreshed version is sure to be a club staple.
Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt used to play the Naté track in clubs even before they formed their duo. “It is the ultimate expression of what we want Icona Pop to represent; freedom to be whoever you want to be, live life to the fullest,...

Since 1997, Rahsaan Patterson has specialized in handsome songs, loving and lovelorn, packed with vocal pirouettes, supple pleading, and lush harmonies. The singer draws from R&b’s venerable Quiet Storm tradition, making music that would fit comfortably next to oldies by Anita Baker and Stevie Wonder. But when Patterson entered the music industry in the Nineties, R&b was growing less interested in “Quiet” and more interested in “Storm” — a certain amount of musical thunder was necessary to compete with hip-hop.
Still, Patterson found a niche, sprinkling more than a...

The nonprofit Red Hot organization is celebrating Pride Month by releasing the first single from its forthcoming double album of dance music, a Billy Porter cover of the Juliet Roberts club classic “Caught in the Middle.”
The full double album is out July 2, pairing Porter and other artists with the production of Bill Coleman and John “J-c” Carr’s 808 Beach.
Since 1990, Red Hot has used music, pop culture and the release of 20 charitable, collaborative compilation albums to reduce stigmas, raise more than $15 million for hundreds of humanitarian groups, and support those whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS.
“I live at the intersection of art and activism,” said Porter. “30 years ago, no one even wanted to talk about HIV and AIDS, let alone celebrate the community with music and dance. There has to be joy in the middle of the pain, and i hope that things can and will get better.

Ty Dolla $ign borrows from classic house music on his new single “Ego Death,” which was created with help from Kanye West, Fka Twigs, Skrillex, and serpentwithfeet.
“Ego Death” references Ralphi Rosario’s club single “You Used to Hold Me,” which included a brassy vocal turn from singer Xaviera Gold, and nods to Ultra Naté’s “Free,” a Nineties juggernaut that still lights up dance floors today. Ty Dolla $ign sings blunt, bruised lines — “It hurt my ego when you walked away/Gave me your all, that wouldn’t make me stay” — over a terse,...

With how rapidly David Guetta was becoming the butt of every joke in the world of Edm, he had to do something to re-establish his credibility. This past weekend, he did just that, by delivering an “Influences” Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 that’s chock full of the ’80s house and techno that inspired him to become a DJ in the first place.
We’ve briefly mentioned Guetta’s illustrious musical history recently, and it looks like the proper house bug has bit him again as the mix features some amazing classics. DJ Sneak and Laurent Garnier grace the many seminal names on the track list, all of whom contribute to the retro wonkiness of the mix as a whole. If Guetta feels it necessary to go to these kinds of measures to appeal to an increasingly discerning world of music fans, we’re not complaining.

Let's jump back in time to a little over 16 years ago. It's the summer of 1998 and if you hit a gay bar or club in the continental United States, you could not miss Stars on 54's dance remake of Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind." It was simply everywhere. The track was the promotional single for "54," a movie that promised a sexy look at the infamous New York City nightclub Studio 54 but couldn't ultimately live up to the marketing hype surrounding its release. The Miramax production was generating a ton of publicity because of its subject matter (one of the most legendary clubs of all-time), young up-and-coming stars such as Ryan Phillippe and Salma Hayek, the participation of Neve Campbell, who was coming off four straight hits (the first two "Screams," "The Craft" and "Wild Things"). Most buzzworthy of all, it was the first dramatic role for...

This just in from The X Factor: Sponsored by Verizon Wireless: Stevie Wonder is calling Chris Rene! Hollywood is calling Rachel Crow! And wait, Steve Jones’ internal motherboard is transmitting some vaguely worded text message about an “error in communication” regarding this week’s Pepsi viewers’ choice performances. (Next week, by the bye, Steve will be replaced by an AOL Instant Messenger box and a series of cutting-edge emoticons.)
What’s that? You’re not buying Steve’s explanation for the last-minute theme switch? You think Simon Cowell simply wanted to whip up some dramatic backstage footage and test...

'Tis the season for jaunty holiday soirees, which naturally got me inspired to create some new iPod playlists. One that I'm particularly happy with is called "Cocktail Hour," a hodge-podge of dance-club classics, electronic oddities, and underrated diva tracks that's festively upbeat, yet not so propulsive that inebriated guests will be threatening to push my kitchen table against the wall in an effort to get their boogie on. After the jump you'll find my 21-song party-starter (best played in "shuffle" mode). Once you're done reading, post your own recent playlist creations, be they for hosting get-togethers, surviving the treadmill, commuting to the office,...

Michelle Williams has revealed that she has recorded a duet with dance star Ultra Naté. Ultra Naté, best known for her 1997 hit 'Free', will share vocals with the Destiny's Child singer on a track called 'I'm Waiting On You'. "I just did a big dance song with Ultra Naté," Williams told Digital Spy. "They're doing the final revisions on it at the moment and I'm very, very excited about it. "I think it's for her record, but it's a big track so of course I'll put it on mine too." Williams, who (more)...
