In 2016, I attended a conversation between filmmaker Joss Whedon and actor Mark Ruffalo, who Whedon recruited to star in "The Avengers" as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. Hosted by the Tribeca Film Festival, this was the same one where Whedon said "Avengers: Age of Ultron" made him feel like "a miserable failure."
During the talk, Whedon confessed how he feels that he lacks the eye of a great director. This moment of vulnerability by Whedon stuck out to me because it echoed criticism of his work I'd absorbed online as a budding cinephile. These critics would argue that Whedon's directing never matured past middling TV-level craft, as seen on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer." At the time, I was one of the Whedon faithful and stubbornly refused to see it, but my mind has been cleared now.

The movies like to lionize stunt people, from the fugitive thriller The Stunt Man to Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to the upcoming big-screen reboot of The Fall Guy. They do dangerous work in near-anonymity, toiling in close proximity to stardom with few of the rewards. They can be a little crazy. And they have a lot of fun doing things most of us would run away from fast.
But that fun comes with risk, and in the new HBO documentary David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived,...

Of all the actors to emerge in the 1970s, there are few, if any, as captivating, unpredictable and exciting as James Woods. He began the decade, and his on screen career for that matter, for legendary director Elia Kazan in The Visitors (1972), and in the next few years established himself as one of American film's most promising young performers. He turned up as villains in such classic TV shows as Kojak and Streets of San Francisco, but he also appeared in some major 70s movies too, such as 1973's The Way We Were, Arthur Penn's Night Movies (1975) and The Gambler (1975). But it was his performance in The Onion Field (1979) which really signalled his arrival, as the sociopathic cop killer Greg Powell. The film, based on Joseph Wambaugh's best-selling non-fiction book, was a critical smash and earned Woods his first wave of acclaim.

When stunt performer David Holmes, who had doubled for Daniel Radcliffe on all eight of the Harry Potter movies, was seriously injured rehearsing a flying scene for the final chapter in 2009, his career as a stuntman came to a sudden end. Holmes broke his neck performing a jerk back stunt and was paralyzed from the chest down. He has spent the subsequent 11 years adjusting to life with limited mobility only in his arms and hands.
But his love for his profession hasn’t faltered, and he has now teamed up with his “acting double” Radcliffe for a new podcast, Cunning Stunts, in which the pair interview stunt performers from around the globe to shine a light on the people responsible for some of the most memorable sequences in film history.

When the likes of The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Jurassic Park began ushering in the CGI revolution almost 30 year ago, nobody could have predicted how ubiquitous the technology would become over the next several decades. Advances in visual effects have seen budgets for Hollywood blockbusters get higher and higher, pushing the boundaries of what can be realized onscreen, with pixels often being an easier and safer option for staging action set-pieces than putting stunt performers through the wringer.
The advent of CGI also coincided with the rise of the comic book movie as the industry’s most bankable genre, with characters and powers that couldn’t be realistically depicted in the movies beforehand now being created via computer. The biggest beneficiaries of this have been Marvel Studios, with the McU reigning supreme as the most lucrative and popular franchise in the business.

‘Book Week’ did not qualify for the Offset.
Eleven years since the introduction of the Producer Offset (Po), Screen Australia has expressed concern about an increase in applications for feature films that have unreasonably high fees.
A big proportion of those fees is being reinvested in the belief that will meet the criteria for qualifying Australian production expenditure (Qape).
The legislation limits the amount that can be claimed as Qape on above-the-line fees to 20 per cent of total film expenditure .
“Alarm bells are ringing at the growth in films that set out on this trajectory having unreasonably high fees,” the agency, which administers the concession via the Producer Offset and Co-production Unit (Pocu), warned this week.
“If the budget has been inflated because of the high level of fees due to re-investments the 20 per cent cap becomes less of a guide when assessing arm’s length.

Ryan Reynolds talks taking on a new action role in The Hitman’s BodyguardRyan Reynolds talks taking on a new action role in The Hitman’s BodyguardTanner Zipchen8/16/2017 10:00:00 Am
The Hitman’s Bodyguard follows Samuel L. Jackson (the hitman) and Ryan Reynolds (the bodyguard) on a 24-hour journey from England to The Hague, Netherlands, so the hitman can testify against an evil dictator (Gary Oldman).
No surprise, the storyline meant they’d get to film in some pretty cool locations across Europe, and the Amsterdam leg of the production — where we met up with Reynolds last summer — made for some of the most action-packed days.
From a van full of singing nuns to a speedboat chase and cars flipping into the historic Amsterdam canals (this is the first movie with permission to shoot in the canals since James Bond and Diamonds are Forever) this set definitely drew a crowd.

Bollywood is coming…to Game of Thrones! According to reports, Neil Nitin Mukesh has been offered a role in HBO’s ultra-popular fantasy series.
Stunt director Greg Powell was reportedly impressed by Neil’s action sequences in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, leading him to offer Mukesh a role in the HBO series.
“Greg has directed two sword-fighting sequences in Prdp for which I had to train for over a month in order to get the stance and wrist movements right. He seemed pretty impressed with all the hard work I put in and made the offer when we were shooting for the climax scene a few months ago,” Neil told the Mumbai Mirror.
Game of Thrones is wildly popular among both U.S. and international audiences. Adapted from the book series by George R.R. Martin, the series often features gory violence and strong nudity but Neil is up for the challenge.

