“Shadow and Bone” Season 2 expands an already complex universe by taking on more source material from Leigh Bardugo’s books, unfurling the fictional fantasy map to explore countries in the Grishaverse and four completely new characters. And in an exclusive new behind-the-scenes featurette, costume designer Wendy Partridge explains how the season’s costumes helped tell the story.
Ben Barnes, Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux and the original Crows Freddy Carter, Kit Young and Amita Suman return alongside brand new characters. Both new and returning characters continue to shed layers of identity as the story develops, and these characters’ costumes reflected subtle shifts in their roles as well for Season 2.
As for where the show is headed, some of the characters’ costumes hint at that as well. Costume Designer Wendy Partridge kicked off the season by coordinating colors between Alina and Mal as they became more open about their affection for each other.

Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone” arrived on TV this spring just in time to fill the “Game of Thrones”-sized void in the fantasy adventure series genre of late and nabbed the numbers to prove it.
Adapted from Leigh Bandugo’s novel series, the first of which shares the same title, the series is a timely, apt parable of the Grisha, a blessed people afforded special powers, as they assert themselves into a warring society that often has designs on harming or destroying them, particularly in the case of Alina (Jessie Mei Li), a mapmaker who discovers she is a Sun Summoner, with the rare ability to control light.
So how do you create costumes for a show with no set parameters on history’s timeline, as seen in the convention-bending series? “The main body of the show has an 1870s, Russian-Prussian influence, but we didn’t want to make it a period show,...

In the period fantasy world of Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone,” adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling book series, the country of Ravka is riven by a massive storm called the Fold, a blackened no man’s land populated by violent creatures called volcra. In the series premiere, two lowly members of the First Army — devoted friends Alina (Jessie Mei Li) and Mal (Archie Renaux) — venture inside the Fold on a skiff crewed by a team of Grisha, members of the Second Army who sport colorful tunics called keftas and possess supernatural powers (including shooting fire or controlling wind). While inside the otherworldly domain, the skiff is violently attacked by volcra, and just when all seems lost, Alina’s body radiates powerful light, revealing her to be the Sun Summoner — the Grisha who could finally bring an end to the Fold forever.

When Emmy-winning visual effects artist Ted Rae discussed Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone” with show creator Eric Heisserer and the source material’s author, Leigh Bardugo, Rae said he had no plans to read Bardugo’s series of books just yet.
“I wanted to react a bit more like a regular audience member; to what I knew from the script not what I knew from the books,” Rae says in a recent chat with Gold Derby. “I didn’t want to know things that the audience wouldn’t know. I was hoping that by taking that approach, it would help me present things visually in a way the audience will more quickly understand — because the majority of the audience is not going to have read the books.”
But what Rae discovered was that despite his approach, the “Shadow and Bone” readers were bowled over by the visual effects.

Before costume designer Wendy Partridge met with “Shadow and Bone” creator Eric Heisserer about his Netflix series, she was unfamiliar with author Leigh Bardugo’s beloved fantasy series. But that quickly changed once she got hired, and Partridge says she found the source books enlightening because of how detailed Bardugo was in explaining the various costumes worn by the many characters.
“Leigh has brought so much texture about the clothing — particularly the keftas — in her books, that it was a wonderful jumping off point and really exciting to be involved in this amazing world that she created in her brain and allowed us to create it visually,” Partridge says in a new interview with Gold Derby.

Whether you have a good time with Pompeii depends entirely on what you demand from it. This historical disaster epic is loaded with CGI destructo-porn and thrilling action sequences, but falls almost unbelievably short in the heart department. For many audience members, that will be perfectly acceptable.
Anderson wasn’t aiming to make a profound, historically accurate meditation on the titular Roman city. Rather, his intentions for Pompeii should be obvious from the poster alone, which depicts gladiator Milo (Kit Harington) romancing noblewoman Cassia (Emily Browning) as Mount Vesuvius lays waste to everything around them. The idea of a film combining Titanic‘s doomed romance and Gladiator‘s furious action is what sold this film to the studios and then to audiences back in February. Still, what a shame, then, that Pompeii can’t even begin to hold a candle to either of those inspirations.
That’s not to say that it’s all bad.

In Paul W.S. Anderson's new historical disaster epic, "Pompeii," Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays Atticus, an African gladiator who needs one more victory in the Roman arena to obtain his freedom. To win that, he must face Milo (Kit Harington), a captured Celt and formidable fighter who thirsts for vengeance against the Romans who murdered his people. The relationship between Atticus and Milo, against the looming catastrophe of the erupting Mount Vesuvius, evolves from enemies to comrades to heroes, an arc that Akinnuoye-Agbaje handles elegantly.
Since launching his acting career in 1994, the London-born Akinnuoye-Agbaje has piled up a steady stream of credits that include films like "The Mummy Returns," "The Bourne Identity," "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and more recently, "Thor: The Dark World." But the actor may be best known to American audiences for two TV roles: as Simon Adebisi for three years on the HBO prison drama "Oz" and as Mr.

Here’s some unexpected news, readers. Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell and Deborah Kara Unger will all be returning for ghoulish goings-on in Silent Hill: Revelation. That’s right, they’re back for the sequel! It’s in production right now and along with the press release there’s a new image to gawp at.
Funny because I was just thinking the other day ‘what’s Radha Mitchell up to these days?’ Now I know. Michael J. Bassett will write and direct and Christophe Gans will not be returning to shout “le action!” Yeah, he’s French.

Three of the key stars of the original 2006 "Silent Hill" film adaptation - Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell and Deborah Kara Unger, are all set to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D".
In a press release from Davis Films today, the trio was confirmed to be starring alongside newcomers Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington in the film which follows Heather Mason, a young girl on the eve of her 18th birthday who is plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father.
When she discovers she's not who she thinks she is, the revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.
The Michael Bassett-directed production will utilise 3D Red Epic cameras which are described as "lighter, smaller and more flexible" than others of its type. Also joining the crew is cinematographer Maxime Alexandre ("The Crazies,...

Last week we learned that the sequel to Silent Hill had begun filming and that Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington were set to star in the film. What we hadn’t heard was wether or not this film would be connected to the original in any way. Now we know. A press release went out to day confirming the stars of the first film will reprise their roles in Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. That’s right, Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger will all be coming back for the sequel. This may come as a surprise to some of you, as it does to me. The ending to the first film was a bit ambiguous, but now it’s obvious Mitchell survived her ordeal in the haunted town, which will now wreak havoc on Clemens and Harington.
