On April 11th, Severin Films will possess the souls of genre fans with the first ever fully restored presentation of Canadian nightmare generator Cathy’s Curse – one of the strangest Exorcist/Carrie/Omen-inspired grindhouse hits like never before, transferred in 2k from recently-found film elements and featuring new extras with long-lost star Randi Allen and producer/director/co-writer Eddy Matalon.
Forget what you’ve seen in blurry bootlegs and crappy budget packs. This first- ever restoration of the depraved Canadian shocker Cathy’s Curse is being hailed as the genre rediscovery of the year!
In 1947, a young girl is roasted alive in a car accident. Thirty years later, her grown brother returns to their childhood home with his mentally unstable wife and sweet daughter Cathy. But when the dead aunt’s vengeful spirit possesses the child, it will unleash an unnerving nightmare of creepy mediums, demonic dolls, and plenty of sick ‘70s foul-mouthed moppet mayhem.

“La La Land,” as expected, dominated the Oscar crafts, with Damien Chazelle’s musical valentine taking four awards for cinematography, production design, score, and original song. Still, it was predicted to win at least three more.
And it was a great night for Disney and its trio of winners: the zeitgeist-grabbing “Zootopia” (animated feature), Disney Animation’s third Oscar in four years, which trumpeted tolerance ahead of the Presidential election; Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” (animated short), Pixar’s R&D sculpting project that ended its 15-year shorts drought; and Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” (VFX), which innovated photographic-based realism. The award was shared by production VFX supervisor Rob Legato, Mpc’s VFX supervisor Adam Valdez, Weta Digital’s VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon, and Andrew R. Jones, the animation supervisor.

For the second time this year, a Blumhouse Production tops the Top Ten, as “Get Out” (Universal) scored $30 million this weekend, which is six times its production cost. The tremendous success of “Get Out” on Oscar weekend is significant for two reasons.
Oscar weekend box office often provides an ironic counterpoint to mainstream box office. This year, though, is a little different. For one thing, three of the Best Picture nominees (“Hidden Figures,” “La La Land” and “Lion”) are in the Top Ten, while three other Best Picture nominees are in the Top 20, despite being at the end of long runs.

“Get Out” comes on a weekend when the Oscars are expected to make amends for the presumed wrongs over the last two years of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

With 14 Academy Award nominations and a several prizes at the Golden Globes, Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” has generated more buzz this awards season than any other movie. Just to name a few categories, the musical is up for are Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Song and Best Film Editing, so naturally a little poking fun at the presumed frontrunner comes with the territory. A new mashup doing just that has been posted on FunnyorDie.

Martin Scorcese's powerful religious film, following the Catholic church's mission to instill Christianity in Fuedal Japan, Silence is coming out this March! Come inside to find out how you can get your hands on it early.
One of the biggest snubs of this year's Academy Awards, Silence, is making its way to digital and blu-ray, merely 3 months after being on the big screen. The Martin Scorsese religious feature, starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson will arrive on Blu-Ray on March 28th, but for audiences who can't wait that long the Digital HD version will be available March 14th.
Understandably, there aren't many added features for the Blu-Ray/Digital copy of Silence. If you haven't seen the movie, there really isn't much of a need for an alternate ending, deleted scenes, bloopers, or anything of the sort. Instead, the only new content will stem from a...

Quick question: Can you name one of the movies nominated for Best Picture? If so, you can do something that 60% of Americans can’t. That’s according to a poll commissioned by the Hollywood Reporter, which quizzed 800 moviegoers (half of whom voted for Hillary Clinton and half of whom cast their ballots for Donald Trump). That may sound like bad news for the Academy Awards ceremony, but 70% of respondents said they’d tune in anyway.

The 19th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards took place last night in Los Angeles. This year, the Excellence in Short Form Design category saw some stiff competition, with nominees such as Jude Law’s long-form Japanese Pepsi ad “Momotaro” and Beyoncé’s video for “Hold Up.” But at the end, colorful long capes, gladiator uniforms and samurai costumes won over Bey’s iconic ruffled yellow gown, sexy sleepwear and cool streetwear designed by B. Of the countless moments in “La La Land” that make you want to stand up and cheer, Ryan Gosling’s first piano solo hasn’t really been getting as much credit as it deserves. After Mia (Emma Stone) hears a few notes of a piano melody and stumbles into the bar where Sebastian is playing, Damien Chazelle captures their intense first connection in a single long take. The camera slowly moves right into Gosling’s face and then down to his hands as he passionately plays “Mia and Sebastian’s Theme” on the keys.