The very posh British action-director Greg Powell who has done the stunts for Fast & Furious 6, the last James Bond film Skyfall and several Harry Potter films, has been roped in to do Salman's very intricate action scenes in Sooraj Barjatya's Prem Rattan Dhan Payo. Barjatya and 'stunts' may seem to be a contradiction in terms. But according to a source from the gentle director's team, "This time there will be a lot of fights...fun fights. Salman will be shown doing sword fencing, something which we haven't seen in a Hindi film since Pankaj Parasher's Rajkumar." According to the source, Salman Khan is having a ball with the fights. "Salman hates gruesome violence. He feels it puts off his younger fans, the kids especially and their parents. The fights in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo are the kind we see in the big Hollywood fantasies, flamboyant and fabulous." A...

Sometimes it’s a curse when you watch various language films. Especially when the remake season churns out yet another one. You rely so heavily on the writers and the actors to give you something to enjoy and walk away with. Walking into Holiday was like that for this writer, but alas, she didn’t walk away with much. In fact, after watching A.R. Murugadoss take Ghajini from Tamil to Hindi, I was more scared. Scared to expect anything like Ghajini’s history. Well, history did not repeat itself and the magic of re-creation has failed.
The story is pretty simple. Military man Virat played by Akshay comes home for holidays but stumbles into a terrorist game plan. On the side we have Saiba played by Sonakshi Sinha for the funnies and some glamour. But it doesn’t take a long time for people to see where the connecting dots are.

The 46-year-old actor will be seen next in Holiday: A Soldier is never off duty. The film, directed by Vipul Shah, features quite a lot of action scenes and we heard that Akshay was quite excited about them.

They reportedly recommended a few stunt coordinators out of which Greg Powell was finalized. According to the brief sent over by Vipul and Akshay, he shot a rehearsal video with his team which was later sent to them.
Akshay and Vipul were reportedly quite impressed with his stunt ideas.
Once Greg and his team came to India, they rehearsed the action scenes with Akshay Kumar for almost a month.

Founded in 2007, Radical Studios is a multimedia company that incubated comic books for exploitation in other forms. Among their earliest releases was Hercules, boasting a Steranko cover, and it came with high production values and a bit of a buzz., The character returned for a second miniseries in and this interpretation captured Hollywood’s fancy. After years in development, production on the movie adaptation began today. Thew film enters a crowded summer 2014, especially for super-hero films, coming after Captain America: The Winter Solider and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and just before X-Men: Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy (raising the question whether or not four Marvel Universe films in five months will reach the saturation point).

A stuntman working on the final "Harry Potter" movie has been hospitalized following a daring action sequence, just a year after Daniel Radcliffe's body double fell from a harness and suffered severe spinal injuries.
Movie action man Greg Powell, 56, suffered a broken shoulder in a motorcycle crash while filming the final installment in the wizard franchise, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II", last week. The accident, which occurred at the Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England, is said to have happened after Powell's long trench coat became trapped in the rear wheel of the bike, sending him flying into the air, according to Britain's The People newspaper.
Last year David Holmes, who doubled for Radcliffe in the first part of the "Deathly Hallows" movie, broke his back at the same studios while he was practicing flying scenes.

HollywoodNews.com: A year after Daniel Radcliffe’s body double on the “Harry Potter” films broke his back in a paralyzing fall from a harness while filming a flying scene, yet another stuntman on the films has reportedly been hospitalized after an action scene for “Deathly Hallows” went wrong.
Stuntman Greg Powell, 56, broke his shoulder during a motorcycle crash last week when his trench coat was trapped in a wheel and sent him flying off the bike during filming in Hertfordshire, England. Fans of the books can assume this was part of the aerial fight scene early on in Deathly Hallows, involving Hagrid on Sirius Black’s flying motorbike before himself crashing to the ground. Let’s hope that Powell, like Hagrid, makes a quick recovery!

Digging up The Onion Field with Harold Becker
by Jon Zelazny
On January 27th, 2010, Gregory Ulus Powell went before a parole board at The Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo, California. Powell has been serving a suspended death sentence for the 1963 kidnapping of Lapd officers Ian Campbell and Karl Hettinger, and the murder of Campbell.
The crime was the subject of L.A. cop-turned-author Joseph Wambaugh’s 1974 non-fiction bestseller, The Onion Field. Five years later the movie appeared, directed by Bronx native Harold Becker, who went on to popular hits like Taps (1981), Sea of Love (1989) and Malice (1993).
With Greg Powell back in the news, I met with Becker at his office in Beverly Hills.
Harold Becker: The Onion Field was my big break. I had made one feature film in England, The Ragman’s Daughter (1972). It was well received over there, but didn’t really cut through here.
