‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Dynamite Entertainment has released a ton of Army of Darkness comic books over the years, but with the upcoming series Army of Darkess: Forever they’re going back to the source: this comic book is a direct sequel to director Sam Raimi’s 1993 film (watch it Here)! And this sequel comes with a bonus in that it continues on from both endings of the film.
While the theatrical cut of Army of Darkness found our time traveling hero Ash back in his own time, working at S-Mart (and fighting a Deadite in the aisles), the director’s cut of the film ends with Ash being dropped into a post-apocalyptic future.
Here’s the information on Army of Darkness: Forever #1: The story picks up immediately after the events of the beloved film, jumping between three fun timelines. The Techno Army of Darkness of 2093, the S-Mart aisles of 1993, and the middle ages chaos of Castle Kandar,...

Written by Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi, Army of Darkness has the following synopsis: Ash is transported back to medieval days, where he is captured by the dreaded Lord Arthur. Aided by the deadly chainsaw that has become his only friend, Ash is sent on a perilous mission to recover the Book of the Dead, a powerful tome that gives its owner the power to summon an army of ghouls.

We already knew that Bruce Campbell prefers the original "Army of Darkness" ending, but /Film writer Danielle Ryan recently spoke with him to learn exactly why. The different final scenes have often been the subject of debate amongst "Evil Dead" fans. For the 30th anniversary of "Army of Darkness," the /Film staff even offered their opinions on each ending.
On the one hand, there's the theatrical ending that Campbell dislikes. In the final scene, Ash returns to the housewares department at S-Mart and brags about his adventures in medieval times. When a raging Deadite unleashes hell in the store, Ash saves the day with his boomstick and plants a big, victorious kiss on his co-worker Jenny. In this triumphant moment, /Film's defense argues, "Ash fully embraces the flawed hero he was always meant to be. The threat hasn't disappeared, yet he's ready for it. It shows his growth over the course of the three films.

On February 19, 1993, the third entry in director Sam Raimi‘s Evil Dead franchise – Army of Darkness (watch it Here) – reached theatres. Even though the film was a box office failure, it quickly earned a cult following… and by now, it probably ranks as one of the most popular horror comedies ever made. That’s why we have put together a video to celebrate 30 years of Army of Darkness, which you can now check out in the embed above!

As many of the film's fans know, Sam Raimi's slapstick medieval horror comedy "Army of Darkness" was not a hit upon its release in North American release in February of 1993. The film's budget was a modest 11 million, and it made only 21 million worldwide, little enough to be considered a bomb. After the film's release on VHS, however, a cult audience swiftly began to amass around it. If you were in high school in 1993, one might hear lines of Sam and Ivan Raimi's screenplay shouted randomly in hallways, each one a cult password for horror nuts in the crowd. It wasn't long thereafter that "Army of Darkness" began rounding the midnight movie circuit. It has been a mainstay in pop culture ever since.
Or, to paraphrase lead actor Bruce Campbell in his biography "If Chin Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor," a blockbuster is when a million people see a movie ten times.

Groovy! For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Ash vs. Evil Dead“, the three-season television series that aired on the Starz Network from 2015 through 2018.
One of the most sobering moments of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” came in the original introduction by franchise star Bruce Campbell, who explained that the series was made because fans wouldn’t shut up. Indeed, fans had been asking for years for another adventure with Ashley Williams after Army of Darkness, and the team finally obliged in 2015. The climate was right for the return of the Evil Dead at the time as studios and television networks were investing in horror series. Developed by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy, Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead” wasn’t just a dry run for fans. The series was a return to form for the Evil Dead series, one that never betrayed its source material...

For the first time in nearly a decade, a new "Evil Dead" movie is on the way. "Evil Dead Rise" officially has a first trailer, which means it's a real movie, which is still hard to believe after years of sequel discussions and rumors. Writer-director Lee Cronin has assured fans that the film will exist in the same universe as the original Sam Raimi classic, featuring buckets of blood and plenty of Deadites — despite the fact that, according to early synopsis from Deadline, it's moving the action from a secluded cabin setting to a Los Angeles apartment.
Ahead of the trailer's release, word was that "Evil Dead Rise" wouldn't feature some of the franchise fixtures Raimi fans know and love, like Bruce Campbell's Ash or Raimi himself behind the camera. But both Raimi and Campbell are producing along with Ghost House Pictures co-founder Rob Tapert, meaning the new flick...

First, a confession: This article's headline is a little inaccurate. We're actually going to talk about the two other Raimis who've led fruitful careers in showbiz, in addition to director Sam Raimi.
The first of them, Ivan Raimi, is a physician who co-wrote "Darkman," "Army of Darkness," "Spider-Man 3," and "Drag Me to Hell," all of which were directed by his brother Sam. Ivan and Sam Raimi also co-created the action-adventure series "Spy Game" and helped develop the TV show "Ash vs. Evil Dead," on top of penning a trio of episodes for the horror anthology series "50 States of Fright." The list of talent heading to Quibi just keeps on getting longer.
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” herself Rachel Brosnahan is the latest to get in on the act, signing on to star in a horror anthology series at the short-form content platform titled “50 States of Fright.”
However, Brosnahan is far from the only big name to be involved with the project. “Spider-Man” director Sam Raimi is attached to direct and co-write Brosnahan’s episode alongside Ivan Raimi. Meanwhile, Travis Fimmel, Christina Ricci, Jacob Batalon, Ming-Na Wen, Taissa Farmiga, Asa Butterfield, John Marshall Jones and Ron Livingston will each star in an episode of the series.

