On Monday September 9th, The Creative Coalition held their annual Gala for the Spotlight Initiate Awards during the Toronto International Film Festival. Created in 2008, the Spotlight Initiative has served to support independent films that utilize the medium not only as an outlet for artistic expression but simultaneously as a relevant tool to create awareness and inspire society.
This year the honorees were Hill Harper, star and executive producer of Tommy Oliver's Tiff entry 1982, and star of "Covert Affairs", For Colored Girls, "CSI: NY" and Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films (Jobs, Side Effects, End of Watch), a co-venture between Regal Theaters and AMC (now owned by Chinese mogul Wang Jianlin, the wealthiest man in China, chairman of Dalian Wanda Group Corp., who just announced plans to create the world's largest movie studio in his home country).
Tom and Robin Bronk CEO of The Creative Coalition both attended Penn State University. And speaking of education, Robin made a point of reiterating the Creative Coalition's stand on public education, stating that the public schools are failing terribly in arts education and that the education of every child is a basic human right.
Robin Bronk also said, “We are pleased and quite proud to be honoring Hill Harper, star of CSI:ny and Executive Producer and star of Tommy Oliver's new film 1982, and Tom Ortenberg who is now CEO of Open Road, two individuals who – throughout their respective careers – have used their influential platforms within the entertainment industry to serve the common good.”
We had a great time catching up with old friends as well: Cotty Chubb whose next film The Dinner with Cate Blanchett was just announced and makes us all quite happy for him. Carol Polakoff was with Cotty and we made our usual promise to catch up with each other in L.A. We did catch up with Mark Urman of Paladin whose pick-up Metro Manila is U.K.’s Foreign-Language Oscar Entry.
We also spoke of his merger with 108 Media which is doing well. Sharing the dinner table with him and us were Susan Margolin, co-President of Cinedigm as well as old friends Paul Cohen, producer Bruce Weiss and Denise Kasell who has left the Coolidge Theater in Boston to return to her home in New York. Also spotted were Mark Amin who reminded me of those old days when video was king and he started the long-gone Trimark. Now head of Sobini Films, he has many projects happening.
The Creative Coalition is so gracious in hosting great events in Toronto, Sundance and having a weekly 5 minute session with President Obama. Based in New York City, the non-profit and non-partisan organization was founded in 1989 by important figures in the arts and entertainments fields. The group advocates for the importance of creative works to influence change in crucial social issues. For more information click Here.

Best known for his portrayal of Tommy Oliver from the Power Rangers, and as an undefeated Mma fighter, Sound On Sight got a chance to speak with Jason David Frank at the 2013 Montreal Comiccon.
****
Sound On Sight: How was it like playing the Green Power Ranger with everybody growing up with you and loving you all these years later?
Jason David Frank: Well it feels good. Especially now after so many years later I’m still a hero to many people, but uh, I know they’re my fans but I’m a fan of my fans. I probably stalk my fans more than they stalk me because I’m always checking out their Facebook pages.
SoS: And now you’re an Mma fighter, how’s that like?
Frank: Seven fights (…) haven’t lost one yet of which I’m happy. Haven’t been knocked out yet, so I’m happy.

The biggest takeaway from 1982, writer-director Tommy Oliver’s debut feature film, is that Hill Harper should simply be getting more roles. With a decades-spanning career that includes recurring television parts on the now defunct CSI: NY and Soul Food, the 47-year-old actor and writer has had the fate of many a black actor in Hollywood: steady work, yes, but with few opportunities for roles that appropriately show off his movie star potential. With 1982, that potential is on full display as Harper plays Timothy, a man struggling to raise his young daughter Maya (wonderful newcomer Troi Zee) in the midst of his wife Shenae’s (Sharon Leal) growing drug habit. Following in the...

Exclusive: CAA has signed Tommy Oliver, whose semi-autobiographical debut film 1982 premiered in Toronto last night to rousing applause at the Isabel Bader Theatre. The drama premiered in the Discovery Section and is the story of a father’s struggle to protect his 10-year old daughter from the reality of her mother’s addiction to crack. The film drew on Oliver’s upbringing in Philadelphia when the crack cocaine scourge decimated cities across the country. Keep an eye on this guy. Preferred Content is selling the film.

