His movie "Summer of '42" is a retelling of his experiences on
Nantucket Island the summer he turned 14, where he lost his virginity
to his first love, a war widow named Dorothy whom he never saw again.
In a 2002 Scripps Treasure Coast Publishing interview, Herman Raucher lamented never hearing from Dorothy again after her letter to Herman Raucher in 1971 and expressed his hope that she was still alive.
He is the son of Sophie (Weinshank) and Benjamin Raucher, a WWI veteran. His father was an Austrian Jewish immigrant, who moved to the U.S. in 1900. His mother was born in England, to Russian Jewish parents.
