Our planet can be absolutely terrifying. From unpredictable earthquakes to monstrous storms, there’s really no shortage of ways in which our cosmic home can kill us. And yet, our species perseveres, with humanity going so far as to entertain itself by telling stories about how we can overcome – or at the very least survive – the fury of nature. In fact, these stories have become so prevalent in popular culture that disaster movies are known to be one of the most profitable genres in all of cinema, and while some audiences remain critical so-called “disaster-porn,” I’d argue that the best of these films are really about the endurance of the human spirit.
And if you’re planning on telling a story about people coming to terms with how fragile they are when confronted with nature, why not place the camera in the hands of your own main characters? I mean,...

Olivia Castle (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) knows things are about to be bad. Despite her doctor’s kind assurances that her laser eye surgery is routine and harmless, despite the stuffed bear she clutches, Olivia cannot help but shudder. Strapped to a table, her head held still and her eyelids pulled open, Olivia only grows more agitated. In contrast, the doctor goes through the setup process in a patient monotone, calmly talking her through the process. So confident is he, that the doctor doesn’t even worry about stepping out for a moment, leaving Olivia temporarily unattended.
Of course, he doesn’t know what we know. After her life was saved by co-worker Sam Lawton (Nicholas D’Agosto), who convinced her and others to get off of a bus minutes before it was involved in a horrific accident, Olivia and her fellow survivors have been hunted by Death.

Those in need of a shot of testosterone for Christmas just might make do with “American Renegades,” though it’s unlikely this knucklehead adventure will do much better Stateside than in the various territories it’s played over the last 18 months. Release-delayed from the start, the international co-production offers a particularly dumb kind of gung-ho Ugly Americanism that would have seemed odd for a primarily European enterprise when filming started in early 2015 — and seems even more so given political shifts since.
Having so far purportedly earned back just a tiny fraction of a budget said to be in the high eight figures, this tale of Navy SEALs seeking hidden Nazi gold during the Balkan Wars a quarter-century ago was a terrible idea on many levels. Still, it’s smoothed over to an extent by the sheer glossy expense of big if uninspired action-movie packaging. EuropaCorp is launching on 10 U.S.

“Do you have any idea the shit storm that you have created?!”
I’ve got a new trailer here for you to watch for an entertaining heist action thriller that revolves around a team of Navy SEALs. The film is called American Renegades, and it’s inspired by a true story that follows a team of Navy SEALs in 1995 as they attempt to solve a long-forgotten mystery while uncovering an immense treasure of Nazi gold at a bottom of a lake in war-torn Serbia.
The movie seems to be filled with lots of fun, over-the-top action that audiences will enjoy. If they’re into that kind of thing. I don’t know, I think the movie looks like it will be a blast! It doesn’t hurt to see J.K. Simmons being a hard-ass in it!

"The only thing more dangerous than the mission is this team of renegades." EuropaCorp USA has debuted a brand new official trailer for the action heist thriller titled Renegades, formerly known as The Lake. This was originally set for release in early 2017, and the first trailer debuted in 2016, but it's just now getting to theaters this fall - apparently. The film tells the sort-of true story of a team of Navy SEALs who try to find long-lost Nazi gold at the bottom in a lake during the Bosnian War in the 90s. The eclectic cast includes J.K. Simmons, as well as Sullivan Stapleton, Ewen Bremner, Sylvia Hoeks, Diarmaid Murtagh, Charlie Bewley, Clemens Schick and Dimitri Leonidas. They're totally overselling this now with all the big action, guns, tanks, and wise-crackin' American patriotism from these elite SEALs. Whatever works. Here's the new official trailer (+ new poster) for Steven Quale's American Renegades,...

Regardless of your feelings towards Luc Besson’s most recent cinematic output, nobody can deny that a production carrying his name can usually be relied upon to bring something new, if not always coherent, to the action genre. In the case of Renegades, a film co-written by Besson and directed by Steven Quale, you might be hard pressed to find anything positive to say about this lazily put together, badly acted, and above all, poorly judged production.
Following a group of Navy Seals as they make their way through war-torn Bosnia in the 90s, Renegades not only offers a historically inaccurate account of the events, it also manages to infuriate further by presenting a ludicrous storyline held together by a series of poorly executed action set pieces.

