When Air Force One Down begins, Allison Miles has already made a name for herself as one of the first female Marines to qualify for special operations. That has impressed Uncle Sam, both the US government and her actual Uncle Sam, to offer her a job with the Secret Service, something she’s happy to accept.
And she’s going to get thrown in the deep end at her new job as on her first day, one of the agents on the President’s detail calls in sick. He’s one of several federal employees to suddenly come down with a bad case of lead poisoning. Sam drafts her to replace him, working with him to protect President Edwards, whom she is not a fan of, on his...

It’s quiet for specialty openings after the holidays, in the thick of awards season. But one film needed this weekend — Abramorama documentary A Storm Foretold by Danish director Christoffer Guldbrandsen about the Maga movement and the Jan. 6 insurrection. The filmmaker captured footage over years of on-and-off access to Roger Stone.
It’s booked for over 20 rolling playdates in the next two weeks so far including the Quad Cinema in New York where Guldbrandsen will be holding Q&As all weekend.
Stone was former president Donald Trump’s closest political confidante and the film spans several years through Jan. 6, 2021. As Congress gathered that day to approve the election and declare Joe Biden the winner, less than a mile away, Donald Trump was urging a crowd to march towards the Capitol. Hours later, five people were killed and 141 wounded. With Stone as its central character, A Storm Foretold sees the storming...

The vampire universe you are imagining is certainly different from the universe of this film. What are the rules generally? Vampires are hidden creatures, the ‘undead’, and can’t bear too much sunlight. Well, in V for Vengeance, debutant director Kelly Halihan brings an updated version of the legend of the vampire. Some aspects remain untouched, and I must add that they are kept the same for good reason. The film begins on a very familiar note, and we get to feel what kind of film it’s going to be. But within the frame of reference of the slick action thriller, writers Steven Paul and Peter Moore Smith infuse the characters with likable traits and put them in absurd yet exciting situations. The result is that this story, about three stepsisters, becomes a vampire-ridden revenge tale.

Get on the phone with Ron Bernstein and he’ll happily share his views on who’s up and down at the studios — and inevitably, he’ll talk about his latest deals. On a recent call, he hyped the Redstone family power saga by James Stewart and Rachel Abrams, “Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Hollywood Media Empire”; sure enough, within weeks it sold to producer Steven Paul, who’s developing the juicy Shakespearean drama for television.
Bernstein is Hollywood’s most respected media rights agent. He’s repped the source material for the Coen brothers’ Best Picture winner “No Country for Old Men” (Cormac McCarthy), Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (Doris Kearns Goodwin), Danny Boyle’s “Jobs” (Walter Isaacson), and Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell” (Marie Brenner).
Now, he has a new job. After a 23-year run at ICM, which CAA bought in 2022, Bernstein recently joined the Agency for the...

Producer Steven Paul has optioned the rights to “Unscripted: The Epic Battle for a Media Empire and the Redstone Family Legacy,” with plans to develop the nonfiction bestseller by James B. Stewart and Rachel Abrams as a TV series.
The book, published by Penguin Random House in February, tells the sordid, behind-the-scenes story of the battle for control of Sumner Redstone’s media empire. The book has been the talk of the town in Hollywood as industry insiders learn the unvarnished details behind the recent history of Sumner and Shari Redstone, Viacom, CBS Corp., Leslie Moonves and a host of other prominent figures.
Rachel Abrams, Steven Paul and James B. Stewart
Paul is in the process of recruiting a writer to develop the property as a limited series through his Sp Media Group. The deal was brokered for Stewart and Abrams by CAA’s Ron Bernstein and Sp Media president Scott Karol.

How is it that this new live-action Ghost in the Shell has more dialogue than the anime it’s remaking but says so much less? How is it that this 2017 film’s CGI, conjured out of a hundred-million-dollar budget and presented in 3D, is so much less convincing and immersive than digital / cell animation from 1995? Why would a filmmaker, having acquired Takeshi Kitano for their movie, give him nothing to work with beyond dry-heaving exposition? This iteration of Ghost in the Shell remixes elements from the various comics, films, and TV series that have come before, but offers nothing new or interesting in doing so.
As in all versions of the story, this Ghost in the Shell follows the Major (Scarlett Johansson), a woman with a completely cybernetic body who leads the anti-terrorism unit Section 9 in a future setting wherein robotic enhancements of human bodies are commonplace. Of course, the...

Scarlett Johansson’s new film “Ghost in the Shell,” based on the popular manga and anime of the same name, has received its fair share of controversy over the past year from critics who argue that casting Johansson as the film’s protagonist is an act of whitewashing. Though people on the film’s creative team have tried to stymie the controversy, it nevertheless persists. Now, according to The Verge, the director Rupert Sanders has come out and defended his choice of casting in an on-stage interview in Tokyo when the film’s first trailer premiered.
“To me, you know, I cast very much from the gut and I think I was very lucky to be able to get an amazing international cast of people that I’ve always really wanted to work with,...

