It’s no surprise that Earth’s ice has been melting. Average global temperatures are increasing slightly over two degrees Fahrenheit—seemingly minuscule but enormous compared to the warming rates in prior years.
The ten warmest years in Earth’s history have all occurred in the past decade. Though this change has been anticipated, a new study conducted by glaciologists at the University of California, Irvine, has revealed an unexpected finding: the so-called Doomsday Glacier is in jeopardy of eroding within the next ten to 20 years, much sooner than the previously estimated 100 to 500 years.
The Doomsday Glacier is a nickname for West Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier, derived from the glacier’s potential to raise sea levels by as much as 60 centimeters. Each day, the ocean eats away at the glacier’s base, causing the glacier to recede deeper into its basin. Salty seawater from the ocean can contain heat, which...

On Friday and Saturday, photos of the Northern Lights reaching as far south as Alabama spread online — the result of a rare extreme solar storm that crossed North America, with added visibility of the aurora borealis on Friday and Saturday nights. CNN invited Bill Nye (the Science Guy) to explain the natural phenomenon to its audience.

Nye said that while “we might think of the sun as a solid object or a disk,” it is actually always spinning. “About every month,” Nye continued, “the northern and southern parts of the sun, what humans call the north and south parts of the sun, spin a little faster than the middle.”

John Oliver spotlighted Simu Liu and John Boyega on Last Week Tonight for their beginnings as stock photo models.
In the last segment of the HBO show, Oliver talked about stock photos, noting that that’s how the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars got their start.
“Stock photos provide an income stream, not just for photographers, but also for actors starting out,” Oliver said.
Oliver cut to a photo of Boyega in a picture posing as a student. The late-night show host then presented Liu with a series of photos “pointing at a laptop, looking at the camera during a group project and exercising in a totally normal, not at all unhinged way.” Oliver was poking fun at the way Liu was posing while seemingly exercising for the picture.

Ahead of the 2024 Oscars, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (Nti) launched its “Make Nukes History” campaign in Los Angeles, using the nominated film Oppenheimer to expand the conversation on nuclear threats.
As explained on the Nti’s official site, the campaign involves billboards, an art installation, street posters and an open letter signed by various stars, calling for the use of nuclear weapons to be ceased.
In a statement shared with the announcement of the campaign, Matthew Modine, who was part of Oppenheimer‘s cast, writes, “Every person should be educated about the incredible destructive power of nuclear weapons. Understanding the threat illuminates a necessary path toward their elimination.”
Modine adds, “Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been directly harmed by radioactive fallout from the hundreds of nuclear explosions conducted on U.S. soil. From the moment of the first atomic bomb test at Los Alamos, New Mexico, our entire planet has been at risk.

After climate scientists began talking about Antarctica’s “doomsday glacier” in recent days, previous warnings from television personality and scientist Bill Nye have resurfaced – and gone viral.
According to new studies, the glacier — nicknamed because its collapse could cause unprecedented sea level rise — began melting rapidly in the 1940s.
During a CNN interview in 2021, Nye discussed the impacts that the glacier melting could have.
“It is estimated that the ocean will rise about half a meter. You may think, ‘I’ve been around half a meter of snow.’ But this would be catastrophic,” he said. “Places like southern Florida would be underwater. People would leave… It won’t happen instantly but it would happen soon enough.”
Nye said climate scientists have been predicting a rise in sea level for decades, though people are just starting to listen.
“This gets back to the problem that we’ve been talking about for 30 years.

Ed Begley Jr. was born in Los Angeles, the son of character actor Ed Begley and Amanda Huff, who he later learned was not his biological mother. After graduating from Los Angeles Valley College, he began his acting career in the late 1960s. After several smaller roles on TV and films, he landed as a regular on the legendary cult show “St. Elsewhere,” as Doctor Victor Ehrlich. After the series ended memorably, he continued his run in TV and film, including as a series regular on “Gary Unmarried” and in Christopher Guest’s “Best in Show.

The Writers Guild of America is escalating its pressure on the Television Academy after the organization removed the outstanding writing for a variety series/special award from the Emmys telecast.
On Tuesday the union sent a letter from major variety series and specials hosts and a petition signed by more than 1,400 members to Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego, calling on the organization to reinstate the category in the awards ceremony primetime broadcast. Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Jon Stewart, Amber Ruffin, Colin Jost and Michael Che were among the members signing on to the letter to Abrego, which stated that the decision “devalues their [writers’] work, and our series, by sidelining writers from being honored during the Emmys’ main telecast.”