After two years, Stx Entertainment has “Bad Moms,” “The Gift” … and more than a half-dozen other titles that range from near misses (“Desierto”) to outright flops (“The Bye Bye Man”). Never mind, said motion picture group chairman Adam Fogelson at his studio’s CinemaCon presentation Tuesday. Five Navy SEALs, $300 million in lost gold, one incredible mission – what could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, as the explosive first trailer for crime caper Renegades attests.
Placing the Oscar-winning J.K. Simmons in the role of a no-nonsense army chief – seen here barking orders in a manner that evokes memories of Whiplash – Renegades takes place in 1995 Sarajevo, where a crack team of SEALs fly off the radar in a bid to recover a stash of lost Nazi gold from the icy depths of the Bosnian lake. Complicating matters is the fact that they’re deep within enemy territory, setting the stage for nail-biting chase sequences, firefights, and plenty of explosive set-pieces.
Hatched by Taken‘s Luc Besson and Richard Wenk, EuropaCorp is the studio behind the action-thriller, and even from the reveal trailer alone, it’s clear that Besson and co. are looking to tap into a similar over-the-top...

I've got a fun trailer here for you to watch for a film called Renegades. It's a heist action thriller inspired by a true story that follows a team of Navy SEALs in 1995 as they attempt to solve a long-forgotten mystery while uncovering an immense treasure of Nazi gold at a bottom of a lake in war-torn Serbia. The trailer is packed full of action, and as you'll see, some of it is completely over-the-top, which is what makes the film look entertaining.
The film was directed by Steven Quale (Final Destination 5, Into the Storm ) from a script co-written by filmmaker Luc Besson and writer Richard Wenk (The Mechanic, The Equalizer, The Magnificent Seven). The cast includes J.K. Simmons, Sullivan Stapleton, Ewen Bremner, Sylvia Hoeks, Diarmaid Murtagh, Charlie Bewley, Clemens Schick, and Dimitri Leonidas.

"We're talking about a major unauthorized operation." EuropaCorp USA has revealed a trailer for an action heist thriller titled Renegades, formerly known as The Lake. The film tells the sort-of true story of a team of Navy SEALs who try to find long-lost Nazi gold at the bottom in a lake during the Bosnian War in the 90s. The film's cast includes J.K. Simmons, as well as Sullivan Stapleton, Ewen Bremner, Sylvia Hoeks, Diarmaid Murtagh, Charlie Bewley, Clemens Schick and Dimitri Leonidas. I enjoy the way they're selling this as a heist movie, but it's also one helluva gnarly trailer with some serious action scenes. Dive in. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Steven Quale's Renegades, originally from Yahoo: In Renegades, a group of Navy SEALs attempt to solve a long- orgotten mystery while uncovering an immense treasure hidden in a lake in war-torn Serbia in 1995. Studio Babelsberg’s co-production of the upcoming Captain America sequel and Steven Quale’s action film The Lake are to benefit from new German funding specifically targeted at VFX studios.
The new opportunities came after the Munich-based regional film fund Fff Bayern extended its dedicated international co-production funding programme to include support for VFX producers based in Bavaria.
According to Ilse Aigner, Bavaria’s Minister for Economics and Media, Energy and Technology, the additional funding would support local companies “in this difficult international competitive market”, bolster Bavaria’s position as a VFX hub and, simultaneously, benefit the overall sector as the measure will bring additional productions to Bavaria.
VFX studio Trixter was awarded $495,000 (€450,000) for the virtual shoot of Captain America: Civil War in order to begin work on the production from the end of August.

Last year, Luc Besson brought us the action thriller Lucy, and director Steven Quale delivered the silly Into the Storm. Now the two are teaming up, for better or worse, for a new action thriller called The Lake. Besson will produce through his Europa Corp. production banner, and the project is said to be one of the most expensive projects they've taken on to date. Now Deadline reports J.K. Simmons, fresh off his Oscar win for Whiplash, has joined the supporting cast of the film which follows a group of Navy SEALs who attempt to solve an age-old mystery involving a treasure underneath a lake in war-torn Serbia. Sounds cool. However, Simmons isn't one of the leads as he's taking the smaller role of the Rear Admiral and leathery boss to the Seals who doesn’t exactly approve of what his team is doing but supports them nevertheless. The Seal...

The ensemble around him is beginning to fill out, with J.K. Simmons, Charlie Bewley and Diarmaid Murtagh reporting for duty.Into The Storm’s Steven Quale is handling the shot-calling for this one, which finds a group of Navy SEALs who discover a mysterious trove of treasure hidden in a lake in war-torn Serbia. Their quest becomes to find out who left it there and what its ultimate purpose might be. Naturally, that will lead to bullets flying and plenty of tough scrapes. It’s a Besson production: you were expecting quiet debate about war crimes? Simmons, who recently scored an Oscar for his performance in Whiplash, has several films due out this year, including Terminator Genisys (July 3), Worlds Apart and Rock Dog.

