Premium linear channel and streaming service MGM+ announced today a six-episode limited series order for Earth Abides, an adaptation of George R. Stewart’s classic sci-fi novel of the same name. The series will star Alexander Ludwig as “Ish” and begin production in Vancouver on April 8.
Showrunner Todd Komarnicki (Sully) created the series, which comes from MGM+ Studios and executive producers Kearie Peak and Lighthouse Productions’ Michael Phillips and Juliana Maio. Earth Abides is slated to premiere on MGM+ in late 2024.
When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction.

SEOUL, South Korea -- The 1998 Irish hit Waking Ned Devine is set to be remade as a Chinese-language film. It's all part of a trend -- following many American remakes of Asian films -- of making new local-language versions of western or Asian films for China and other Chinese-speaking markets. Hong Kong- and Beijing-based production and project-packaging outfit International Pacific Arts confirmed Thursday that it has closed a deal for remake rights to Ned Devine on the last day of the Pusan International Film Festival, which wraps today. Earlier this year, IPA, through its production arm Lotus Entertainment, acquired the rights from the producers of the 20th Century Fox-distributed comedy directed by Kirk Jones about a remote Irish village that tries to hide the fact that one of its inhabitants, who wins the national lottery, has died just before the winning number is drawn. "It doesn't matter if it hasn't been released in China, we think the humor and characters in this kind of film will work with (mainland) Chinese audiences," said IPA co-principal Thomas Leong, who with Korean-based partner Jonathan Kim and Los Angeles partner Kearie Peak did the remake deal with ICM's London office.
