New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features one random pick as well as four selections reflecting the month of May 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a self-loathing serial killer, a violinist’s murderous ghost, and a postmodern vamp flick.
Scream, Pretty Peggy (1973)
Pictured: Ted Bessell and Sian Barbara Allen in Scream, Pretty Peggy.
Directed by Gordon Hessler.
The TV-movie Scream, Pretty Peggy first aired as part of ABC Movie of the Week. Bette Davis plays the mother of a reclusive sculptor (Ted Bessell), and after the previous housekeeper goes missing, a local college student (Sian Barbara Allen) fills the position. Blackpink's hotly anticipated sophomore album, "Born Pink," is here. Two years after going on hiatus in 2020, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa are back with a tight eight-song offering that shows off everything the group do best - while still leaving a lot of room for evolution.
Duality is written into Blackpink's name, and they stay true to that theme on "Born Pink," which dropped on Sept. 16. The album showcases each member of the group's undeniable self-confidence while switching between tenderness and ferocity. They hold nothing back on the opener, their lead single, "Pink Venom," a song that celebrates their undeniable star power. They maintain the opener's electric intensity on their second single, "Shut Down," a midtempo, hip-hop-influenced song about proving haters completely wrong, and on "Typa Girl," a heavier electronic offering that leans hard into the band's girl-boss energy.

Blackpink are the world’s biggest K-pop girl group, the essence of swagger in human form: a four-woman swirl of glam energy. Jisoo, Rosé, Lisa, and Jennie have blown up into a global pop sensation, even invading America—without the slightest hint of watering down what they do. Their hotly awaited new Born Pink is Blackpink’s first album since their 2020 debut, The Album, and like The Album it’s short and sweet: 8 songs, nearly all exactly 3 minutes, nearly all bristling with brassy uptempo confidence. Even when they’re they’re lovesick girls,...

Leon Redbone, the singer who built a career out of performing ragtime, vaudeville and American standards with a sly wink and an unmistakable, nasally voice, died Thursday. He was 69.
A statement on Redbone’s website confirmed his death, though it did so with a sweet bit of humor and joking that he was actually 127 years old.
“He departed our world with his guitar, his trusty companion Rover and a simple tip of his hat,” his family said in a statement. “He’s interested to see what Blind Blake, Emmett and...

A hilariously histrionic depiction of 19th-century superstar violinist Niccolò Paganini’s rise to fame, far more Monty Python than Mozart. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Superstar violinist David Garrett had better keep his day job. Even as real-life 19th-century superstar violinist Niccolò Paganini, Garrett has badly overstretched his, ahem, minimalistic acting talent; I am being overly generous when I say that his vacant stare would have a plank of plywood laughing with derision at his impersonation of it. Paganini is supposed to be a capricious genius who is utterly irresistible to the ladies, but writer-director Bernard Rose (Sx_Tape) manages only the most hilariously histrionic depiction of Paganini’s rise to fame: it’s far more Monty Python than Mozart. Nineteenth-century Italian violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini was rumored to have made a Faustian pact in order to play like the devil, though the flexibility that enabled him to cover three octaves across four strings with one hand was more likely a side effect of a genetic connective-tissue disorder. Bernard Rose's elegantly staged but tonally flat biopic embraces the myth, even underscoring Paganini's rising fame, scandalous hedonism, and womanizing as an anachronistic form of rock-star fantasy. (It's like a humorless take on Ken Russell's Lisztomania, and who wants that?) Unlike the writer-director's 1994 success Immortal Beloved — owned by Gary Oldman's chameleonic transformation as Beethoven — Rose's cult-of-personality approach here suffers...

I know nothing about Kinski Paganini other than it was the last film role for Klaus Kinski, but the cover art alone peaked my interest.
The DVD will be released on November 8, 2011.
Witness the life and times of madman and genius violinist Niccolò Paganini. Haunted by the demons of lust and beauty, Paganini pursues his ideal of artistic creation while challenging the moral boundaries of his era. Ridiculed and feared, suspected to be a devil worshipper and still envied for his miraculous musical skills, Paganini created some of the most complex and astonishing music ever. And yet, for all his visionary art, the master of demonic violin playing was considered no more than a freak to be pitied. But his genius still lives today. Just as strong as Klaus Kinski’s final masterpiece.
