Update, 10:25 Am: Get your tickets now! WME is heading to trial next year over a fraud lawsuit from La La Land’s Oscar winning composer.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge this morning set May 8, 2023 as the date the court battle between Justin Hurwitz and the Endeavor-owned talent agency and the now divested Endeavor Content. The almost certain to be juicy jury trial in Dtla will be overseen by Judge Barbara Scheper.
“Despite WME’s Writer’s Guild experience, it’s previous claims of conflicts of interest and the forced sale of 80 percent of Endeavor Content, in less than a year, WME will have to explain to a Jury why it continued its tortious conduct and disregarded the fiduciary duty it owed to its client Justin Hurwitz,” the composer’s lead attorney Bryan Freedman told Deadline today after a status conference on the matter. “That date cannot come soon enough.

In August 2020, Bradley Rainey was named head of WME’s music for visual media department, succeeding veteran agent Amos Newman and taking on a roster of Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winners including Hans Zimmer, Randy Newman, Ludwig Göransson, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, among others. The 35-year-old Rainey, a graduate of USC’s film school, was well positioned for the promotion. He helped build the division in 2011, after three years at Endeavor and a stint in the agency’s mailroom. Variety recently spoke with Rainey about the challenges facing composers in an ever-changing business environment.

Amos Newman, who has spent the past decade as head of WME’s music for visual media department, is joining sister company Endeavor Content in the newly created role of senior vice president, music.
WME agent Bradley Rainey will now lead WME’s Music for Visual Media group, which represents such leading film composers as Hans Zimmer (“Interstellar”), Ludwig Göransson (“Black Panther”), Justin Hurwitz (“La La Land”), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (“Watchmen”) and music supervisors including Mary Ramos (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”).
During Newman’s tenure with WME, he helped build the agency’s roster of Oscar-, Grammy- and Emmy-winning clients, including his father, singer-songwriter and film composer Randy Newman. His department was also among the first to monetize the live-to-picture concert business with “Harry Potter Live,” which he will continue to manage in his new position.