[New Series! Three Fittings will celebrate costume design in the movies. The number is necessary self-restraint for we love the art of costuming too much. We kicked off last week with La La Land icymi.]
Allied begins strongly with a weirdly lulling quiet parachute descent into the Moroccan dessert. Moments later the man from the sky is all wrapped up a stone blue headscarf, his face obscured, presumably to protect it from the sun and sand. This obscures the movie star within which is never a good thing so the scarf loses its functionality almost immediately. It's suddenly an accessory rather than a tool, just another texture and a complimentary color to the fetching earth tone ensemble on a ridiculously handsome man walking toward a car far off in the distance.
Who knew that an empty road in the desert could double as a runway?

After unleashing mayhem on the criminals who killed his dog, retired super assassin John Wick retrieves his beloved 1969 Mustang from the Russian mobsters who stole it, only to be pursued in a spectacular high-speed car chase through crowded New York City streets. Returning home, John’s plans to resume a quiet civilian life are cut short when Italian gangster Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio) shows up on his doorstep with a gold “marker” compelling him to repay past favors. “Thoroughbred” is a two character piece set in an imposing residence where the young women, teenagers, come together for tutoring but it quickly develops beyond that into new — and dangerous — territory.Director Cory Finley with stars Olivia Cooke, Anya Taylor-Joy
Emotionally challenged Amanda and contemptuous Lily reboot their childhood friendship after years of instability and judgment, thrown back together by standardized-test tutoring.
When Lily’s icy stepdad, Mark, conspires to ship her off to reform school instead of her dream college, Amanda’s nonchalant quips about killing him suddenly seem enticing. Even as Amanda’s sinister tendencies surface and the girls hatch a plan, the mutual manipulation that has always defined their relationship threatens to derail their ambitions.
They have a history which enables them to confide and challenge and manipulate one another.

Zoey Deutch Halston, Sage Logan Miller in “Before I Fall” by Ry Russo-Young
To begin about this film is to say it is a ‘Ground Hog Day’ story.
The lead character, a popular high school girl, has an unremarkable — if a bit troubling — life, including difficult friends, challenging social life, some boy / sex issues and some big questions for her as to “what’s it all about?”
But why? Toward what end? How to resolve?
As the story begins Sam is one lucky teenager. She’s beautiful, rich, and popular, with the hottest boyfriend and the most loyal friends.
But she and her posse can be cruel and heartless; since elementary school they’ve relentlessly bullied one of their unfortunate female classmates.
On Friday, February 12th, driving home from a party, Sam is in a dramatic car crash.
This mysterious car wreck at the end of her day leads to her — what?...

After stealing the show at the Academy’s VFX bake-off and earning a first-ever Costume Designers Guild nomination for animation, Laika’s stop-motion “Kubo and the Two Strings” could be headed for multiple Oscar noms besides animated feature.
Being slotted last at the bake-off certainly helped the Japanese fantasy directed by Laika president/CEO Travis Knight, but what was refreshing and eye-opening was the revelation that every shot involved VFX integration of small puppets and sets along with environment extension and CG enhancement. Plus the fact that, unlike the other contenders, Laika’s reel was able to include the informative end credit “making-of” sequence (watch below) that’s become a studio tradition.

The past comes alive in bold fashion in the leading Oscar contenders for costume design: “La La Land,” “Jackie,” “Hidden Figures,” “Fences,” and “Allied.” They all encompass love, aspiration, pain, survival, and rebellion.
Dig deeper, and four of the five are period pieces, although Damien Chazelle’s retro musical embraces classical Hollywood; “Jackie” and “Hidden Figures” present unconventional female heroism; and “Hidden Figures” and “Fences” offer compelling African-American dramas.
“La La Land”
Costume designer Mary Zophres strongly embraced a classic, if timeless, look for Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling). But she shopped affordably, including the sales rack at Sachs, and knew pragmatically that she’d have to make all their clothes for the big dance sequences. The dresses had to offer a flattering cut, the colors that Chazelle wanted and fluid movement in the skirts.
“In my mind, there’s a bit of an arc to Mia,” Zophres told IndieWire.

