The best legacy sequels concern themselves with the weight of the decades that have passed and the long-term effects of the events separated by the gulf of time between entries. While these stories occur across the wide spectrum of entertainment, the horror genre is uniquely positioned to explore such follow ups. After all, just as years affect a life, so too does the horrors of one blood-soaked Halloween night.
Long before Halloween (2018) brought Jamie Lee Curtis back into the fold as Laurie Strode in an effort to explore her deeply repressed trauma, Halloween H20 (1998) set out to accomplish just that. Itself twenty years removed from John Carpenter’s original Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 is one of the most successful films of its kind and a high point for the franchise, providing emotional depth and a satisfying conclusion to Laurie Strode’s narrative. Life goes on this summer for Academy internships, in a virtual way. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is plowing forward with the fourth year of Academy Gold, its entertainment industry internship enhancement and mentorship program for students and young professionals from underrepresented communities. During the summer, as the pandemic continues, the program will be virtual, with an extension program in the fall for those students who delayed their summer internships.
“In the face of a pandemic and our continued efforts to drive equity in our industry, the decision on whether or not to proceed with the Academy Gold program this summer was very clear,” said Academy COO Christine Simmons. “Our pipeline program is even more critical at a time when underrepresented communities are being disproportionately affected by Covid-19. The needs are heightened, and we are dedicated to delivering an educational, fun and rewarding virtual experience for these...

Cinematographers who are opposing the decision to curtail four Oscar presentations on the telecast have said a “productive” Thursday night meeting with Academy brass may lead to a reversal of the exclusions.
American Society of Cinematographers president Kees van Oostrum said in a letter to members Friday that he expects a decision by the end of the day. The gathering included Academy CEO Dawn Hudson and Academy president John Bailey.
“Last night, a group of our concerned members — myself, Hoyte van Hoytema, Rachel Morrison and Emmanuel Lubezki — had a very productive and positive meeting with Dawn Hudson, CEO of the Academy, with John Bailey present,” van Oostrum said. “Today they will let us know if the Academy will (hopefully) reverse its decision in regards to the Awards program.”

More than anyone, acclaimed cinematographer turned Academy President John Bailey has become the face of the decision to have the winners of four Oscar categories — Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Live Action Short, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling — accept their Oscars during commercial breaks on the telecast in order to shorten the show. Their truncated walks to the podium and speeches will then be swiftly edited into the broadcast for the national audience watching the Academy Awards on ABC.
Bailey believes this long-debated solution to the lengthy show — which ran three hours and 45 minutes last year, for the lowest ratings ever — will work seamlessly, he told IndieWire at the cinematography film festival Camerimage in Poland last November.
IndieWire: Now I realize not everyone’s highlight of the evening is Roger Deakins finally winning, but I’m wondering, in context of Camerimage – which is this wonderful celebration of cinematography – does it...

On Thursday (June 14), the motion picture academy announced the results of its annual Board of Governors election. Alfred Molina prevailed in a hotly contested contest to be one of the three representatives from the actors branch while Susanne Bier won her bid to be a voice for the directors branch.
Each of the 17 branches of the academy is represented by three governors who serve three-year terms. Those terms are staggered such that one governor from each branch is up for re-election each year. And no governor may serve for more than nine uninterrupted years.

Given the myriad challenges that face the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it’s surprising that more than 180 members vied for 17 available spots on the 54-member Board of Governors, which oversees the Academy’s strategic mission, financial health and the Oscars. The run-off voting ended May 18 to cull the field to four nominees per branch. The elected 2018–19 Board of Governors will assume their posts on July 1.
The Academy’s 17 branches are each represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. Actor Tom Hanks is leaving, having served his three-year term, while producer Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg publicist Marvin Levy and director Michael Mann did not seek re-election.
Among the hopefuls who did not make the cut are actresses Meg Ryan and Brie Larson, screenwriter John Ridley, producer Michael De Luca, public relations branch member Rob Friedman, and executive Michael Barker.

At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.
Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.
For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. Marvin Levy, currently a governor in the public relations branch,...

Come Monday, film producer and executive Bill Mechanic’s sizzling letter of resignation from the governing board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—which he has since said was not intended for public consumption—will set the agenda for what might be the most interesting Academy board election since, well, ever.
Though he effectively stepped down as one of the Academy’s 54 current governors on April 9, Mechanic’s letter of explanation to president John Bailey leaked publicly only this week. In it, he described a list of perceived problems and leadership failures that have been discussed endlessly within the Academy, but almost never in open conversation. It’s all there: The Oscar ratings collapse; the never-ending museum expense; staff churn; deep concern at the attempts to enforce a moral policy; fear that inclusion now trumps achievement; suspicion that some internal player leaked word of a harassment claim...

