Slumdog Millionaire producer Tabrez Noorani’s hard-hitting directorial debut is about an Indian village girl sold into slavery and shipped to California
This nightmarish Indian sex-trafficking drama about a village girl sold into modern slavery is told with passion and urgency by Tabrez Noorani, a producer on Lion and Slumdog Millionaire making his directing debut. Love Sonia has the glossy production values of those movies, but Noorani is going for something harder-hitting here, inspired by the true story of an Indian girl found in a container ship in California. It is powerful filmmaking, but I found questionable the packaging of sexual violence with the uplifting notes of mainstream entertainment.
Mrunal Thakur gives a performance of quiet intensity as Sonia, a shy 17-year-old whose father sells her sister Preeti (Riya Sisodiya) to clear his debts. “I’ll get you a nice job in Mumbai,” coos the female trafficker to Preeti. Their...

We discussed with them the film’s striking commitment to authenticity, and just how much of a challenge it was to shoot, and to create. Meanwhile Pinto also talks about the lack of good roles for women in Hollywood, particularly those from different cultures.

With Asia representing a whopping 65% of the earth’s population, it’s small wonder that the continent’s film industries are becoming more influential on the world stage. By some measures, China’s rising box office numbers have already surpassed those of the U.S., and India’s film business is the world’s largest by number of films produced.
That’s why the mission of the Asian World Film Festival, which is to strengthen ties between the Asian and Hollywood film industries, is critical to establishing avenues of communication between filmmakers and film executives in the U.S. and in Asia.

Love Sonia had its world premier in London 21st June 2018 and a selection of the actors, actresses, and the director himself were on hand to answer questions about the film.
The core of the movie is its desire to shed light on sex trafficking and how this illegal trade operates, often in plain sight.
Richa Chadda, who plays a prostitute called Madhuri, warned people that you might think this is a problem that is miles away but we live in bubbles, unaware of what’s happening right around the corner. The cast were emphatic that the movie would make a difference.
More than one mentioned how it was very lucky to be working on such a sensitive project and hoped that “Love Sonia” would help save those being taken and abused. Sonia herself, played by Mrunal Thakur, hoped that the movie would help remind people who worthy they were.

The London Indian Film Festival began its 2018 run with the world premier of Love Sonia, a challenging movie directed by Tabrez Noorani and centred around the menace which illegal sex trafficking causes around the globe. It’s a topic which many might like to sweep under the carpet and pretend doesn’t happen in their neighbourhood, but that is a complacency which this film dispels.
The story follows Sonia and her sister Preeti as they go from humble beginnings hundreds of kilometres north of Mumbai, living on a farm with their parents, to being dragged into a dark world where they are nothing but a commodity for those who would use and abuse them. Preeti is older and, according to her father, prettier whilst poor Sonia is called a “bull” and chastised for buying lightening cream. However, the girls dream of getting married and going to Mumbai when they grow older.

There’s always a sense of accomplishment when something which began as a challenging venture turns into an annual staple and Cary Sawhney, the executive and programming director for the London Indian Film Festival (Liff), should be proud of what Liff has blossomed into – the UK and Europe’s largest South Asian film festival.
Now in its ninth year, Liff has certainly not rested on its laurels and has another packed programme of eye-opening cinema, which now not only includes showings in London and Birmingham but has also added Manchester for the first time. If you only thought India cinema was about Bollywood then you absolutely have to see one of the films on offer this year. It won’t matter which because they will all change your perception of Asian cinema.

Manoj Bajpayee: My character in ‘Love Sonia’ is one of the deadliest characters I have played so far
The fine actor Manoj Bajpayee is one of the most talented actors in Bollywood who can rightly be called ‘the master of impeccable performances’. In his phenomenal cinematic journey, the actor has always taken up challenging roles and delivered with great ease. We have always seen him portraying many negative roles be it gangster in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ series, a psycho in ‘Road’ a dangerous faction leader in ‘Tevar’, the actor has always made character’s alive with his performance. But the two time national award winner is all set to be seen one of his deadliest avatar in his upcoming film ‘Love Sonia’, thereby raising his own bar.

Demi has been involved in campaigns against human trafficking for years and has her own non-profit organization called "Thorn" which helps such victims. She loved the script and was happy to play the part of the social worker." Another American actor Mark Duplas, plays a wealthy man who encounters the protagonist Sonia (Riya Sisodia) in La. Editor’s Note: I met Sean Williams at Comic-Con’s Hall H between panels on the first day of the Con this past July, chatting as people do. It turns out that Sean is a filmmaker, and he’s working on a sci-fi project – travel to another planet! strong women! – that sounds really great.
Last week Sean let me know that he was ready to start “officially” talking about the project, and wanted to know what I’d like to know. I told him I wanted to know, basically, everything. How the project got started, who’s involved, where he is in the process, etc. What follows is the narrative he wrote up on the spot on his phone and sent to me via Facebook Messenger in response. One long narrative that was completely engaging. He even copied and inserted biographies as he went along. It’s no wonder the man has won writing awards.

The "Slumdog Millionaire" kids aren't the only members of the production's India team getting a boost.
IFC's production of "Bollywood Hero" starring Chris Kattan has tapped "Slumdog Millionaire" partner Take One Prods. to supply the crew for the three-part miniseries' India-based efforts.
Line producer Tabrez Noorani and his team, including choreographer Longinus Fernandes (who did the "Slumdog" closing credits dance sequence), will assist the show's production, which begins in Mumbai this weekend.
Also, the network has signed actors Julian Sands ("A Room With a View") and Neha Dhupia (the former Miss India who appeared in "Shootout at Lokhandwala") for featured roles in the project.
IFC hopes interest in the Oscar-winning film boosts the viewership prospects for "Bollywood." Kattan plays a fictionalized version of himself, a frustrated Hollywood actor who ventures to India to star in a traditional Bollywood film.