The European Film Academy — more than 3,000 filmmakers across Europe – voted for this year’s European Film Awards. The awards ceremony is hosted by different countries each year.
Three Scandinavian Oscar entries: “A Man Called Ove” (Sweden), “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki” (Finland), and “Land of Mine” (Denmark) won awards, along with Oscar submissions from Italy (documentary “Fire at Sea”) and Switzerland (animated film “My Life as a Zucchini”). Costume designer Lynn Falconer has many credits under her fashionable brown leather belt, having worked on such movies as Oculus, Straw Dogs, Before I Wake, The Alphabet Killer and Silent House. Lynn’s latest film, currently still in theaters, Ouija: Origin of Evil presented a new challenge though, as she was given the task of recreating the style of characters living in Los Angeles in 1967. To do this as authentically as possible, while adding her own flare, she visited numerous costume houses, estate sales and flea markets choosing to go down the more classic avenue rather than florals, which didn’t fit the dark vibe of the film. She also drew on inspiration from her own childhood, picking pieces she wore during that time. We spoke...

Laila Pakalnina’s “Dawn” (“Ausma”) premiered at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2015.
See the trailer here.
“The beauty of ‘Dawn’ lies in its richness, ambiguity and willfully elusive intentions. Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter
Based on a Soviet propaganda story about Young Pioneers (the Soviet equivalent of a Boy Scouts), a young boy named Morozov denounced his father to Stalin’s secret police and was in turn killed by his family. His life exemplified the duty of all good Soviet citizens to become informers, at any expense. In our film, 75 years later, we call him little Janis. He is a pioneer who lives on the Soviet collective farm “Dawn”. His father is an enemy of the farm (and the Soviet system) and plots against it. Little Janis betrays his father; his father takes revenge upon his son.

Et went behind the scenes as the ladies of The View got ready for Halloween ahead of Monday's show.
Traditionally, Halloween is a time for ghosts and goblins, but co-host Candace Cameron-Bure will be going the magical route by flying onto the stage as Tinkerbell.
ABC
"I went to Disneyland this summer and I took a picture side by side with Tink, and I was like, 'Hey! We kind of look alike,'" Cameron-Bure explained to Et. "So I thought it would be perfect to be Tinkerbell for Halloween."
Costume designer Fran Taylor said they worked on the outfit for nearly two months.

Set in the 1960s, Mike Flanagan's Ouija: Origin of Evil features a vintage setting for its scares. Playing a key role in bringing the film's bygone era to life is costume designer Lynn Falconer. With Flanagan's latest movie now in theaters, we caught up with Falconer for our latest Q&A feature, and she also provided us with two characters sketches that she did for the film.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Lynn. Were there any specific challenges or rewarding moments that you experienced while working on a horror film set in the 1960s?
Lynn Falconer: Specifically rewarding is finding a funky piece of wardrobe from the past and breathing new life into it by reimagining that piece on a character. I shopped thrift stores, boutiques, and estate sales to find the ’60s period, but while I had a firm rudder for accuracy,...

Over the weekend Viola Davis's camp confirmed they were officially aiming for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Fences. This disappoints us since she won the Lead Tony on Broadway for the role and now it seems like we're going to remain ages and ages away from another Woc winning Best Actress. It's been a long time since Halle Berry. Viola will of course become the most nominated black actress at the Oscars ever if she's nominated for Fences (which will be her 3rd nomination) making her the immediate frontrunner.
Can Viola & Denzel repeat their Tony winning dominance at the Oscars for Fences?

Tribeca Enterprises and Chanel have announced today the second annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program, which brings together industry support, artistic development and funding to assist and help new and emerging U.S.-based female writers and directors of short-form narrative films.
The program has selected five emerging female filmmakers to receive project support, and take part in master classes, one-on-one mentorship and peer-to-peer sessions during a three-day session at the end of this month. At the end of the program, each of the filmmakers will pitch her project to a jury of industry experts, and one filmmaker will be awarded full financing to produce her short film. The four other projects will each be awarded grant funds to continue the development of their films.

“You are the first woman on the first day of creation. You are mother, sister, lover, friend, angel, devil, earth, home.”
La Dolce Vita screens Wednesday September 28th at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar in ‘The Loop’) as part of their new ‘Classics in the Loop’ film series. The movie starts at 7pm and admission is $7. It will be on The Tivoli’s big screen.
There is sexy, and then there is Anita Eckberg, whose voluptuous figure splashing around the Trevi Fountain in Rome in Federico Fellini’s 1960 masterpiece La Dolce Vita, while wearing that bellissima black dress, was the ultimate symbol of male fantasy. The film won the Academy Award in 1960 for Best Costumes, thanks in large part to the black sleeveless gown that Miss Eckberg displayed in that famous scene. Costume designer Piero Gherardi worked in neo-realist Italian cinema from 1954 to 1971, notably on four key films by Federico Fellini.
