Veeze has joked that 2022 was his “rap internship” as he prepped his debut LP, Ganger, and spent time around rap stars like Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, and Babyface Ray, observing them and learning rap-star decorum. Now, with the album out to much acclaim, the 28-year-old Detroit native is on the verge of stardom, and he’s the one whose example younger artists will be following.

Gunmen: Mario Van Peebles fondly recalls working with Christopher Lambert on underrated 90s actioner
The other day, one of our writers sat down with Mario Van Peebles to talk about his upcoming spiritual sequel to Posse, Outlaw Posse. In the pretty awesome conversation, we asked Mario about what we consider a pretty underrated movie of his, Gunmen. This 1994 action flick paired him with Christopher Lambert, with an all-star cast that included Denis Leary as the film’s villain, Patrick Stewart, and nineties dream girl Brenda Bakke, as well as 90s rappers like Big Daddy Kane, Eric B, Rakim, Doctor Dre and Ed Lover – who all played themselves. It’s a tough movie to find these days, but Peebles had fond memories of what they were trying to accomplish with it.
“Gunmen tips a hat to The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. My character, Christophe’s character, and the other character have a piece of the puzzle as to where the cachet of gold is.

Liam Gallagher has already made it clear he thinks the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is “full of Bumbaclarts,” and now he says the nomination of artists like Mariah Carey only reinforces his opinion.
Carey is one of this year’s 15 Hall of Fame nominees alongside Oasis and the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Cher, Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest, and Sinead O’Connor. Speaking with The Sunday Times, Gallagher expressed that being nominated with such a range of artists devalues the whole idea of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: “As much as I love Mariah Carey and all that, I want to say: do me a favor and fuck off. It’s like putting me in the rap hall of fame, and I don’t want to be part of anything that mentally disturbed.”

Liam Gallagher is being, well, very Liam Gallagher when it comes to Oasis’ nomination for the Rock Hall’s class of 2024. In other words, he did a take-down of the institution with his usual dry wit and candor via social media.

Parents just don’t understand, and they haven’t been alone in trying to make sense of Will Smith’s angry assault on Chris Rock a year and a half ago at the Oscars. Perhaps to remind the world that he was once wholesome and didn’t have to cuss in his raps to sell records, he’s reuniting with his old compatriot DJ Jazzy Jeff for a surely noncontroversial performance at A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop.

On Saturday night, rapper G-Eazy took the stage with the New Orleans band, The Soul Rebels, for an energetic set in front of a sold-out crowd at New York City’s iconic venue, The Blue Note Jazz Club.
The rapper, who knew the band growing up in his native New Orleans, told the crowd, “Ya’ll are hearing one of the greatest bands of all time tonight!”
The band, an eight-piece ensemble that blends funk, soul and jazz with traditional New Orleans brass, attracted an A-List set of guest hosts over their four-night residency at the club including Ja Rule, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and comedian Tony Woods.
“Performing a Blue Note Jazz Club residency is the holy grail of artistic experiences for our band. This opportunity brings together our favorite artists including our long-time friends and collaborators Rakim and G-Eazy and marks our debut performances with Big Daddy Kane and Ja Rule.

“I mean, there were people who used to look at us at that time and say, ‘Where is the band?’” recalls LL Cool J of hip-hop’s early years and the reaction audiences would have.
As the genre hits its 50th birthday on August 11, no one is asking where the band is anymore. The culture that has emerged out of what Kool Herc was doing that night in 1973 in the rec room of 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the West Bronx is the most popular musical genre on the planet.

Clement Virgo’s “Brother” is the kind of movie whose opening scene is obviously meant to serve as a skeleton key for the rest of the story to come, but this decades-spanning drama — a lyrical and probing adaptation of David Chariandy’s novel about two siblings coming of age under the care of their Trinadadian single mother in the suburbs of Toronto — is so unstuck in time and shot through with raw emotion that its clunkier moments tend to function like tender maps back to the heart of the matter.
It starts with a formative memory that feels like a legend, as scrawny teenage Michael (“The Last of Us” actor Lamar Johnson) and his very big bro Francis (“The Underground Railroad” star Aaron Pierre) stand beneath the power lines that run along the Scarborough bluffs and listen for secrets amid the electric hum. “The buzz gets louder the higher you get,...

