While much time still stands before the conclusion to the Duffer Brothers’ “Stranger Things” Netflix series, with Season 5 awaiting a deal for its actors, the prequel play — “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” — will give audiences a glimpse further into the past and the origins of the Upside Down.
Set in 1959 Hawkins, the play will focus on the arrival of Henry Creel to “a regular town with regular worries.” Teenage Jim Hopper, Bob Newby and Joyce Maldonado also star, as does a younger Dr. Martin Brenner (Patrick Vaill), who began the cruel experiments on Young Henry.
As with any new iteration of “Stranger Things,” there’s a new crucial character — this time, it’s Patty Newby (Ella Karuna Williams). There is also a Principal Newby (Matthew Pigeon), but that figure is of less importance to the plot.
“The main thrust of the story is Patty and her little budding romance with Henry,...

Being geeks, it's not unfair to say we are open to various paths in life no matter how crazy they may be. But I think this one may give me some pause. Tom Peters left his fiance in 2008 to become her puppy dog, and they've been together ever since. This is...man, I'm having trouble trying to find the words for it. I don't understand it, and I'm not entirely sure that I want to.
Either way, it deserves your attention, and you should know that this is a thing. (This is real by the way. I've checked.)...

The Toronto Silent Film Festival got off to an impressive start at Innis Hall on Thursday night, as a packed room experienced the inspired fusion of two complementary works of art, created 85 years apart. One of the most exciting things about silent films is their tantalizingly protean quality, thanks to the conditions under which they were produced. What might once have been considered a weakness (especially from the point of view of an autocratic auteur intent upon controlling every aspect of the production) has now become a source of strength. Because they rely upon the kindness of musical strangers in order to come fully into being, silent films have an open-endedness to them which makes them infinitely more available (at least in some ways) to contemporary audiences than classic films made...

We continue our examination of the business book First, Break All the Rules with an interview of author Marcus Buckingham. Why did he write the book, and why are managers more important than leaders?
What was the impetus for you to write First, Break All the Rules?
My job at Gallup had been to build selection interviews for people who were excelling in particular positions--everybody from housekeepers to leaders. And one of the jobs that many companies ask to build interviews for is managers. We had literally hundreds of thousands of recorded interviews of great managers, talking about what they do differently. And a comparison group of managers who were less effective in these companies talking about what they did. So one of the impetuses was just a huge amount of research, what amounted to 80,000 interviews of great managers from a variety of different industries.

We continue our examination of the business book In Search of Excellence with an interview of author Tom Peters. Why was it so successful, what is the book's legacy and what does a restaurant owner in Chicago have in common with Jack Welch?
What was the impetus for you to write In Search of Excellence?
In the mid to late '70s the U.S. was going through something that, on many dimensions, looks closely akin to what's going on today with China, only it was with Japan. And the idea was that America's time was up. Japanese companies and the Japanese economy was going to take over the world. It was extreme, as it turned out--just as I think a lot of the language is today. A couple of guys, Bill Abernathy and Bob Hayes, wrote a seminal article in Harvard Business Review which was called, "Managing Our Way to Economic Decline.

How were the top companies of the 1980s so successful? For Hp and Walmart, they focused on their employees. We continue our Leadership Hall of Fame series, a year-long look at the top business books and authors, with an excerpt from In Search of Excellence (1982) by Tom Peters and Robert H. Waterman, Jr.
Although most top managements assert that their companies care for their people, the excellent companies are distinguished by the intensity and pervasiveness of this concern. The only way to describe it adequately is through example.

In one study, eighteen out of twenty Hp executives interviewed spontaneously claimed that the success of their company depends on the company's people oriented philosophy. It's called "the Hp Way." Here's how founder Bill Hewlett describes it:
I feel that in general terms it is the policies and actions that flow from the belief that men and women want to do a good job,...

We continue our examination of the business book Purple Cow with an interview of author Seth Godin. What companies are using a purple cow strategy now, and how is Seth trying to change book publishing?
What was the impetus for you to write Purple Cow?
Years ago, I was lucky enough to become friends with Lionel Poilane, the greatest boulanger who ever lived. His bakery often had a line out the door, and people would fly from Japan (dozens a day) just to buy a bunch a bread and fly home with it. Lionel was smart and generous and incredibly honest in his fidelity to his dream.
Two weeks before I was scheduled to have lunch with him in Paris, he and his wife died in a helicopter crash. His energy and vision left a void, not just for me, but for thousands. I decided that one way I could...

We continue our examination of the new business book Practically Radical with an interview of author William C. Taylor--one of the cofounders of Fast Company magazine. Taylor explains how the book came together, and how the business world has changed in the years since his last book.
What was the impetus for writing Practically Radical?
I want Practically Radical to be a manifesto for change and a manual for making it happen, at a moment in business and social history when change is the name of the game. We're all still struggling to learn lessons from the catastrophic meltdown of the last few years. I started to worry that too many organizations and leaders were learning the wrong lessons--they were becoming conservative and risk-averse, they were learning to resist innovation as opposed to embracing it as the only way out of our funk. I hope readers will use Practically Radical...

Mike White became CEO and president of DirecTV last January. But on 'Undercover Boss' (Sun., 9Pm Et on CBS), he's merely an employee named Tom Peters. At a Denver call center, things get off to a bad start when "Tom" accidentally refers to a female caller as "sir."
From there, he can't figure out the woman's satellite-tv troubles, nor what to say. Fellow customer-service rep Chloe must type out nearly word-for-word what he tells her.
White also fails to keep the call under 10 minutes, the company goal. After 21 minutes, the customer hangs up. "Yeah, I know, I screwed up," says White. An unhelpful and ineffectual call center? Shocking.

Mark Waid's planned Harvey speech on copyright, piracy, digital distribution, and the like is now posted at Cbr. Please note that this is his Platonic ideal speech, not what I heard in the room-- as I recall it and he himself noted, the speech he gave was significantly, shall we say, rougher. Sadly, no one has posted an actual transcript or video yet, which is a shame as I think that may have been even more important. (And yes, I have a lead on a copy.)
A while back, I wrote about a meeting I had with DC Legal talking about comics piracy, and I talked about how comics were being Napsterized. In the light of Mark's call to start a dialogue on these topics, I'd like to revisit that topic-- sadly, five years on, the issues are still with us.
Seth Godin recently talked about what publishing should...