Rupert Sanders’ upcoming live-action take on the beloved anime series “Ghost in the Shell” has repeatedly drawn criticism for its casting of Scarlett Johansson as its lead character, Major Motoko Kusanagi, a super-powered cyborg who is traditionally crafted to appear to be of Asian descent. While many have defended the casting — from producer Steven Paul to, for some reason, Max Landis — fans of the original work and those inspired to combat Hollywood whitewashing remain unconvinced.

Considering the trend of live-action remakes, those behind a Hollywood adaptation of Masamune Shirow‘s iconic Japanese franchise Ghost in the Shell certainly have quite a hill to climb — not to mention how much pre-release talk has surrounded its casting. However, we’re at least vaguely curious as to what director Rupert Sanders has in store and today we get the first look thanks to a set of brief teasers.

Section 9 is suited and booted in a new wave of photos for Paramount’s live-action Ghost in the Shell adaptation.
Casting light on the movie’s diverse cast, these leaked images were first unveiled by anime giant Crunchyroll and find Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi, while Game of Thrones star Pilou Asbæk assumes the role of cybernetic ninja, Batou. What leads us to believe that these pics are the real deal is the fact that the hairstyles of Johansson, Asbæk and their co-stars match up with those glimpsed across previous set photos taken on the streets of Hong Kong. We await confirmation from Paramount nonetheless.
Based on Masamune Shirow’s beloved manga series, it’s no secret that Ghost in the Shell has received a lot of flak for its casting process. Addressing those white-washing claims, producer Steven Paul noted that Paramount’s feature is...

Ghost in the Shell has already come under fire from fans unhappy that the Japanese tale is getting remade with a white lead. So far, the production’s strategy has seemingly to try and downplay the property’s Japanese roots, with producer Steven Paul defending his “international approach” and Scarlett Johansson‘s character simply being called “the Major” (as opposed to Motoko Kusanagi, which […]

A new behind-the-scene photo from the set of Ghost in the Shell has been released giving us another look at Scarlett Johansson as The Major. She is joined by director Rupert Sanders and actor Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws, a.k.a. Tricky hanging out with three anime legends on the set of the film. Those anime legends are Mamoru Oshii, who directed the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell film, Kenji Kamiyama, who directed both seasons of the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime series, and composer Kenji Kawai, who provided the score for the Ghost in the Shell anime films.

Scarlett Johansson may be the highest-grossing actress of all time, but the decision to enlist the Avengers star for Ghost in the Shell caused quite the stir back in April.
That’s because Masamune Shirow’s beloved manga series is viewed as a decidedly Japanese story, leading many to decree that the addition of Johansson was nothing more than whitewashing on Paramount’s part. According to producer Steven Paul, that’s simply not the case, as Ghost in the Shell boasts a “very international story.”
In an interview with BuzzFeed, Paul leapt to the defence of Paramount’s high-profile adaptation, revealing that the studio is “utilizing people from all over the world.”
“I don’t think it was just a Japanese story. ‘Ghost In The Shell’ was a very international story, and it wasn’t just focused on Japanese; it was supposed to be an entire world,” he explained. “That...

Since the announcement of the live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s seminal manga series Ghost In The Shell, fans of the beloved manga series criticized the studio (Paramount and DreamWorks) for whitewashing Major Motoko Kusanagi who is played by Scarlett Johansson.
BuzzFeed recently interviewed producer Steven Paul to discuss Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks' "Ghost In The Shell." The producer talked about how the audience will react once they see the film saying:
“I think everybody is going to end up being really happy with it,” he said. “They’re going to be very, very happy with it when they see what we’ve actually done with it, and I don’t think anybody’s going to be disappointed.”
Fans have remained optimistic since it was revealed that the production cast white actors in place of Asian actors such as actress Scarlett Johansson who is playing the main character in the film.

The upcoming film adaptation of the classic manga "Ghost in the Shell" has come under fire for the whitewashing of its lead character, a Japanese female cyborg character named Major Motoko Kusanagi who in the film version will be played by Scarlett Johansson.
Talking about the project this week, the film's producer Steven Paul has clarified some points of contention about the film with Buzzfeed. First up, he confirms her character will simply be referred to as 'The Major' in the film and that the setting will be in an 'international world' as opposed to the fictional Japanese city of the manga:

By now, you're probably familiar with the controversy surrounding Paramount and DreamWorks' live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, which experienced a huge backlash and accusations of whitewashing the cast after the first photo hit the internet of Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. The continued practice of casting white actors in roles that are meant for Asian actors is bad enough, but there was also a report that the studio conducted CGI tests to see if they could make white actors appear more Asian on screen. Yikes.
Through all of this, the filmmakers remained quiet. But this week, one of the movie's producers, Steven Paul, spoke with Buzzfeed and somehow managed to brush past the issue while claiming fans are going to love the movie:
“I think everybody is going to end up being really happy with it,” he said. “They’re going to be very, very happy with...

