Announcing the nominees for their 16th annual Ves Awards, the Visual Effects Society brought welcome news for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” and Matt Reeves’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” each up for seven statuettes. “Despicable Me 3” is the most-nominated animated film of the year (5), while the most-honored title overall is “Game of Thrones” (11).
The 21-year-old organization consists of 3,400-plus members in 35 nations. Each year, it recognizes visual effects innovators in film, animation, television, commercials, and video games.
In 2017, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” remake claimed five Ves trophies, more than any other feature (nominations leader “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was shutout). It’s director-producer, Jon Favreau, will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Weta Digital director and four-time Oscar winner Joe Letteri will accept the Georges Méliès Award, named for the late French illusionist and filmmaker. How do you delete anything that Pixar made from your movie? It seems like Brad Bird does.
Movies.com unveiled on Tuesday that the animation studio created a short scene for the latest Disney film, Tomorrowland, which would show the origins of the fabled land built by Plus Ultra.
According to the site, the scene functions as a backstory prequel laying out some alternate history informing the plot of the feature, which is inspired by the same-named section of Disney’s theme parks. Here we learn that Jules Verne, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla and Gustave Eiffel came together as a kind of 19th century Avengers called Plus Ultra, only they were “dedicated to the cultivation of mankind’s greatest resource, imagination” instead of saving the world from aliens and evil robots.
While speaking with Business Insider, Eddie Pasquarello, the co-visual effects supervisor on Tomorrowland, said that the scene just wouldn...

Brad Bird's "Tomorrowland" certainly isn't short on ambition. It's a blockbuster that celebrates innovators and thinkers like Edison, Tesla and Einstein, and in an early draft, even featured a cameo of sorts by Stanley Kubrick. And that's not all. It turns out Pixar crafted an animated sequence for the movie that was left on the cutting room floor, but thanks to the era of the internet, you can now view it online. “It was pitched as a ride under a ride," the film's co-visual effects supervisor Eddie Pasquarello told Business Insider about where the three-minute scene would've appeared. "When Frank drops below the ‘It’s A Small World’ ride instead of going right to the portal to Tomorrowland he would have taken this ride first, like a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' boat ride. Moving set pieces, mist curtains, it would have been literally riding a classic Disney ride and...

The Academy has picked fifteen films for the Visual Effects category. Out of the fifteen, ten will be chosen in early January, then five for the final nominations to be announced January 25.
If we're going to predict which films will be included in the final five, we're thinking "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," "Hugo," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" (because for some reason, the Academy loves honoring "Transformers" in this category -- big, clashing eye candy!), and the critics-darling "The Tree of Life."
We'll find out January 25th if our Oscar crystal ball is accurate. For now, here are the 15 films vying for nominations (in alphabetical order):
"Captain America: The First Avenger" (Marvel/Paramount) Marvel VFX supervisor: Christopher Townsend
"Cowboys & Aliens" (DreamWorks/Universal) Ilm VFX supervisors: Roger Guyett and Eddie Pasquarello
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" (Warner Bros.
