The work of a great, original, natural filmmaker, Wanda continues to confound viewers that don’t recognize honest human reality when they see it. A woman dispossessed, uprooted and adrift no longer has a self-definition, just a basic drive to subsist and find someone who values her. Morals? It’s hard enough just to survive. Director-actress Barbara Loden isn’t Wanda, yet she is — her film erases the distinctions between movies, theater and reality, something John Cassavetes never quite accomplished.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Venice International Film Festival (1932-2012), the 2012 edition will feature a retrospective of ten films presented during past Venice Films Festivals.
The films were selected on the basis of rarity, using the copies from the Collections of the Historic Archives of the Contemporary Arts of the Biennale (Asac).
As has often been pointed out by historians and researchers, the films from the Venice Film Festival preserved over the years in the Asac represent a valuable and extremely important legacy of documents. In many cases, they are the only copies of films that were considered lost, or of versions that differ from the copies successively released in theatres.
The retrospective project consists of a limited number of films not otherwise available in 35mm or DVD copies, and that have never been restored. The Biennale will keep one 35mm or Dcp/HD-cam copy of all the restored films,...

Barbara Loden's 1970 road movie about a housewife who goes on the run has been saved from the scrapheap and restored
Barbara Loden's life story is a scriptwriter's dream. A poverty stricken childhood, which she escaped first via modelling, then television and Hollywood stardom. Tempestuous marriage to On the Waterfront director Elia Kazan during which in 1970 she wrote, starred in and directed the movie Wanda. Finally, there was the fight to follow up on her impressive directorial debut, cruelly denied when she died 10 years later aged just 48, at precisely the time her remarkable film was finally gaining long overdue recognition.
Wanda's reputation continues to grow and perhaps the key to its deep resonance, which BFI London film festival audiences can experience at two rare screenings this month, is that its source is so personal to Loden.

IFC Films Sheridan and Buscemi
In the 1985 film “Variety,” director Bette Gordon tackled the idea of female sexual empowerment and desire through the lens of pornography. For her latest film “Handsome Harry,” which debuts today in New York, Gordon flipped her interest in gender dynamics to the male perspective.
“Handsome Harry” stars Jamey Sheridan as a divorced Vietnam veteran who’s called to the bedside of Tom, a dying Navy buddy played by Steve Buscemi. Harry promises to apologize to a gay fellow vet the two men and their friends assaulted 30 years earlier. Harry visits each of the men who participated in the attack — including Aidan Quinn as a now-pacifist professor and John Savage as a homophobe with a gay son — before an emotional visit to the victimized soldier (played by Campbell Scott).
Gordon says she was attracted to Nicholas T. Proferes’s script because it reminded her of the strong,...

I know it looks dire as it's 28% lighter (at least so far) and minus an artistic director, but no fear, there's still more to come, and with what's been announced theirs some interesting sounding stuff, especially a film we wrote about briefly called Accidents Happen. Also premiering is the comedy Stay Cool and the Danish film Original, along with the North American premier of The Exploding Girl which we also wrote about.