For horror fans, especially the ones who love Evil Dead, there has always been the dream of seeing Bruce Campbell return in another film. Yet with the Evil Dead remake by Fede Alvarez hope was somewhat lost… That was until the announcement that Ash vs Evil Dead, a television series based on the original trilogy, was coming.
Bringing back Bruce Campbell as Ash, and with the involvement of Sam and Ivan Raimi it was something of a dream come true for fans. That is of course, if they didn’t take a mis-step and ruin the big return of such a favourite character. Thankfully this isn’t the case, and Ash vs Evil Dead is something very special. And, for me, the fact that Lucy Lawless has been included in the cast just seals the deal. I’m a big Evil Dead fan, and I loved Xena too so the...

There will be no fourth season for Starz’s Ash Vs Evil Dead.
The premium cabler has opted not to move forward with a Season 4 of Sam Raimi’s horror comedy starring Bruce Campbell, Lucy Lawless and Ray Santiago, and the Season 3 finale on April 29 will serve as the series ender.
“Ash v Evil Dead has taken audiences on a wild ride for three seasons thanks to the fantastic performances and creative efforts of Sam, Bruce, Rob and the entire cast and crew. We are proud to send the show out with a bang…and a splat,” said Carmi Zlotnik, President of Programming for Starz.
Campbell also tweeted his farewell to “the role of a lifetime.”

Starz has canceled the horror-comedy series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” after three seasons, the network announced on Friday.
The upcoming season 3 finale, set to air Sunday, April 29, will now serve as the series finale.
The decision comes as Starz prepares to launch two new series next month, the Mexican-American family drama “Vida” and “Sweetbitter,” an adaptation of the 2016 Stephanie Danler novel about the New York City restaurant industry.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” starred Bruce Campbell — reprising his role as Ash Williams from the “Evil Dead” film franchise — alongside Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo. “Evil Dead” filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert served as executive producers on the series alongside Campbell, Ivan Raimi and Rick Jacobson. Mark Verheiden was showrunner with producer Moira Grant.
Campbell and Raimi first teamed up for the original 1981 film “The Evil Dead.” Shot on a shoestring budget of approximately $350,000 in the woods of Tennessee, the film went on to gross over $2.4 million worldwide and achieved cult status.
The duo later reteamed for a series of sequels and a 2013 reboot before the TV series follow-up “Ash vs. Evil Dead” debuted on Starz in 2015 to critical acclaim.

Ninety-five members of the Writers Guild of America have signed a letter sent to the guild’s board of directors urging that it divest from gun companies and any companies that support the NRA.
The letter, sent to the Board Tuesday, warns “Gun violence enabled by the ready availability of military grade weapons, has become one of the biggest threats to the safety and security of the American people.” The letter continues, “We urge the WGA and the WGA Pension Plan to divest of all stocks of any gun or ammunition manufacturer, and any company that provides material support to the gun industry lobbying organization called The National Rifle Association, whether through donations, deductions or other means (e.g. Federal Express), until such time as sensible national gun reform legislation is passed.”

For two years on the trot, Ash Vs. Evil Dead laid claim to Starz’s Halloween slate, serving up a delightfully over-the-top dish of blood, guts, and chainsaw-wielding maniacs.
With season 3, though, the network has shuffled its deck in such a way that the horror-comedy series, one rustled up by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy, has now relocated to winter – February 25th, to be specific – for its third year on the airwaves. Exactly how Ash Vs. Evil Dead will fare in this new slot is up for question, but there’s a new threat on the horizon for Mr. Williams and according to Bruce Campbell, it’s the biggest Deadite of all-time.
Speaking to Bloody-Disgusting, the actor teased an upcoming fight in the season finale, in which Ash will square off with a “sixty foot tall Kandarian demon,” saying:
“It’s the big one, the mother of all demons.

After 23 years passed since “Army of Darkness” dropped and a misguided reboot failed to woo fans new or old, writers Sam and Ivan Raimi reunited with star Bruce Campbell for what proved to be one of TV’s finest hybrids. An old-school action-adventure mixed with a horror show packing some serious frights, “Ash vs. Evil Dead” delivered laughs to boot — good ones!
But resurrecting a hero of yesteryear once — even over the course of 10 half-hour episodes — is a lot easier than bringing him back for good. The pilot, directed by Sam Raimi, was a stunning achievement exemplifying the passion and joy inherent in telling Ash’s uniquely scary and silly story… meaning it would have been virtually impossible for Season 2’s opener to match up.
