Began his career as a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal. Later contributed articles and short stories to magazines. During the late 1930s, he wrote, produced and directed radio shows in New York City.
Son of screenwriter Robert Presnell Sr. and his wife Adeline Antoinette Millspaugh.
Was a strong supporter of Amnesty International and of the anti-nuclear organization SANE.