Hip-hop has been the gift that keeps giving to GloRilla - it's propelled her to success most new artists don't see this early on in their careers. Just a little over a year after dropping her breakout, now-platinum hit, "F.N.F. (Let's Go)," the Memphis native has added even more impressive accomplishments to her résumé. She's scored another platinum banger with "Tomorrow 2" collaborator Cardi B; released her debut EP, "Anyways, Life's Great"; performed at the 2022 American Music Awards and 2023 Grammy Awards (where she was also nominated for the first time); and, most recently, appeared in a nostalgic Sprite campaign with hip-hop heavyweights Nas and Rakim and fellow rising star Latto. And she's just getting started.
Today, GloRilla is still soaking in all of her achievements. One moment she can't get over, though, came along in February, when she shared the stage with hip-hop legends like LL Cool J, Method Man,...

Hip-hop heads, rejoice: LL Cool J is about to embark on his first headline arena tour in 30 years, and he’s bringing a particularly stacked crew along with him. The rapper has curated the “F.O.R.C.E. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, “The F.O.R.C.E. Live” tour will feature 18 shows each with a rotating cast of supporting acts. Each night will bring LL Cool J, The Roots, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and DJ Z-Trip to the stage, playing alongside a rotating cast of acts that include Salt-n-Pepa, Queen Latifah, Rakim, Common, Mc Lyte, Method Man & Redman, Big Boi, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Ice T, Juvenile, Doug E. After a whirlwind breakout year, GloRilla is finally settling into her fame. The Memphis native, 23, burst onto the music scene seemingly overnight in April 2022 after the astronomical success of her now-certified gold hit "F.N.F. (Let's Go)." She then launched to superstardom after her September 2022 collaboration with Cardi B, "Tomorrow 2," became one of the biggest hits of the year. But even amid the hustle and bustle of her 180-lifestyle, the rap star tells Popsugar, "I now got to a point where I can just handle it."
"It's not overwhelming no more," GloRilla adds of navigating her star status. "It used to get like that at certain points, but I think for the most part, I know how to handle it."
"The biggest change [in my life] is really traveling the world."

Life is hard enough in your teenage years. You’re still trying to find comfort with yourself, and it’s easy to get insecure when you’re viewed as an outcast. And the new trailer released by Amazon Studios takes us on a journey of walking through life while sticking out amongst the crowd in the biggest way possible. “Morning time, I get on my knees, I pray to Allah/Forgive me for the shit that I did,” harmonizes Lil Durk on “Pelle Coat,” a track from his new album, Almost Healed. The 30-year-old Chicago rapper has steadily gathered momentum ever since he signed with Def Jam in 2013. He’s arguably the most commercially viable proponent of drill music, and that success allows him to float above the noise that roils heated discussions about the homegrown subgenre, even as he navigates the kind of industry bullshit — a long-running beef...

We now know the name of Rihanna’s first-born child. Per TMZ, the singer named her son with A$AP Rocky: RZA Athelston Mayers.
The name is presumably a nod to Wu-Tang Clan leader RZA.
Rih and Rocky welcomed their first child last May. Then, in February, the singer revealed that she was pregnant again while performing at the Super Bowl — her first live show in five years. Since then, she’s performed at the Oscars and stepped out at the Met Gala, where she always stunts as one of the fashion fundraiser’s best dressed. She’s also due to play Smurfette in a new Smurfs movie slated for 2025.
As for the Og RZA, Consequence caught up with the artist to discuss the final season of Hulu’s series Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Revisit our ranking of the iconic hip-hop group’s discography here. This summer, Wu-Tang will link...

Shaquille O’Neal is returning to rap.
The NBA legend who released four hip-hop albums in the ‘90s will drop a new single called “King Talk” on May 2 in celebration of the NBA Playoffs. It is a collaboration with Ghanian-American rapper Blackway.
O’Neal first teased the song on Feb. 7 on his Twitter, Instagram and TikTok in an animation video that celebrated LeBron James passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
The 51-year-old entertainer had success in the ‘90s with music, including the platinum-selling album Shaq Diesel, released in 1993. It featured the gold-selling singles “What’s Up Doc? (Can We Rock)” and “(I Know I Got) Skillz” — which both cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — as well as collaborations with late A Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg, Def Jef and Fu-Schnickens. Some of the tracks were produced by Epmd’s Erick Sermon and Tribe’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