Darby Stanchfield has inhabited the role of Abby Whelan on “Scandal” for seven seasons, but for the upcoming episode “The Noise,” she takes on one of her most important positions yet — director.
“I feel really grateful to have been given this opportunity before the end of the series,” Stanchfield tells Variety. “Shondaland is a great example of one of the companies in this town that’s all about empowering women and people of color, and it was a really, really good opportunity to get in there.”
Stanchfield started shadowing the series’ directors during season 5 after watching co-star Tony Goldwyn behind-the-camera and wondering why she wasn’t trying the thing she, too, had always been interested in. Last season, she took the first step when she teamed up with the show’s writers and producers, including Shonda Rhimes, for a web series entitled “Gladiator Wanted.” She helped develop the series, and directed it as well.

Thanks to new rules, this year’s Academy Board of Governors race was more intense than usual. The Academy’s 17 branches each has three governors on the board; they can serve three consecutive three-year terms. One seat is up for reelection every year. The Board of Governors actually runs the show at the Academy, determining the strategy and mission, and keeping tabs on its financial health.

This year, the race was opened up to allow any of the 6200-plus Academy members to run for the board. Before, the membership voted for 50% of a nominating committee that selected candidates to present to the Board. This yielded the same favorites over and over again.
Now, members of each branch can pick their own contenders. Academy CEO Dawn Hudson clearly sees the benefit of a more diverse board of Governors. In an email to members announcing...

Composer Michael Giacchino, documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy, makeup artist Lois Burwell and cinematographer Daryn Okada have been elected to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization announced Friday. However, less than six months after the directors branch of the Academy failed to nominate Ava DuVernay for best director for her work on Selma, she lost in her quest to be elected by the 382 members of the branch to one of the board of governors seats. Instead, the branch reelected incumbent Michael Mann to another three-year term. The other incumbent governors

When a crew wraps on the shooting of a film, a cinematographer's work is still far from finished -- he has to color correct the whole thing. In this video, cinematographer Daryn Okada ("Mean Girls," "American Reunion,") demonstrates how he did the color correction for the film "Dolphin Tale 2." He compares the digital process to completing a piece of wooden furniture; once you've carved the shape and constructed the design you want, the piece still needs the color and varnish to give it a rich sheen. That's what Okada is doing with images. With color correction, a cinematographer can manipulate colors and contrasts, completely changing the light in an image. With split screens showing both the raw and final images from "Dolphin Tale 2," Okada shows how easily he is able to manipulate the time of day, add a glow in the sky, or simply make everything look more lush and appealing.

If I were the one running Warner Bros, I must admit it would not have occurred to me to pursue the idea of a sequel to 2011's "Dolphin Tale". After all, the first film was the story of how a dolphin lost her tail in a crab trap, only to find her way to an aquarium and animal rescue facility in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she was eventually fitted with an innovative prosthetic. Story told, right? The sequel answers that question with a resounding no, and in doing so, it serves to highlight just how difficult it is for people, even with the best of intentions, to keep these animals in captivity and in good health at the same time. In its own small way, the film is part of the same conversation as "Blackfish," making the case that it's important work, but under carefully controlled circumstances only, and never...

As much as I love Lake Placid, I haven’t thought about it for a while. That is, until Scream Factory gave me a reason to think about it, by stuffing their new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of the film in my mailbox. I had no idea before sitting down to revisit the film in beautiful high definition that a lot of people seem to consider this a “bad” movie. This is shocking to me. This is one of the most sarcastic movies ever made, and I love every second of it. How can someone sit down to watch a movie that contains Betty White feeding live cows to a giant crocodile, And calling law enforcement agents “cocksuckers”, and not love it? It’s hilarious. This is one of the greatest modern examples of the horror/comedy hybrid. I have no idea how anyone could hate this movie, but you can’t please everyone,...

"If I had a dick, this is where I'd tell you to suck it!". That's right, kids! The great Betty White spoke those words way back in 1999 when Lake Placid took a bite out of theatres. The scene still brings a smile to my face, and given the Scream Factory's history, this Blu-ray will, too!

Halloween H20 20 Years Later serves its purpose in giving diehard fans a taste of the nostalgic. On that level it does work to an extent. And to be fair its actually shot quite well Daryn Okada turns in fantastic cinematography and Patrick Lussier does one hell of a job editing the picture. It boasts a few moments we receive a few laughs and a jarring sequence or two but in the end it doesnt feel much like a Halloween film despite the presence of Michael Myers. What it feels like is another average slasher with higherthanaverage production values and some familiar faces. Id hoped for a genius film I got a fair one at best.
