“Wicked Part Two” has been moved up a month, with the second and final chapter of Jon. M Chu’s stage adaptation opening not over Christmas Day 2025 but instead Thanksgiving weekend 2025. Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, Universal’s musical fantasy will drop on November 26, 2025. Why the date change? Well, would you want to open against “Avatar 3 if you don’t have to”?
This is the first bit of musical chairs to come after the Walt Disney Company announced a slew of new dates last week, including moving “Avatar 3” back a year to December 2025, moving the next two “Avengers” films each back a year to May 2026 and 2027 and slotting two “Star Wars” films for May 2026 and December 2026. Most of the dates were far enough into the future to not have named-and-dated titles impacted.

Universal Pictures looks to be pretty excited about its upcoming adaptation of the global Broadway hit Wicked as the studio is moving up Wicked Part Two to November 26, 2025. The film was originally set to bow on Christmas 2025, with Wicked Part One opening worldwide on November 27, 2024.
Jon M. Chu is directing both films with Cynthia Erivo set to play Elphaba and Ariana Grande on board to play Glinda.
The original musical tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, where the two forge an unlikely sisterhood and will empower each other in ways that neither foresees. But as dark forces of prejudice and oppression loom on the horizon, the choices they make will separate them, and will set them on different destinies that will change them, and Oz, for good.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt and by Tony winner David Stone, with whom Platt produced the blockbuster stage musical.

The 75th annual Directors Guild Awards have been handed out at the Beverly Hilton, and the night’s big award brought a bit of a surprise as Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once, beat out Steven Spielberg for the top prize.
The DGA is a strong predictor of Oscar success historically, missing the eventual Best Director winner only eight times in 74 years. Last year, the guild awarded Jane Campion its top film prize for The Power of the Dog, which marked a big step on her path to winning Best Director at the Oscars.
After two consecutive years awarding female directors its top prize (Jane Campion and Chloé Zhao) and watching them go on to take the corresponding Oscar, the Director’s Guild of America nominated a slate of men this year. Despite strong work from Sarah Polley for Women Talking and Gina Prince-Bythewood for...

Actress Olga Merediz stopped by Deadline’s Contenders: New York on Saturday to talk about reprising her role as Abuela Claudia from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Broadway musical In the Heights for Jon M. Chu’s Warner Bros film of the same name.
The Tony nominee called the film “a joy ride” and noted the different perspective she brought to Claudia’s story, 10 or so years down the line. “When you do a role, usually, you give it your all, finish and say goodbye,” she said onstage at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens. “But I had to remember what I did on Broadway and Off Broadway, with the difference that in 10 years, we all as human beings grow every year. So, I gave it more depth and more of the person I had become.”

The inevitable sequel to Step Up, 2006's surprise summer hit, Step Up 2 the Streets provides another dose of what its target teen audiences want: up-to-the-minute urban street dancing performed by sexy young stars displaying toned physiques and killer abs. As strictly formulaic as its predecessor, this installment generally gets the job done, essentially resembling a longform music video interrupted by a perfunctory plot.
The main attempt at originality in Step Up 2 is a reversal both of the gender and the striving of its protagonist. The original depicted the efforts of lead character Tyler (Channing Tatum, briefly seen here handing the reins over) to dance at an elite Baltimore arts academy rather than on the streets. This sequel deals with the desire of new student Andie (Briana Evigan) to get back to the streets.
Andie is naturally a misfit in her new surroundings, missing her old crew (a gang dubbed the 410, who in the film's openings scene is seen essentially terrorizing passengers on a subway train) and quickly running afoul of the school's stuffy, classically oriented director (Will Kemp), who dismisses her as "just a street dancer." Naturally, she also finds a romantic interest, in the form of hunky star student Chase (Robert Hoffman).
Comic relief is provided via various supporting characters, most notably a geeky student named Moose (Adam G. Sevani, scoring the film's biggest laughs) who reveals unexpected freestyle dance skills.
Director Jon M. Chu handles the dance, if not necessarily the dramatic, sequences with reasonable skill, thankfully avoiding the rapid-fire assemblage of random body parts afflicting so many modern musicals. The lead performers and large ensemble of supporting players get plenty of opportunity to show off their moves, especially in the climactic sequence in which Andie and her fellow students compete in a dancing battle dubbed The Streets that feels like the modern urban equivalent of an MGM musical production number.
Newcomer Evigan is appealing in the leading role, even if she doesn't quite convey the edginess that her character is supposed to possess, while Hoffman, though lacking the smoldering charisma of Tatum, brings a welcome lightness of tone to his portrayal.
The wall-to-wall soundtrack naturally features plenty of today's leading hip-hop and R&B artists, including Flo Rida, T-Pain, Missy Elliott and Trey Songz.

