Kevin Lewis is the director of “Willys Wonderland” starring Nicolas Cage as The Janitor, which is available today on VOD.
Who is The Janitor? Is he a quiet drifter who stumbles upon a band of murderous, satanic-possessed animatronics? Yes. Is he Nicolas Cage, who is not only one of the most amazing actors, but a wonderful partner to make a movie with? Absolutely yes. Is he G.O. Parsons, who wrote a wholly original script? 100 percent yes. Is he Jeremy Daniel Davis, who worked tirelessly every day for years to see “Willy’s Wonderland” finally get to the finish line? A resounding yes.
Is he the producers who pushed relentlessly hard to see this movie get made? No doubt yes. Is he Emoi, who not only gave Willy a voice that wasn’t written on the page, but also composed a pulse-pounding soundtrack that is the heart and soul of “Willy’s Wonderland?...

Gloria doesn't believe cannibalism exists, but that notion is ripped to shreds when she and her companions are targeted as meals for a rain forest tribe that's been pushed over the edge. Serving as an inspiration for Eli Roth's The Green Inferno and still leaving viewers feeling queasy nearly 34 years after its initial release, Umberto Lenzi's 1981 Italian exploitation horror film, Cannibal Ferox, was once banned in 31 countries but has received more love over the years as more and more people have discovered its palpable practical effects and uncompromising storytelling.
Having released Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust on Blu-ray this past summer, the folks at Grindhouse Releasing are bringing Cannibal Ferox to Blu-ray with a new 2k transfer and a slew of special features, including never-before-seen deleted scenes, an abundance of cast and crew interviews, audio commentary by director Umberto Lenzi and star John Morghen, a new feature-length documentary on Italian cannibal cinema,...

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

The sound category this awards season is highlighted by different war zones ("Fury," "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," "Godzilla"), a gut-wrenching space adventure ("Interstellar"), and a bizarre fairy tale musical mash-up ("Into the Woods"). What they have in common is a sense of the natural and a sonic intensity. 1. The sound of World War II tank warfare has never been as real or as intense as in David Ayer's "Fury." Sound designer Paul Ottosson ("Zero Dark Thirty") was totally in his element, recording sounds of the Nazi Tiger tank for the first time onscreen and getting the low-end of the shockwaves as well as the ricochets and shell hits just right. But the recording details extended to the interior machinery of the tanks and the authentic radio transmissions. Yet the sound designer was amazed at the high-tech Tiger -- it was almost like a tricked out sports car.

Normally, by mid-November, we have a pretty good idea of many of the likely nominees in most of the crafts categories. But in this year's race for Best Sound Mixing, I see things as extremely open — there's not a single film that strikes me as assured of a spot and more than a dozen appear to have very good chances. That makes for an exciting race. This category awards the overall mix of dialogue, music, effects and "everything else" into a film's soundtrack. This is different than sound editing, which recognizes the creation and editing of artificial sound effects. Being a leading Best Picture contender can certainly help a film's chances in mixing (seen in "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Moneyball" in recent years), as can being a war film, a musical or a respected (or even not-so-respected) blockbuster. There are also certain mixers who score very regularly indeed.

In Lucio Fulci’s 1981 horror movie, The Beyond, Liza Merril thought she could fix up her inherited hotel and re-open it, but as fans of the film know, Liza’s place of business serves as one of the Seven Doors of Death, a portal to hell that no amount of new paint or improved plumbing can fix. Grindhouse Releasing revealed today the official release date of their 3-disc restored Blu-ray of The Beyond.
Grindhouse Releasing’s The Beyond Blu-ray is scheduled to come out on February 10th and will be available to pre-order later this week. Directed by Lucio Fulci off a screenplay he wrote with Dardano Sacchetti and Giorgio Mariuzzo, The Beyond stars Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Cinzia Monreale, and Veronica Lazar.

Cling. Clang. Crash. Welcome to the category of Best Sound Editing, which awards the creation and integration of artificial sounds into a movie's soundtrack. This distinguishes this category from Best Sound Mixing, which awards the mixing of the film's overall soundtrack. Due to the emphasis on creating artificial sounds, action films and war films tend to do particularly well here. The branch is also not afraid to give a film a standalone nomination (this decade, that has included "All is Lost," "Tron: Legacy," "Drive" and "Unstoppable"). In the not-too-distant past, animated films were also practically annual staples, which is unsurprising given the need to manifest everything you hear in such productions. The sound branch has its favorite contenders who regularly return. Names like Richard Hymns and Wylie Stateman immediately jump to mind. This is likely the case to a greater extent in Sound Editing than Sound Mixing. But every year also sees new nominees.