Found in your local “Shower After Watching” section of the suspicious flea market around the corner is 1993’s Skinner. And it’s probably the only movie in that bin to feature an acting performance from daytime talk show host Ricki Lake. Seriously.

Ending the year in signs is the hilarious, adventurous, sharp-tongued era of Sagittarius.
There’s truly nothing like them. They are quirky, mysterious and full of life. While they naturally grab the attention in the room, they feel most comfortable when they’re in their lonesome.
Sagittarius is the jack-of-trades sign; the sign that takes up space in every all industries — whether they be an actor, comedian or a bus driver — their versatility allows them to do it all. And that flexibility helps fuel their “I’ll try anything once” mindset. To them, what is life if you’re not living it to your fullest? The only thing you have to beware of is their slick mouth. Between Sagittarius, Virgo and Aries it’s hard to tell which sign is more brutally honest. Truly, to know Sagittarius is to love them. And if you don’t love…it doesn’t...

Because "Futurama" is set 1,000 years in the future, show creators David X. Cohen and Matt Groening had to invent a sci-fi conceit that would provide an organic reason to include celebrity cameos. Thanks to a special fluid, human heads can be kept alive in jars more or less indefinitely. In the very first episode, the head of Dick Clark hosted a televised New Year's Eve special to ring in the year 3000. Clark played himself. Since then, multiple other celebrities have played their own severed heads, including the Beastie Boys, the cast of "Star Trek," Al Gore, Conan O'Brien, Beck, Lucy Liu, Penn Jillette, and most recently, Bill Nye.
Of course, Cohen and Groening were more creative than merely storing severed heads in jars, and multiple other notable actors have continued to appear on "Futurama" as robots, aliens, space deities, and other sci-fi creatures. John Goodman, for instance, played the homicidal...

Like the notion that it’s always 5 p.m. somewhere, there’s nearly always a vintage “Law & Order” airing with do-right Detective Ed Green, played by Jesse L. Martin. So when a new network series arrives with Martin in the lead role, it raises my hopes for must-see TV..
My irrational self wanted to love this intelligent, well-crafted show — but my rational side was beset by doubts, which the first three episodes available for review failed to dispel.
“The Irrational” stars Martin as Alec Mercer, a world-famous behavioral scientist who straddles between academia and more hands-on pursuits. He is a science guy, but not Bill Nye. The show’s title refers to his belief that even in man’s irrational behavior there are detectable motifs. The newest episode of "Futurama," called "Rage Against the Vaccine," is 25 minutes of every Covid-19 anxiety all rolled into a condensed ball. "Rage" opens with a celebration hosted by the head of Bill Nye (himself), finally declaring that Covid-19 has been defeated. Note that "Futurama" takes place in the year 3023. "It's felt like a thousand years," Nye says. "It was actually a little longer," Bender (John Dimaggio) corrects him. Given some recent reports about new variants and new spikes in Covid-19, that prediction feels dismayingly accurate.
But now that Covid-19 has been defeated, there's a new pandemic at play: Explovid-23. This is a virus that causes coughing and sneezing, but also an attack of inexplicable rage and a desire to punch others in the face. This, also, feels dismayingly accurate. The characters all test for the disease by swabbing their noses with enormous Q-tips, and it's revealed that Leela (Katey Sagal) has contracted it.

Annihilation (Alex Garland)
More terrifying than any creature Hollywood could dream up is the unraveling of one’s mind—the steady loss of a consciousness as defined by the memories, motivations, and knowledge built up from decades of experience and reflection. With Annihilation, Alex Garland’s beautiful, frightening follow-up to Ex Machina, he portrays this paralyzing sensation with a sense of vivid imagination, and also delivers a cadre of horrifying creatures to boot. – Jordan R. (full review)

Barbarian (Zach Cregger)

Bill Nye is 67 years old now, but in most ways he’s still the same enthusiastic, charming, bow-tied dude who hosted the iconic 1990s series “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” Or you might know him from the Netflix science series “Bill Nye Saves the World.” But the trained mechanical engineer still has lofty goals in working to educate the public about the world of science and how it can spur them to take action to better their lives and save a vulnerable earth. “That’s why I did this show. I wanted to change the world,” Nye says on his ambitious and apocalyptic six-episode Peacock series “The End is Nye,” “I want people to take action.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Nye is the co-writer, executive producer and host of the docuseries that’s designed to scare viewers into seizing the opportunity to halt potential disasters before they threaten the planet.