NEW YORK -- Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American rights to Ira Sachs' Toronto International Film Festival entry Married Life.
The post-World War II drama from Sidney Kimme Entertainment and Firm Films follows a meek man (Chris Cooper) who falls for a beautiful, younger woman (Rachel McAdams). His main obstacles are his good friend (Pierce Brosnan) with an equally strong attraction to her and his controlling wife (Patricia Clarkson), whom he'd like to spare the agony of divorce by poisoning her.
Married is an official selection of this month's New York Film Festival. The film received mixed reaction from an initial buyers' screening this summer. But its final cut debuted to a warmer response in Toronto. The deal closed late Sunday, toward festival's end.
Sachs (The Delta) and Oren Moverman (I'm Not There) adapted their screenplay from John Bingham's novel Five Roundabouts to Heaven. Sidney Kimmel, Jawal Nga, Steve Golin and Sachs produced the project. William Horberg, David Nicksay, Geoff Stier, Adam Shulman, Matt Littin, Alix Madigan-Yorkin and Bruce Toll served as executive producers.

Anthony Anderson will star opposite Frankie Muniz in MGM's sequel to Agent Cody Banks for director Kevin Allen. Shooting is scheduled to start next month in London. Dylan Sellers and David Nicksay are producing along with Splendid Pictures and Maverick Films. The sequel, penned by Don Rhymer, will see Muniz's title character go undercover as a foreign-exchange student in England. Anderson will star as Banks' special operative handler, much like Angie Harmon did in the first installment. MGM executives Elizabeth Cantillon, Eric Paquette and Stephanie Palmer are overseeing the project. The casting of Anderson to the project follows on the heels of his successful turn in the comedy Kangaroo Jack. He also has been in business before with MGM as one of the ensemble players in Barbershop for director Tim Story. Anderson is repped by manager ICM, Paul Young at Principato-Young and attorney Rick Genow at Stone, Meyer & Genow. He is onscreen in Malibu's Most Wanted. Anderson next stars in My Baby's Mama and has a cameo in Scary Movie 3, both for Miramax Films. Earlier this month, Anderson wrapped shooting a pilot for Warner Bros. Television that he co-created titled All About the Andersons.

As the result of a budgetary impasse, MGM has found another director for its sequel to Agent Cody Banks. Kevin Allen, who directed Warner Bros. Pictures' 1999 hairdressing comedy The Big Tease, is in final negotiations to come aboard to helm Agent Cody Banks 2. He is replacing Harald Zwart, who filmed the original and was on tap to handle the sequel. But Zwart stepped down during the weekend because of budgetary concerns. Banks 2 begins shooting next month in London, with Dylan Sellers and David Nicksay producing with Splendid Pictures and Maverick Films.

Cops can tell if you're lying or telling the truth by your eyes. If they dart to the right while answering a question, they know you're tapping into the creative part of your brain and fabricating something; if they go left, you're using automatic pilot to retrieve information.
Ask me if Warner Bros.' "The Negotiator" will be a sleeper summer hit and garner end-of-year critics awards and my eyes go left and I say, emphatically, "Yes".
A taut psychological actioner from Regency Enterprises, "The Negotiator" has Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey squaring off in this riveting, propulsive entertainment. While the stalwart performers on the marquee will surely attract substantial business, word-of-mouth will propel "The Negotiator" to boxoffice success and, down the line, rental stardom.
Jackson stars as Danny Roman, the Chicago Police Department's top hostage negotiator, a brilliant and gutty guy with a beautiful marriage. But Danny's world implodes when he is charged with murder and embezzlement by the department's Internal Affairs Division. There's a circumstantial trail and Danny must give up his gun and badge.
Danny is left with but one resort -- prove his own innocence by taking the law into his own hands. He takes an office full of IAD employees hostage, hoping to "negotiate" himself to the real truth behind the departmental murder and embezzlement. But Danny knows that he needs a strong negotiator on the other side to maintain the balance and thus allow a clear shot at the truth. He demands that Chris Sabian (Spacey), a cool and cerebral negotiator from another precinct, be brought in to mediate.
Part noir/cop story and part psychological chiller, the scenario is a blistering and brainy blend of elements. Screenwriters James De Monaco and Kevin Fox have forged a perfectly calibrated mix of action and emotional drama. The structural wiring is intricate and explosive, and it's tapped to the max by F. Gary Gray's robust direction.
At center, of course, is the "duel" between Roman and Sabian, with both using all their professional wiles and guiles to control the situation. Jackson and Spacey are terrific, with Jackson exuding a dignified and daring vulnerability and Spacey oozing confident strength. As he did in "Usual Suspects", Spacey flecks his character with amusing, unexpected rhythms. It seems likely that both these performances will negotiate praise as two of the year's best.
Supporting players are well-chosen, including Regina Taylor as Roman's supportive wife and David Morse, whose imperious glower makes him particularly credible as a Chicago police commander. Special praise goes to casting director David Rubin for the apt assemblage of Midwest cop types, including Ron Rifkin, John Spencer and the late J.T. Walsh.
Under Gray's masterful guidance, technical contributions are marvelous. Russell Carpenter's hard-noir cinematography swathes Michigan Avenue with a sinister malevolence, perfect for the story, while editor Christian Wagner's percussive cuts torque the tension to the fitting extreme. And Graeme Revell's sinewy score goes straight to our gut.
