In the new Hulu comedy-drama “Quiz Lady,” the shy Anne (Awkwafina) has found solace since childhood from her irresponsible mother, Mia father and her boring job watching a “Jeopardy”-esque game show every weeknight. And she even envisions the host (Will Ferrell) as a father figure. Though game show fans don’t usually have such high drama in their lives, most of the contestants on “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” are literally lifelong aficionados. But not every quiz or game show is a “Jeopardy!” “Wheel of Fortune” or even a “Family Feud.”
There have been a lot of quiz and game show series that were offbeat, short-lived or downright hideous, like CBS’ “You’re in the Picture,” which premiered Jan. 20, 1961, the same night as President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration. The show was hosted by none other than Jackie Gleason, who was one of the biggest stars on the Tiffany...

Emmy Award-winning gameshow host Bob Barker, who spent five decades associated with “The Price Is Right” and “Truth or Consequences,” has died. He was 99.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce that the World’s Greatest Mc who ever lived, Bob Barker has left us,” Barker’s publicist Roger Neal said in a statement on Saturday.
Barker was cited in the Guinness Book of World Records for his consecutive appearances hosting gameshows and doling out hundreds of millions of dollars in cash and prizes over the years before Alex Trebek surpassed him. Barker hosted “The Price Is Right,” the longest-running gameshow in TV history, for 35 years, retiring in June 2007.
In “The Price Is Right,” enthusiastic contestants are invited by the deep-voiced announcer to “Come on down” and play mini-games based on guessing the cost of merchandise.
Barker was a strong advocate for animal rights, and donated millions of dollars to animal neutering programs.

A danish police woman, intuitively impressive cop, tough as bricks in a world populated by doubting men, compromised personal life - sound familiar?
For those missing their dose of Danish TV crime on Saturday nights, fear not, there's a new box set out just for you.
Unit One - an elite team travelling around Denmark solving some of the country's most heinous crimes
While distributors Nordic Noir could be forgiven for scraping the barrel in their attempts to feed their ever-hungry British audience with whatever subtitled murder they can get their hands on, the good news is that 'Unit One' is a cracking series, with all the ingredients we've come to expect from our Danish counterparts (And the bonus ball of Casino Royale villain Mads Mikkelsen in a lead role).

The internet is a gigantic and horny place, so it hardly surprises me whenever I stumble upon some steamy, man-on-man fanfic starring two or more of my favorite TV characters: Kirk and Spock, Skipper and Gilligan, the entire A-Team, Bob Barker and Johnny Olson.you name it, I've bookmarked it. But until today, I'd never once experienced a homoerotic encounter between lonely widower Danny Tanner and his brother-in-law, Jesse... More >>...

During television's infancy, it didn't take much to keep viewers entertained—especially if those viewers were children themselves. The four-disc DVD set Hiya, Kids!!: A '50s Saturday Morning collects episodes from 22 different '50s TV series, from legendary shows like Time For Beany and Sky King to long-forgotten regional hits like Ding Dong School and The Magic Clown. The episodes are between 15 and 30 minutes long, in kinescoped black and white, and about as thrilling to watch as a test pattern. But even test patterns can hold some fascination when viewed from the right angle. Fans of vintage TV personalities will enjoy seeing scandal-plagued game-show icon Jack Barry hosting the "kids say the darndest things" forum Juvenile Jury, and Price Is Right announcer Johnny Olson hosting Kids And Company. Those who like picking through old TV shows for quaint racism should pay special attention to The Pinky Lee Show.

After years of speculation, Bob Barker, the venerable host of CBS' Price is Right, has announced his retirement. Bob will be 83 in December of this year and says he wants "to retire while I'm still young."
Bob Barker started his national television career in 1956 as the host of the popular Truth or Consequences after many years in local television and radio markets. Bob became the host of The Price is Right in the Fall of 1972 and has been with the show ever since -- outlasting games, "Barker's Beauties" and two announcing legends, both Johnny Olson and Rod Roddy.
Bob's been considering retirement for at least ten years but says he was just having too much fun to give it up. But, now that he's reached a pair of impressive milestones (35 years on The Price Is Right and 50 years on national television), Bob feels the time is right to hang up the mic.
