Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Mauvais sang is playing April 2 - May 1 and Mr. X, a Vision of Leos Carax April 3 - May 3, 2016 in the United States. When lighting cigarettes, characters in Mauvais sang (1986) never shield the flame from wind. The smoke doesn't dissipate, but slithers away in tendrils. The air hangs, heated by an overpassing Halley's Comet that turns the cobblestone streets into a fire-walk. The male characters conduct their business shirtless, sometimes wrestling with a homoeroticism more Greek than closeted. A city-wide suicide spree, exacerbated but maybe not caused by the AIDS-like retrovirus "Stbo", leaves alive only thieves, fare-hoppers, vandals, gangsters. They inhabit Jean-Pierre Melville's exsanguinated Paris, designed as a hermetic MGM backlot. Red leaks down the walls. Holed up in an old butcher's shop, three thieves plan their last big score: stealing a serum to Stbo. The money will allow...

The Returned series 2 arrives on More4 in the UK tonight, Friday the 16th of October. We spoke to its creators and cast…
Fabrice Gobert, the French creator of supernatural drama The Returned, speaks good English. An inevitability of using a second language though, is the odd grammatical slip. One such slip made by Gobert at the press launch for The Returned series two is too perfect to let pass by. A pitfall of writing fantasy TV, Gobert said, is that “you can lost yourself”.
Add a capital letter to the ‘l’ word, and you can say that again.
During its enviably long run, Lost became both the high and low benchmark for atmospheric, existentially fraught TV dramas. Its early seasons gripped viewers, but its later runs frustrated many by failing to achieve the perfect ratio of mysteries to answers. That’s the tricky challenge The Returned is facing in series two.

Richard Ayoade shot to fame as Moss in The It Crowd but it was Submarine, his debut behind the camera, that won him critical acclaim. As his new film, The Double, is released, he talks about pride, performing and giving up his pop dreams
The premise of Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1846 novella The Double is simple but ingenious: a man lives an entirely unremarkable existence until one day his exact doppelganger shows up. This incongruous situation fast becomes insufferable for two reasons: first, the new guy is slick where he is stammering, popular where he's forgettable, Day-Glo to his beige; and, second, because no one else notices any likeness at all between the pair of them.
The Double, it's said, is meant as an allegory: the straight man is Dostoevsky in real life, shy and often awkward; the arriviste is the author 2.0, the person he sometimes wished he was, who is quick-witted and irresistible to women.

Reece Shearsmith has said that The League of Gentlemen could return one day, but has seemingly ruled out an imminent comeback.
The actor and writer told Digital Spy and other journalists that he, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Jeremy Dyson were wary of not ruining the legacy of the show.

Leos Carax followed his short film Strangulation Blues (1980) with the tragic Boy Meets Girl in 1984. Starring Denis Lavant and Mireille Perrier, Carax’s first feature announced a new and exciting presence in both French and World cinema. Boy Meets Girl premiered in May 1984 at the Cannes Film Festival in the Independent Critics Week section, certainly a great venue to premiere a film and quite an impressive place to show a first feature as well. This film introduced many of the themes and cinematic problems that Carax would continually return to in his later films, such as a chance encounter between two people, failed romance, meditation on silent and contemporary cinema, and poetic treatments of Carax’s own biography.
Boy Meets Girl is an intense depiction of a social outsider and the way this outsider relates to the world around him. Alex (Lavant) is a tiny and timid Parisian. His screen...

He's the tabloid whipping boy turned angel of vengeance; the TV comedian who's gone serious with his new film Philomena. At 48, Steve Coogan's career is going full tilt. So why does he have a massive chip on his shoulder, with 'mushy peas and a boat of gravy on the side'? Xan Brooks finds out
One rainy Friday in October, Steve Coogan takes a trip from the Lake District to an expensive part of London. He rolls into town a man in transit, still half-dressed for the country with a yellow tweed cap pulled down round his ears. The car ferries us through sodden streets to a private members club, where a table is booked in an upstairs room. But the hostess is stricken; the place has standards. She won't let him in until he takes off the cap.
It's fitting that Coogan doesn't pass for clubhouse material. His...

Alan Partridge, back in a new film, remains the actor's most memorable part, but much has changed since he first portrayed him – from Hollywood success to his presence at the Leveson inquiry
When Armando Iannucci finished work on the second series of I'm Alan Partridge in 2002, he told Observer readers that Steve Coogan's best-loved character had reached the end of the road. "I got a sense by the end of filming," he said, "that this was probably enough." By then, Coogan had developed a love/hate relationship with his Radio Norwich-presenting alter ego. The comedian wanted credibility and Hollywood stardom, but what he got was people shouting "a-ha!" at him in the street. A decade after Partridge's debut on the Radio 4 show On the Hour, it seemed like a good time to put Alan's sports casual suits into mothballs.
Eleven years on and Radio Norwich's finest is on the verge of movie stardom.

Starring in a new film and two sitcoms, the fourth member of The League of Gentlemen is about to become a lot more visible. Not that he wants to
Plenty of comedians take up acting; these days, headlining Hammersmith Apollo is a Rada diploma by other means. But they get acting jobs because they're big names, and big personalities. It would be hard to say the same about Reece Shearsmith. He's a Perrier award-winner – with the sketch troupe The League of Gentlemen – but no household name. He's got parts coming up in all manner of mouthwatering film and TV projects, but he's not being billed as a celebrity funnyman. "I'm not a comedian, am I?" he asks, brow furrowed over his cappuccino in a Soho club. The perplexity seems genuine. "I'm very unsure of myself as a person, and I know I'm quite anonymous as me."

Julie Walters and Matt Lucas on board as British comic prepares to make big-screen debut in tale of ailing rodent
He has won a Perrier award at the Edinburgh fringe, fronted the successful small-screen clip show TV Burp, and recorded a novelty record with Coronation Street star William Roache (sample line: "I made some mistakes, real howlers, especially with the kids"). Now the British comic Harry Hill is set to make his big-screen debut in an eponymous movie co-starring Julie Walters, Matt Lucas and Jim Broadbent.

He has won a Perrier award at the Edinburgh fringe, fronted the successful small-screen clip show TV Burp, and recorded a novelty record with Coronation Street star William Roache (sample line: "I made some mistakes, real howlers, especially with the kids"). Hugh Laurie: 'There's a sensual pleasure involved in making music that I just can't get from acting'
His role in House made him the highest-paid actor ever in a TV drama, but with a new album out this week Laurie is keen to follow his real love
About an hour into my encounter with Hugh Laurie, in a suite at the Dorchester in London, he starts protesting at length about how boring his answers to my questions are. Arriving arm and arm together at Fig & Olive in Los Angeles, the Zero Dark Thirty Best Actress nominee and Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo sipped Perrier-Jouët Champagne in the main room before Chastain spotted her costar from last year's The Help, Viola Davis, and Davis's husband. Chastain, 35, hugged and kissed the 31-year-old Passi, making it clear to all who saw them that the two are,...
