Exclusive: Sony Pictures and Picturestart won an auction and will pay mid-six against high six-figures for Yeti, a Peter Gaffney spec script that will be produced by Jon Silk through his first look deal at Picturestart.
Gaffney last year sold the horror spec Don’t Go Into The Water to Universal. Yeti takes place deep in the mountains, where an avalanche unleashes something primeval from the glacial ice. A father and his daughter battle to survive a merciless predator who blends in with the snow.
Erik Feig and Jessica Switch championed the project for Picturestart and Brittany Morrissey spearheaded deal for Sony. Verve held the auction and reps the writer. It’s the agency’s second material sale to Sony in a week after the 7-figure deal for Cola Wars, the Jason Shuman Ben Queen pitch.

The battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi is heading to cinemas, as Sony pays seven figures for movie pitch on the subject.
As Hollywood’s tectonic plates continue to rearrange themselves in the wake of a disruptive few years, one type of film that seems to be rising to prominence is that of the product movie. In the last year or so we’ve seen Tetris, Air, Flamin’ Hot (the Cheetos origin story) and Barbie all land with varying degrees of impact upon our shared cultural consciousness.
Obviously, Barbie is something of a special case, distinguishable from the other films as it treats its product in an entirely distinct fashion and found great success doing so. The other films on that list told a more straightforward story about the origin of an iconic product and as we’ve already predicted, they won’t be the last to do so.

Exclusive: Sony has stepped up with a seven figure bid to uncap Cola Wars, a movie pitch that tells the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola, sparking the unforgettable “Cola Wars” of the mid-1980s. This behind-the-scenes account, from Michael Jackson’s fiery mishap to the New Coke debacle, tells the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender vying for the No. 1 spot. Sources said it was around $1.5 million while Sony said it was $1 million, still a whopping deal for a pitch.
It falls into place alongside films about products like the Ben Affleck-directed Air, about the battle by Nike to win Michael Jordan for a shoe line that transformed the company. There were rival bids massing with elements attached, but Sony stepped up. Maia Eyre, the exec who oversaw the hit Anyone But You,...

The devil is in the details — or, in “The Addams Family 2,” a digitally animated sequel aimed at ages six and over, in the demented ghoulish sparkle of jokes that are just macabre and kiddie witty enough to tickle you. Take, for instance, Uncle Fester, voiced by Nick Kroll with an extreme goofy lisp, sizing up the creaky brown wood camper in which the Addams family are about to take a three-week cross-country trek and saying, “Oh, it’s a hybrid — half car, half eyesore!” Or the way that Morticia, voiced by Charlize Theron in the most musical of aristocratic purrs, doesn’t just walk but glides around in her cadaverous skin-tight dress that drapes over the floor in trails that look like black silk octopus legs. Or Gomez (Oscar Isaac), in his Igor-as-head-waiter hodgepodge of an Old World accent, saying, “Tell that Billie Eilish she’s a little too sunny for my taste.

The Addams Family 2 Trailer: "Everyone’s favorite spooky family is back in the animated comedy sequel, The Addams Family 2. In this all new movie we find Morticia and Gomez distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners, and totally consumed with “scream time.” To reclaim their bond they decide to cram Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester and the crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation. Their adventure across America takes them out of their element and into hilarious run-ins with their iconic cousin, It, as well as many new kooky characters. What could possibly go wrong?"

ABC in May delayed a decision on its Bermuda Triangle-themed sci-fi drama Triangle, which was a late, international shoot, until the pilot was finished. The pilot starring Mike Vogel will be wrapping editing this weekend.
There had been speculation the project would not be going forward. But ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke is reserving judgment on its fate until she sees the final product. “I want to wait and make a final decision when the editing of the show is completed, and it has all special effects,” she told Deadline on Monday.

TV producers are taking inspiration from unexpected places these days - including music. Dolly Parton has an anthology series, Heartstrings, in development at Netflix that's based on her catalog of songs, and she's not the only musician whose songs are inspiring new shows. Heart of Life, which was ordered by ABC, is inspired by a John Mayer song. Other than lending his song to the show's title and inspiration, though, is Mayer involved in any official capacity?
The series is based on Mayer's 2006 song by the same name, which was part of his Continuum album. Mayer serves as an executive producer on the show, alongside Ben Queen, Paul Weitz, Melvin Mar, and Jake Kasdan. According to Deadline, the show was developed internally at 20th Century Fox Television for a while, with a spec script written by Queen; the project went into development in part because of Mar's friendship with Mayer.

If asked to name your top five favorite John Mayer songs (or probably even your top 20 . . . ), chances are "The Heart of Life" wouldn't make the cut, and that's not because it isn't a good song - it's because you probably have never heard it. Taken from Mayer's third studio album, Continuum, the song was never even released as a single, but that's not stopping ABC from developing a drama series of the same name, with Mayer at the helm. Yeah, we're confused, too, but definitely intrigued.
Heart of Life will follow two sets of adult siblings from vastly different worlds who discover they share a father, forcing them to revisit everything they thought they knew about their shared parent and their separate childhoods. If a TV network asked you to base a new series on one of John Mayer's songs, which would you pick?
Maybe "Your Body Is a Wonderland" could be turned into a rom-com? "Say" could be about a young progressive politician navigating her new role in DC? Even "Daughters" seems rife with familial drama. But in what might be today's most unexpected piece of entertainment news, ABC has decided to base a new series on a track off Mayer's Continuum: "The Heart of Life."

