John Nichols, who wrote more than a dozen novels including The Milagro Beanfield War and The Sterile Cuckoo — both of which were turned into films by top directors — died Wednesday in Taos, Nm. He was 83.
Nichols, whose works often told stories of small-town New Mexico and social injustice, also co-wrote the screenplay for Milagro Beanfield War. Focused on a battle between mostly Latino farmers and local politicians and real estate developers, it became a 1988 film produced and directed by Robert Redford. The pic starring Ruben Blades, Richard Bradford and Sonia Braga won an Oscar for Dave Grusin’s jazzy score. Watch a trailer below.
Nichols’ 1965 debut novel The Sterile Cuckoo was adapted four years later into a film by Alan J. Pakula. It starred Liza Minnelli in her Oscar-nominated role as Pookie, a zany but honest woman who falls for a young man (Wendell Burton) just before he leaves for college.

Barack Obama was re-elected President of the United States last night. But we'll leave the analysis of the Electoral College to CNN and other news outlets.
TV Fanatic will instead, as you might expect, focus on the world of television, specifically: which anchors handled the evening's coverage the best? Which made us laugh the hardest? And which made us wish we had taken a swig of whatever she drank before going on the air?
Best Non-Use of a Hologram: CNN, for foregoing the ridiculous, expensive way in which it transported will.i.am into its studio four years ago.
Most Colorful Network: NBC turned its iconic 30 Rockefeller into an electoral map, while tracking the results in red and blue over the front of the famous building itself. It was the place to be for anyone remotely visually impaired.
Journalist We Most Believe May Have Been Drunk: Speaking of impaired... Diane Sawyer...

Presidential election nights historically bring out the best, the worst and sometimes just the weirdest in the men and women whose job it is to bring us the news.
Dan Rather was a veritable quote machine in his days at CBS, and as the results flowed in Tuesday (Nov. 6) in the contest between President Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, he found a number of spiritual successors. Here's a collection of some of the head-scratchingest quotes from the night's news coverage (refresh the page for updates).
"The feeling that people have about Barack Obama, that he's a hero and a historic figure. ... I think we're finding that people really don't want to let go of that, a great many people." -- Fox News analyst Brit Hume on why the race figures to be so close in the face of a sluggish economy
"There are a lot of lawyers in Ohio.

To understand how the conservative movement has been so successful in shaping government policy over the past couple of years, it helps to take a look at the organization behind the movement. One such organization is the American Legislative Exchange Council, or Alec. Alec first drew attention for its support for Florida's Stand Your Ground law, but that’s not all they're up to: in state after state, Alec has been pushing conservative plans for education, taxes, and the environment, with The Koch brothers giving an undisclosed amount of money to the organization.
John Nichols at The Nation summarizes Alec's modus operandi:
Alec is a critical arm of the right-wing network of policy shops that, with infusions of corporate cash, has evolved to shape American politics. Inspired by Milton Friedman’s call for conservatives to "develop alternatives to existing policies [and] keep them alive and available," Alec’s model legislation reflects long-term goals: downsizing government,...