David Ayer took a big leap with "Fury." After smaller projects like "Street Kings" and "End of Watch" (as well as the critical dud "Sabotage"), he went right at the bull with a massive World War II drama featuring one of the world's biggest stars. Over budget and bursting at the seems, the resulting film is a fascinating shaggy dog entry in the well-worn genre of war, one with a lot of ideas flying around but a central intention: exploring a family dynamic in the middle of hell itself. I spoke to Ayer last week about the film, which was shot on location outside of London last year. We got into the choice of shooting on film, fighting to keep one particularly strong scene in tact and, of course, favorite war movies. Check out the back and forth below. "Fury" hits theaters Oct. 17. *** HitFix: So there is obviously a long...

We don't know if you've heard, but something went down last night. Something happened in Hollywood, something the world saw and won't stop talking about.
Yeah, we're talking about Jennifer Lawrence falling down the 2013 Oscars. (Well, and J-Law's tumble, but we'll get to that.)
Since this is NextMovie and we're not really the type to come at things head-on, we knew that we wanted to recap the Oscars, but how? The only way we know: With a game of Eff, Marry, Kill.
This isn't a hot-or-not, more of a thoughful, mature look at the night that was. (Cough.) Our trusty FMKers ranked the three surprises from the night that shocked us most — Ang Lee's win for Best Director in a wide-open field, "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Skyfall" tying for Best Sound Editing, and, of course, Jennifer Lawrence falling ass-over-Dior on her way up to accept her Best Actress statue — and Dtr.

The key acceptance speech of the evening came from Ben Affleck, as part of the producing team behind the best picture winner Argo. A man on a mission, for sure: he had been, bizarrely, shut out from the best director category, and in any case was on a very, very long road back from the humiliation of Gigli and the whole Bennifer thing. He proceeded, very quickly, to get very tired and emotional. If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

In one of the most unique Oscar races to come down the pike in quite a while, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Argo won the Academy Award for best motion picture of the year during the live ABC telecast of the Oscars from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Sunday night. Actor Jack Nicholson and First Lady Michelle Obama (via satellite) presented producers Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck and George Clooney the statue.
Of the win, director Ben Affleck said backstage, “ I was excited about making the movie. These guys had a script, I really liked it, I called them up, and asked will you put me on the movie? And I wanted to do the movie and I wanted to work with them. That’s what I thought would happen. I wanted to work on some quality. I did the movie, we all worked really hard, I hoped that people would like it.

On Sunday night, something unusual happened at the 85th Annual Academy Awards -- there was a tie.
The Oscars tie had two winners for Best Sound Editing -- "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Skyfall."
Although it is rare, Oscars ties have happened before.
In 1932, Frederic March won the Best Actor award for "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and tied with Wallace Beery for "The Champ" because Beery only beat him by one single vote, Slate notes. The rules allowed for a one-vote difference to be called a tie back then, but today it must be the exact same.
The Best Documentary Short award had a tie in 1949, according to ABC News. That category also had a tie in 1986.
"Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life" and "Trevor" tied for Best Short Film (Live Action) in 1995, Moviefone notes.

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.
Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.
For the most part, MacFarlane was reserved, though a few barbs did land before the end of the night. He played his part also in the excellent musical staging throughout the ceremony, whose highlights featured Shirley Bassey,...

Most Oscars fashion talk revolves around dresses and tuxes and jewels and shoes and who wore it best and cleavage and manicures and sequins. But the biggest trend so far seems to be flowing locks on men. Which of tonight's Oscar winners sported the most luxurious mane? Was it Life of Pi's cinematographer Claudio Miranda? Zero Dark Thirty sound editor Paul N.J. Ottosson? Or Skyfall sound editor Per Hallberg (who won with Karen Baker Landers)? Just like the sound editing category itself, it's a tie. Congratulations, sirs!

When it comes to the Oscars, there are surprises -- and then there are big surprises. A tie in the sound editing category, only the sixth in Academy Awards history, certainly qualified as the latter. It was so unexpected, in fact, that Mark Wahlberg, who announced the winners, had to add, "No B.S.," so the audience wouldn't think it was yet another prepared bit. Oscars 2013: Winners List The winners were Paul N.J. Ottosson for Zero Dark Thirty, and Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers for Skyfall. Shortly after accepting his Oscar, Ottosson told reporters backstage that

At this year's Academy Awards, there was a tie (gasp!). It was in the Best Sound Editing category, with the award going to Paul N.J. Ottosson for his work in "Zero Dark Thirty," and Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers for their work in "Skyfall." However, this wasn't the first time a tie happened at the Oscars. Back in 1969, both Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand won in a much more publicized category -- Best Actress -- with Hepburn winning for her performance as Queen Eleanor in "The Lion in Winter," and Streisand as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl." It also happened in 1932, with both Wallace Beery ("The Champ") and Frederic March ("Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde") winning Best Actor; in 1949, when "A Chance to Live" and "So Much for So Little" won the Best Documentary Short award; in 1986, with "Artie Shaw: Time Is All You've Got" and "Down and Out in America...