It's morphin' time! Twenty years ago today, on August 28, 1993, "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" premiered.
The kids show featured five teens (later six when the Green/White Ranger was added) being called upon to protect the world from Rita Repulsa. It originally starred Austin St. John as Jason Lee Scott, Thuy Trang as Trini Kwan, Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberly Hart, David Yost as Billy Cranston, Walter Emanuel Jones as Zack Taylor and Jason David Frank as Tommy Oliver.
When they transformed into the Power Rangers, the teens got a variety of weapons, including giant machines called Zords.
The Power Rangers fought a variety of monsters, some of them voiced by some of today's hottest TV stars, including "Breaking Bad" leading man Bryan Cranston. His last name was also used to name the Blue Ranger.

The last of the Tiff line-up has been unveiled, adding a few more prestigious names to their impressive 2013 program. Toronto has programmed a total of 288 films this year, and they've announced the last batch of titles to top off the announcements previously. They'll be showing the new film from French filmmaker Claire Denis, titled Bastards (or Les salauds) which first screened in Cannes; it's a damn good film, worth seeing. They also have Kim Ki-duk's "twisted family chronicle" Moebius and a "Conversation With... Spike Jonze" where he'll preview some (but not all of) his film Her. Final batch of Tiff 2013 films listed below. Here's the next set of films joining the outstanding Tiff 2013 line-up. Starting with the films in Discovery. Discovery: 1982 (dir. Tommy Oliver, USA) 1982, a film inspired by true events at the onset of the crack epidemic in Philadelphia, tells the story of a father and his efforts to...

The Toronto International Film Festival unveiled its "Discovery" section selections this morning, and, on the list, you'll find 2 or 3 we've been following for the last 12 months or so, while still in production, including, notably Tommy Oliver's feature film debut, 1982. The drama is based on a true story that revolves around a black father whose wife suffers from a crack cocaine addiction, and his efforts to protect his 10-year old daughter from having to experience life as the child of a drug addicted mother, while also trying to help her (the mother/his wife) become clean again. The story is set in 1982 (hence the title) in Philadelphia, at the very onset of the...

In the last wave of Tiff announcements, it’s the Discovery section that we’re most curious about as it normally is loaded up with the rookies, many first-time and second time filmmakers breaking into world film festival circuit programming with genuine gems. Among the 25 plus selected films that make up the programme, we’ve got a handful of U.S. independent films in the likes of Mark Phinney’s Fat, a pair of Us in Progress Paris projects in Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly’s Beneath The Harvest Sky and Tommy Oliver’s 1982, while a newbie filmmaker part of the clan in Gia Coppola makes the trip from Venice Film Festival’s Horizon section to Toronto with the book to film adapation of James Franco Palo Alto (see pic above). Also from Venice, we have the Venice Days included Bethlehem, from Israeli helmer Yuval Adler and an item that...

Papercutz has revealed that they will be launching an all-new line of Mighty Morphin Power rangers graphic novels from writer Stefan Petrucha and artist Ph Marcondes! The upcoming venture will be the first time that a line of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers books have been developed since Marvel and Hamilton released their respective miniseries back in 1995.
Described as a companion piece to Saban’s 1993-1995 television series, the new line of books will launch in 2014 and will take place very early on in the show’s canon – before Green/White Ranger Tommy Oliver made his first appearance. Fans can rest assured that Rita Repulsa will be returning to the series as well an all-new and yet-to-be-revealed villain.
Writer Stefan Petrucha had the following to say when talking about the canon of the upcoming series.
“Will all of the volumes take place within the events of the original TV series? Maybe.

Most of you will know this, but don’t-call-me-Sir Ridley Scott is returning to the career-making universe of Alien this week – with the worldwide release of Prometheus (our review Here and heavy, spoilerific analysis Here). It feels fitting at this point to have a retrospective on the cigar chomping auteur. In a legacy that spans 35 years, 20 directorial feature films and countless production credits, Scott has demonstrated a raw and animalistic fervor for filmmaking: and he shows no signs of slowing down!

Will Eisner's graphic novel "A Contract With God" is being adapted into a live-action feature by writer-producer Darren Dean.
"God" recounts Eisner's memories of growing up in a New York City tenement, and four directors, who will each helm one chapter of the tale, have lined up to bring it to the screen.
The quartet consists of Alex Rivera ("Sleep Dealer"), Tze Chun ("Children of Invention"), Barry Jenkins ("Medicine for Melancholy") and Sean Baker ("Prince of Broadway").
Dean -- who also co-wrote and produced "Prince of Broadway," which will be released by Elephant Eye Films in the fall -- will produce the adaptation under the auspices of the Eisner estate. Bob Schreck and Michael Ruggiero will serve as co-executive producers, with Tommy Oliver as co-producer and Mark Rabinowitz as associate producer.
The project was announced at Comic-Con at the 22nd annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, honoring achievement in American comic books.
