Ellis Marsalis Jr., New Orleans jazz legend known as a pianist and teacher as well as the father of Wynton and Branford Marsalis, died Wednesday from complications of Covid-19. He was 85.
According to his son, Ellis Marsalis III, Marsalis died after developing pneumonia. “I was with him in the hospital for six or seven hours yesterday. Branford was with him Monday, I was with him yesterday and Jason was with him today. He passed right after Jason departed,” Ellis Marsalis III told the Associated Press.
Born in 1934 in New Orleans, Marsalis studied at Dillard University and later Loyola University New Orleans, and after graduation established himself as a highly sought after teacher, instructing people who would go on to become some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz. Among his famous students are Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., and Marlon Jordan.

Chariots of Fire
Sprinting in before the rerelease of the 1981 movie and the Olympics, Mike Bartlett's version promises to be no mere screen-to-stage adaptation. A nifty young cast of rising stars alongside some established talent should make sure this is a show that runs and runs. Hampstead theatre, London NW3 (020-7722 9301), Wednesday until 16 June.

These Doctor Who stories are flashing before my eyes at a fair old pace. It seems like only yesterday that I was reviewing 20th anniversary tale The Five Doctors. Now it's the turn of 25th anniversary story Silver Nemesis. Given the lightning speed passing of time, it'll probably seem like days before I'll be sitting before a 50th anniversary special. Given the Gold anniversary, it'll probably be set on the planet of Voga, as an army of Axons do battle with the natives and The Doctor – presumably to the strains of the dreary Spandau Ballet dirge, which always sounds to me like an elephant's got stuck halfway down a water slide at a swimming pool for yuppies.
Too bad then that Silver Nemesis doesn't quite live up to the high expectations of being the official 25th anniversary story. Don't get me wrong, it's reasonably entertaining fare, but there's a whole host of problems lurking around.

He might be Britain's most famous saxophonist, but Courtney Pine spends an awful lot of time in the dog house. Sometimes he's in the metaphorical kennel to which the jazz establishment consigns those who don't conform to its maxims. But more often he's down in the garden shed, practising his musicianship in the place he really does call "the dog house".
