A special event capped off Friday November 3 at the Trieste Science + Fiction Festival, namely the 21st Golden Méliès ceremony. This culmination of the European Fantastic Film Festival Federation's (Effff) Méliès competition saw 8 feature films and 17 short films - silver Méliès winners of either affiliated or adherent festivals - compete for the top prize. The jury, comprised of film critics Beatrice Fiorentino, Fabrizio Liberti, and Jean-François Rauger awarded the feature film Méliès d'Or to Joachim Trier's supernatural love story, Thelma, while Magali Magistry's dystopian fantasy Expire took home the short film award. Filmmaker to give masterclass ahead of French theatrical release of Nymphomaniac Directors’ Cut.
Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier may not be headed to the Croisette this year but he will be touching down in France in May nonetheless for a masterclass at the Cinemathèque Française.
The special event on May 4 will tie in with the French theatrical release of Nymphomaniac Volume I and Volume II: Extended Director’s Cut by Les Films du Losange on May 6.
The distributor confirmed that it will be Von Trier’s first official visit to France since the “painful episode” at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, at which he made an ill-judged joke about being a Nazi during the press conference for Melancholia.
The episode led to him being temporarily declared “persona non grata” by the festival as well as a French police investigation into whether he violated a law on war crime denial.
The charges were dropped six months later and Cannes...

You might have noticed the coverage of this years ultra-sized Fantasia film festival in the Reviews and Interviews column of the site from a number of contributors taking in the festival: Mack, Shelagh, Peter, Todd, and myself, as well as a plethora of other Twitch writers hither and yon. Covering a festival of this size is a massive undertaking and I hope you enjoyed all the updates, interviews, and reviews. Rest assured there are still a few more to come. As Fantasia winds down with a screening of Metropolis Extended Edition and full orchestra, it seems to have been a raging success this year across the board. The festival announced its Jury and Audience awards, and they are below. It seems that the Subversive Serbia sidebar was a big hit, with controversial A Serbian Film getting one of the big audience awards.