Somehow, despite toplining Cinemax’s Strike Back and starring in high-grossing follow-up 300: Rise of an Empire, Aussie actor Sullivan Stapleton has yet to break into the mainstream. That may be about to change, though, now that EuropaCorp hitmaker Luc Besson has set him to star in The Lake.
The thriller will focus on a group of Navy SEALs who get on the trail of a long-forgotten mystery after uncovering a treasure trobe in a lake in war-torn Serbia.
Besson, who previously launched Liam Neeson, Jason Statham and Scarlett Johansson to action super-stardom, penned the script for The Lake with The Equalizer scribe Richard Wenk. Steven Quale (Into the Storm) is set to direct.

"Casino Royale" and "The Mask of Zorro" helmer Martin Campbell is in early talks to direct the espionage thriller "Hunter Killer" at Relativity and Original Films.
Based on George Wallace and Don Keith's novel "Firing Point," the story follows a renegade Russian military leader who pushes the U.S. to the brink of a nuclear confrontation.
Cut off from all outside communication, a submarine commander and an elite Navy special forces unit are all that stand between the Russian assault and all-out war.
Campbell is just the latest name attached to the helm of the project, and this would mark his first film since "Green Lantern".
Previously the likes of Antoine Fuqua, Phillip Noyce, McG and Steven Quale have all been linked. Neal Moritz, Toby Jaffe and Ryan Kavanaugh are producing.

Turtle power saved the Australian box-office from experiencing another weak trading session last weekend while Boyhood and a Kiwi vampire spoof had handy debuts.

Paramount.s movie, which reportedly cost $125 million, seems to be resonating with older moviegoers who grew up with the Turtles in the 1980s and 90s and with kids who enjoy the Nickelodeon animated series.

It’s like Roland Emmerich made a preposterous two-and-a-half-hour climate-change disaster flick — *cough* 2012 *cough* The Day After Tomorrow *cough* — and then someone went in and cut out most of the cheesy melodrama: the subsumed personal issues that come to the fore in the face of certain death, the contrived heat-of-the-moment romances, the triumph-of-the-human-spirit moments when the music swells and the tears are jerked. Whoever did such a thing probably thought they were doing us a favor, but it turns out: not so much. Because what we’re left with, in Into the Storm, may not be risible Mystery Science Theater-worthy crap, but it’s still pretty bad,...

A series of "twisters" rip through a small Midwestern town – and a father and his two teenage sons try to make sense of their relationship as they struggle together to survive the storm. The special effects here are fine. The director Steven Quale gives a sense of the full destructive power of the tornado. Humans, cars and buildings seem like pieces of clothing caught in some huge tumble dryer. There is an engaging strain of self-mocking humour, too, in the film's portrayal of the YouTubers in reckless pursuit of disaster footage and of the TV team, led by hard-driving documentary-maker Pete (Matt Walsh), also doing its best to get into the eye of the storm.

Steven Quale’s first movie was Final Destination 5. Hailed as a slight return to form for a franchise bogged down by the sequel dogma of most protracted horror franchises, perhaps this spelled good things for Quale, maybe by upping the spectacle, action, and tension of a disaster flick? Into the Storm represents all those things; a perfect playground for an upcoming genre talent. Sadly, it rarely pays off on any promise – and reminds you that, actually, Final Destination 5 wasn’t all that good anyway.
In the American town of Silverton, it’s Graduation Day. But a bright future is darkened by black clouds, as the stormchaser team led by Pete (Matt Walsh) and Allison (The Walking Dead’s Sarah Wayne Callies) detect a massive storm system heading straight for Silverton. After the initial tornado hits, Gary (Richard Armitage) must rescue his son, Donnie (Max Deacon), before the next...

Richard Armitage stars in this week's disaster drama Into the Storm as a single father fighting to protect his two sons – one of whom is played by Max Deacon – from a deadly and unprecedented cluster of tornadoes.
When Digital Spy caught up with the pair recently, we took the opportunity to ask Armitage which Hobbit cast members he would want with him in a real-life disaster situation.
Armitage and Deacon also discussed their favourite disaster movies, their most challenging days on set, and what they'd both do in a real crisis.

"I suspect I'd be going in the opposite direction, but I'll be picking people up on the way," Armitage mused. "It's hard to predict, isn't it? You certainly hope that you have a survival instinct. I don't think...