If you're a child of the 1990s, then odds are you know Bill Nye as "the Science Guy." But he hasn't slowed down since his wildly popular children's television program - he's continued to advocate for the importance of science in all of our lives, most recently as CEO of the Planetary Society.
His work has also centered on addressing one of the most pressing issues today: climate change. For Earth Day, Nye shares his memory of attending the very first Earth Day in Washington DC in 1970, the tools we really need in the climate-change fight, and why we should always remain optimistic.
Earth Day was organized in Washington. I rode my Schwinn bicycle - at that point, I believe I had a Schwinn Continental that was green - and I rode it down and I locked it to a flag pole at the Washington Monument. I think if you tried that now,...

Linoleum
A hit at genre festivals around the world, Linoleum is the story of TV science educator Cameron (Jim Gaffigan), who is inspired to start buildinghis own spacecraft after a piece of space junk lands in his back garden. It’s also many other things, exploring a suburban world full of doppelgängers, weird coincidences and sports cars which fall out of the sky. As it prepared to screen at Fantaspoa go on digital release in the UK, its creator, Colin West, agreed to meet up for a chat. We began by talking about real cases of space junk falling on people’s houses, and I asked him if that was one of his inspirations.
“Absolutely, yeah,” he says. “Definitely, that was an inspiration. It was funny, one of the big inspirations being Bill Nye the Science Guy or these scientists that become sort of like a spokesperson for science for that.

Country Gold (Mickey Reece)
The cost of fame sits in the living room wondering aloud whether dad will be home for Christmas. Why these two young boys’ voices have been deepened to sound like they’re 40-year-old drunks slurring through a bender is beyond me (an assumption of it being a dream or game is squashed once mom enters without the effect being called out), but their words have meaning. Troyal’s (Mickey Reece channeling Garth Brooks) star has risen to unimaginable heights and he’s embraced it to the point where his “good ol’ boy” demeanor can’t quite hide the growing ego beneath a cowboy hat. Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Linoleum,” featuring comedian Jim Gaffigan as a middle aged man of science facing a point of his life in crisis, facilitated by a rocket landing in his backyard. In select theaters beginning February 24th, see local listings.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
“Linoleum” features Gaffigan as Cameron, a TV science host much like Bill Nye, whose kid-oriented show has been moved to midnight due to low ratings. At the same time his wife Erin (Rhea Seehorn) is drifting away from him, as she negotiates her own career. Cameron’s teen daughter Nora (Katelyn Nacon) is going through her own growing pains, as she falls for Marc (Gabriel Rush) and their family worlds collide as Marc’s father is about to take over Cameron’s show. When an Apollo era rocket falls into Cameron’s back yard, his life will never be the same.

If you're not snorting up "Cocaine Bear" this weekend, you might want to find your way over to "Linoleum," a new drama starring Jim Gaffigan that debuted at the 2022 South By Southwest Film Festival and is currently playing in select theaters across the United States. Written and directed by Colin West, the film follows Gaffigan as Cameron, an astronomer who once dreamed of being an astronaut but settled for creating and hosting "Above and Beyond," a Bill Nye-esque educational program that airs in the not-so-primetime-slot at midnight, despite being geared towards kids.
Cameron is about to drown in a midlife crisis. His wife Erin (Rhea Seehorn of "Better Call Saul") wants a divorce, and his father's dementia is getting worse. Adding to his troubles, PBS is picking up his science program, but Cameron being replaced as the host by Kent Armstrong (a role also played by Gaffigan donning an...

Jim Gaffigan as Cameron in Linoleum. Courtesy of Shout! Studios
Bear with me on this one, since Linoleum is a unique and admirable film to savor if you approach it with a different mindset. Jim Gaffigan stars as Cameron, a 50ish sad sack with superb astrophysics credentials who dreamt of becoming an astronaut, but settled for hosting a Bill Nye type of kids’ science show in a lousy time slot on a marginal TV station. His wife and former co-host Erin is divorcing him. Their two kids barely notice his presence. He’s getting less respect than Rodney Dangerfield, but taking all the hits without a whimper. Or a one-liner.
Problems pile on quickly. Instead of getting the Saturday morning spot in the schedule he’d been promised, he’s replaced by a younger, more accomplished version of himself (also Gaffigan). His dad has severe dementia. A satellite crashes in their back yard,...

If we lived in an alternate universe where Bill Nye never got his big break, relegated to shooting his lo-fi children’s show from his garage and submitting tapes to a local affiliate in hopes he’d advance to a prime Sunday morning slot, it would look something like the one Cameron Edwin (Jim Gaffigan) occupies. As his marriage is also on the brink of collapse, his midlife crisis conveniently dovetails with an old Russian rocket falling in his backyard. Edwin decides to make the most of the opportunity and attempt to fulfill his dreams of being an astronaut. An effective concoction of cosmic mystery and earnest emotion to elevate its small-scale, homespun design, Colin West’s Linoleum evolves into a nifty, heartfelt sci-drama.