“Ghost in the Shell” fans were none too happy when Scarlett Johansson was cast in the lead role of the Japanese-based story, but now a producer on the film is defending the decision. “I don’t think it was just a Japanese story,” Steven Paul told Buzzfeed. “‘Ghost in the Shell’ was a very international story, and it wasn’t just focused on Japanese; it was supposed to be an entire world. That’s why I say the international approach is, I think, the right approach to it.” Johansson will be playing a character known simply as the Major, despite the fact the character.

For those who have not seen The quintessential samurai flick Shogun Assassin, just stop reading now and go watch it. That said, Lone Wolf and Cub was originally a manga about a samurai pushing his son around in a carriage while seeking revenge. It has two things I love - a high body count and spraying blood. It was made into 6 different films in the 1970s and in 1980 the first two of these was re-cut and dubbed in English.. and they made Shogun Assassin for the American market. Wu-Tang member Gza's first album, Liquid Swords, uses cuts from this film.

The age I dreamed of for years finally seems to be coming. Anime and manga fans may finally start seeing a bunch of their favorite series get adapted to the big screen. Right now, Ghost In The Shell is in production, Justin Lin is reportedly being eyed to direct the long-gestating Akira film, and according to new report from Variety, the manga Lone Wolf And Cub's remake and sequel rights have just been acquired by Sp International. This is the same studio that is currently producing the Ghost In The Shell film.
Lone Wolf And Cub is no stranger to adaptations. The 1970s manga, written by Kazuo Koike and drawn by Goseki Kojima, has been adapted into several movies as well as two full TV series in Japan. The property never had a Hollywood adaptation as of yet, but interestingly enough, Justin Lin, who is now being eyed for Akira,...

Lone Wolf And Cub, Koike Kazuo and Goseki Kojima’s stylish Japanese comic book series, is bound for the big screen via Sp International Pictures.
Currently collaborating with Paramount Pictures on a live-action rendition of Ghost in the Shell, studio producer Steven Paul told Variety that Lone Wolf and Cub will sidestep any potential whitewashing controversy by enlisting “an essentially Japanese cast” before making the defining jump into production in early 2017.
Hatched by Kazuo and Kojima-san back in 1970, Lone Wolf and Cub is something of a Japanese phenomenon, spawning numerous feature films, stage plays and even a TV show. In 1992, the Final Conflict movie adaptation told the tale of “a noble samurai [Ittō] plotted against and framed in an assassination conspiracy the samurai disobeys his Shogun’s orders and becomes an assassin for hire with his three-year-old son [Daigorō].”

If you're an ardent chanbara cinema follower, this bit may concern you. Sp International Pictures's own Steven Paul (Ghost Rider (2007), Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance (2011), Tekken (2009), Tekken: Kazuya's Revenge (2014)) is now developing a live-action remake of Inoue Akira's 1993 film, Lone Wolf And Cub: Final Conflict which commences shooting in 2017. The film takes its cues from manga series author Koike Kazuo's 1970 Futabasha publication which ensued in manga follow-ups like "Lone Wolf 2100", as well as a six-part film franchise which led to two compiled U.S. versions, a television series and several stage plays. The epic ronin tale is set in the Tokugawa shogunate era and tells of Ogami Itto, the Shogun's elite enforcer and executioner who journeys the land...

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have released the first photo of Scarlett Johansson as Major in their co-production live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Shooting has started in Wellington, New Zealand, and the press release came with this official synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “Ghost In The Shell” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
I've never read the original manga series or seen the anime feature, so I'm going into this one with very little context. Hopefully director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman) will focus more heavily on the story this time around; I'm still interested in seeing him put his visual skills to good use,...

Though it was previously reported that British actor Sam Riley would be playing this character, according to Variety it’ll actually be Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire, Funny Games) who will bring the villainous Laughing Man to life in director Rupert Sanders’ live-action take on classic manga/anime, Ghost In The Shell.
This Catcher In The Rye-obsessed baddie is described as “the ultimate hacker, capable of such feats as hijacking multiple video streams simultaneously, taking over someone’s cybernetic brain entirely and editing his own images out of someone’s cybernetic eyes, and all in real time.”
He’ll be the chief antagonist to Scarlett Johansson’s “augmented-cybernetic human” leader of the covert Section 9 team, Major Motoko Kusanagi. Danish actor Pilou Asbaek has also siged on as Kusanagi’s second in command, Batou.
Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing this big screen adaptation of Ghost in Shell from a script by Bill Wheeler.

If he signs on he'll join Danish actor Pilou Asbaek as Section 9 second in command and all-round tough Sob, Batou, and Scarlett Johansson as the "augmented-cybernetic human" leader of the covert team, Major Motoko Kusanagi. It was previously reported that British actor Sam Riley would play this role, but evidently he'll be bringing a different baddie to life. The story "follows a female special ops cyborg who leads an elite task force called Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. Section 9 is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology." Avi Arad...
