Washed up in films at age 26, he tried to kill himself in 1965 but
recovered and returned to the theater two years later where he received
critical applause for his work in "Howards End."
In films by happenstance at age 10 when he was tested and chosen by Ben Lyon, who was initially interested in casting Andrew's older brother
Robin Ray for the orphan lead in The Mudlark (1950). Robin proved too tall for
the role and Andrew got the part.
