“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie” and “The Holdovers” were among the film winners at the 39th annual Casting Society Artios Awards.
The ceremony honors top casting in the year’s films, TV and theater. The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

Too often, we define marginalized groups as targets of oppression or as social justice fighters, but rarely as just regular people who wake up every day, pee, go to work and have sex like the rest of the world. Director Richard Wong attempts to offer this more humanized narrative that centers on disabled characters in his surprisingly tender new comedy, “Come As You Are.”
But in doing so, he provokes a similarly important thought: Why are all the leads played by able-bodied actors?
Inspired by Asta Philpot’s real-life journey, “Come As You Are” is an intriguing rom-com slash coming-of-age tale along the lines of “American Pie,” except told through the perspective of three disabled young men with dreams of escaping their fiercely guarded lives and getting laid. The abrasive Scotty, who uses a wheelchair, lives with his mother and caregiver, Liz (Janeane Garofalo), who is tethered to him so...

Here’s how to get cast in Disney’s next “High School Musical” installment, an exciting new fantasy series, a commercial, and a PSA! “High School Musical 4”As we reported last week, Disney’s musical hit for teens, “High School Musical,” is getting a reboot with a fourth feature-length installment—and they’re holding open calls! Auditions hit Chicago, Illinois March 17–19. Casting director Mickie Paskal of Paskal Rudnicke Casting, Inc. is seeking boys and girls of all ethnicities ages 13–21. The casting notice reveals that “acting is the most important skill before singing or dancing ability.” “The Outpost”This new medieval fantasy series from Arrowstorm Entertainment and producer Jennifer Griffin is seeking submissions for six roles, including two leads: Talon, a hardened and orphaned 18-year-old girl, and Garret, a 30-something and army Captain of the Guard. “The Outpost” is slated to shoot for three months beginning September 2016 in Utah. Chicago actors have another reason to go home. The Windy City, which has long had a thriving theater community, is now hosting a growing number of TV series. And these productions aren’t just looking for local day players. “It’s been an explosion,” said Mickie Paskal, who, together with her partner Jennifer Rudnicke, cast Showtime’s “Shameless,” among several other series. Recently, series ranging from USA’s “Sirens” to ABC’s “Mind Games” to NBC’s “Chicago P.D.,” “Chicago Fire,” and “Crisis,” have set up production in the city. “It’s not been unusual to have one or two series shooting here at a time, but to have this number is fantastic,” said Paskal. The rush is being driven by three factors, casting directors told Backstage: the Cinespace complex, which is a 1.2-million-square-foot soundstage (one of the largest outside of Hollywood); a generous, 30 percent tax credit, which doesn...

In The Mole Man of Belmont Avenue (which has to be one of the catchier names on the indie horror scene these days), we meet down on their luck brothers Jarman (Laflamboy) and Marion (Bradecich). Just back from a failed stint raising llamas, Jarman has just returned to the rapidly depopulating Chicago building managed by deadpan brother Marion who's got his own struggles to contend with.
See, the gas has just been shut off in the building and Marion's been left to deal with the fact that their building's electricity is being stolen from a church next door. The only tenants that remain are a generally disagreeable bunch including a couple of cranky oldsters (including horror icon Robert Englund), a prostitute and an apartment full of stoners.
As if all of that wasn't enough to deal with, the brothers suddenly realize that all the pets in the building are disappearing...