ABC has nabbed Heart of Life, a drama from Powerless and A to Z creator Ben Queen, director Paul Weitz, Fresh Off the Boat executive producer Melvin Mar and 20th Century Fox TV.
The project, inspired by singer-songwriter John Mayer’s song of the same name, had been developed internally at 20th TV for the past several months and written on spec by Queen. It stems from Mar’s friendship with Mayer. Mar’s longtime producing partner Jake Kasdan, was originally eyed to potentially direct but was not available as he is directing the Jumanji sequel. In 2006, Cars and its hotshot hero, Owen Wilson’s Lightning McQueen, sped away with the hearts of moviegoers around the world, with the franchise becoming one of the most profitable in Pixar’s history (mostly due to through-the-roof merchandise sales). The film’s commercial success stood in stark contrast to its tepid critical reception, with most critics agreeing that this was the first time a Pixar movie fell below the high bar set by their prior work. Cars 2, a dazzling but ill-conceived globetrotting spy thriller, fared even worse than its predecessor, garnering harsher criticism and a far less successful line of product tie-ins.
With Cars 3, Pixar returns to a franchise that youngsters still love but has grown putridly stale for almost everybody else. The bad news is, the threequel doesn’t deliver anything that feels fresh, revitalizing or progressive either in its story or its presentation. The good news is that,...

For the juggernaut that is Pixar, the one consistent mark on an otherwise essentially spotless record has been the Cars franchise. Give or take one or two other outings that some people are higher on than others, this franchise is the only thing keeping the company from essentially a perfect record. This week, Cars 3 hits theaters and hopes to right the ship as it becomes part of a trilogy. Cars has a mixed reputation, but Cars 2 is Pixar’s somewhat red headed stepchild. Can Cars 3 change the trend? Well, yes and no. It’s going to be the best in the series to some or most, but it’s still very much lesser Pixar overall. I suppose your mileage may vary here (no pun intended) with this one. This sequel looks at how racer Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) deals with no longer being the new kid on the block.

I don't know about you, but I've been enjoying the hell out of DC's Powerless. It's one of my favorite shows to watch right now. Unfortunately, it looks like NBC has cancelled the show. Not only that, but they aren't even going to be showing the final three episodes of the season! What the hell!?
Apparently, not everyone feels the same way that I do about the show. Ratings are low and there's apparently a lot of drama behind-the-scenes. THR says:
The Vanessa Hudgens comedy underwent a significant retooling before it premiered. Series creator Ben Queen exited the series ahead of its launch, with Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern tapped as the new showrunners. While Powerless remained a workplace comedy set in the superhero universe, everything else about the series changed, including its portrayal of familiar heroes from the DC Comics universe.

NBC has unceremoniously pulled Powerless from its weekly slate, fuelling rumors that the DC spinoff series is on the verge of cancellation.
First spotted by ComicBook, the network has quietly reshuffled its slate of programming so that this week will herald a new episode of Superstore – the workplace comedy starring America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Mark McKinney and Lauren Ash – in the same slot once occupied by Powerless. We should stress that this switcheroo doesn’t necessarily mean that NBC is ready to pull the plug on Ben Queen’s superhero sitcom, but it doesn’t exactly look good, does it? Couple this with the fact that Powerless wasn’t renewed alongside its fellow NBC series – namely The Blacklist and Shades of Blue – and it seems as though the show’s days on the air are numbered.

If you thought The CW wrangling together four shows into a week-long crossover event was peak superhero TV, you probably won’t make it long into Powerless. Although the show isn’t particularly focused on any caped crusaders or men of steel, its lifeblood and humor thrives when its audience will understand why a Civil War dig on a DC Comics show is kind of funny. In reality, NBC’s new not-a-superhero superhero show means well, and has a few moments of clever comic book tie-in gags, but it’s as effective as a syringe of Joker Anti-Laughter Venom when it comes to the comedy department.

The creative force at the head of NBC's upcoming comedy series Powerless has left his job, leaving a hole in one of the DC Comics universe's TV properties. While the development is reportedly not threatening the future of the show, it is one more hiccup in the quest to make a cross-platform, coherent extended universe from DC's characters.
Showrunner Ben Queen walked away from Powerless this week, leaving producers in search of a new creative chief for the series. Powerless stars Vanessa Hudgens as a young insurance adjuster whose specialty is taking care of ordinary citizens whose lives are impacted by the destructive activities of superheroes and villains. The series is a comedy, the first of its kind in the DC universe.

Powerless will have to find another showrunner to give the power. Series creator Ben Queen has departed his NBC comedy set to premiere midseason, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Set in the world of DC Comics, the freshman workplace comedy was set to begin production at the end of this month, but that start date has been postponed while Warner Bros. Powerless is the first series picked up for the 2016-2017 season that I’m really looking forward to. It’s set in the world of superheroes, but it’s not about superheroes — it’s a workplace comedy about the little guy caught in messes created by superheroes (mostly fringe DC Comics characters). Here’s the official logline: In the first comedy series set in the universe of DC Comics, Vanessa Hudgens (Grease Live, High School Musical) plays Emily, a spunky young insurance adjuster specializing in regular-people coverage against damage caused by the crime-fighting superheroes. It’s when she stands up to one of these larger-than-life figures (after an epic battle messes with her commute) that she accidentally becomes a cult “hero” in her own right … even if it’s just to her group of lovably quirky co-workers. Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily...

We had heard that NBC’s upcoming workplace comedy series, Powerless, would feature references to some of the big DC superheroes, but we also got word that at least one established comic book character would actually show up in the flesh – and it looks like that’s going to be Crimson Fox.
While she’s not exactly a big name, Crimson Fox has been a card-carrying member of Justice league Europe and does have a very interesting and unique power set: as well as superhuman speed and agility, she can emit pheromones that stimulated intense sexual attraction in men. It remains to be seen if that will carry over to the show, however.