Much like movies, video game companies have historically been eager to make games based on popular TV shows. To be fair, certain shows do lend themselves to great games. Capcom was able to spin gold out of the Disney Afternoon animated lineup, and Konami’s big arcade hits were based on the ever-so-popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, an extremely early take on The Simpsons, and an X-Men cartoon.
Sometimes, though, you got some really weird adaptations. While some are remembered for the wrong reasons, others have been mostly lost to time despite being based on once-popular properties. Here are just some of the most bizarre and forgotten games based on popular TV shows.
15. The Real Ghostbusters (Arcade)
In 1987, developer Data East took a bird’s eye run-and-gun with crazy monster designs called Meikyuu Hunter G and spruced it up with an extra player and bells and whistles that made it qualify as a Ghostbusters tie-in.

Jim Gaffigan is best known for his comedic antics, whether it's on the stand-up stage or as a myriad of supporting characters in films like "Going the Distance" or shows like "Bob's Burgers." Every now and then, Gaffigan digs into more dramatic territory with films like "Chappaquiddick" and "Light from Light," but you've never seen the comedian in a role that resonates as emotionally as his performance in the upcoming indie "Linoleum."
A selection from the 2022 South by Southwest Film Festival, "Linoleum" finds Gaffigan playing Cameron, an astronomer who once dreamed of being an astronaut but settled for creating and hosting "Above and Beyond," a Bill Nye-esque educational program that isn't exactly rolling in the high ratings, largely thanks to its midnight timeslot. But Cameron is about to get a boost of ambition after his wife (Rhea Seehorn) asks for a divorce, he loses his show to PBS where...

LeVar Burton is making a return to children’s entertainment with Sound Detectives, a podcast debuting this spring from SiriusXM’s Stitcher.
Created by Burton in collaboration with Julia Smith and Joanna Sokolowski, Sound Detectives begins with the premise that sounds are starting to go missing in the world, and the culprit appears to be the so-called Sound Swindler. To solve the case, the characters Detective Hunch and Audie the Ear will lead kids on a narrative adventure that engages their listening skills as they compare and contrast sounds. Each episode will also take place in a different location in the world, showcasing different cultures, as young listeners try to identify what a sound is and where it is coming from.
Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Friday, Burton said that as a military kid growing up overseas, he often relied on the radio for entertainment...

(Warning: Spoilers ahead for Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer”).
It was fright night on Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” but the only thing to be truly afraid of was elimination. And unfortunately, that was the case for Sir Bugaboo. But he wasn’t afraid of being guessed right away (and he certainly wasn’t afraid of no ghosts).
Heading into the episode, fans didn’t get much in the way of clues on Sir Bugaboo’s identity. All they knew was that his costume was very reminiscent of the Cheshire Cat from “Alice in Wonderland,” and his mask-ray revealed a bow tie. As a result, some fans speculated it might be Bill Nye the Science Guy, known for his bow ties in each video. Other suggested it could be “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who has released bow tie collections in the past.
In the end though,...

(Warning: Spoilers ahead for Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer”).
In honor of Thanksgiving, fans are getting a double helping of “The Masked Singer” this week. Unfortunately, it meant another double elimination on Wednesday night.
This time around, fans saw Sir Bugaboo and Scarecrow competing against Snowstorm for a spot in the semifinals, set to air on Fox on Thursday night. In the end, Snowstorm came out victorious, and will face Harp and the Lambs in the next round. Sadly, Snowstorm’s victory meant the end of the road for Sir Bugaboo and Scarecrow.
Leading into the episode, the only clue that fans had about Sir Bugaboo was a bow tie, courtesy of his Mask-Ray at the start of the season. Many initial guesses included Bill Nye, who is famous for wearing a bow tie in his videos. But, in the end, the Cheshire Cat-esque character was...

Teens across America rely on educational TikTok videos for test prep. Soon, those students will have an opportunity to Revyze their study plans. That’s the name of a new app that is currently available in France and plans to expand to the U.S. in the near future.
With its vertical orientation and its swipeable video feed, Revyze is clearly inspired by TikTok. The main advantage of the new app is that it filters out non-educational content. That lets students focus on their studies, where Revyze — and its library of peer-to-peer videos — can be of use.
Revyze raised 2 million pre-seed round earlier this year. Per TechCrunch, the app debuted in its home country ahead of the annual baccalauréat test, an all-important exam for graduating high schoolers. A promotional campaign led to 35,000 downloads and a trip up the local app charts. If you speak French, you can check out some student testimonials,...
