Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.
From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.

During the early 1990s, long before “SNL,” Molly Shannon conned her way into a small part on “Twin Peaks.”
When starting out in Hollywood, the “Saturday Night Live” alum used a fake name (Liz Stockwell) and pretended to work for playwright David Mamet. Shannon’s pal Eugene Pack co-ran the “Mamet Scam,” which ultimately led to Shannon appearing on David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks.”
“We were trying to figure out how we were going to get in the door as actors,” Shannon wrote in her memoir, “Hello Molly!,” available from HarperCollins on April 12. “How were we gonna bust in? It was too hard to just slip your picture under an agent’s door. A random headshot? No one was ever gonna call. Then we hit on an idea. Eugene had studied with David Mamet. He was (and is) this giant, hugely successful guy, very respected — a big-time playwright and screenwriter...

Nope, this isn’t the new Bong Joon-ho movie, but a 3-D oldie from 1982. Although it’s by no means a great picture, fans equipped for Blu-ray 3-D will want to take a look — the depth effects fashioned with the over’n’under Sterevision system are some of the best yet. Stan Winston provides director Charles Band with the ‘Alien’ rip-off title critters, and added interest is provided via an early appearance by Demi Moore, who sleepwalks through her part but certainly looks good. A full complement of extras tell the making-of story; the feature is also encoded in 2-D, for really imaginative viewers.

When Audrey Horne, one of the most popular “Twin Peaks” characters finally returned for the Showtime revival, fans were left with more questions than before. The scenes between Audrey (Sherilyn Fenn) and a man named Charlie (Clark Middleton) were baffling, claustrophobic and antagonistic, at the very least.
In the scenes that spanned four episodes, Audrey seemed obsessed with going to the Roadhouse to find her lover named Billy, but her husband Charlie preferred to stay in and finish his paperwork, since it’s late and he’s already sleepy. The bickering usually alternated between Audrey insulting Charlie and urging him to put on his coat in order to go out to the Roadhouse.

As Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival came to a close, a key player was conspicuously Mia: Audrey Horne, who last was seen darting across the roadhouse dance floor, to husband Charlie, only to suddenly find herself staring into a mirror, in what appeared to be a pristine hospital setting.
The startling switch-up seemed to confirm, as many had theorized, that Audrey’s reality, chronicled in just a handful of scenes, was anything but. And that Charlie, played by Clark Middleton, perhaps wasn’t her husband, or even real.

Anything is possible in the world of Twin Peaks, and in this new season it’s been ridiculously hard to draw any conclusions or make any predictions at all. But, as the weeks go by, it only becomes clearer that evil Richard Horne is in fact the child of Audrey and Evil Coop. I didn’t want it to be true. I hated the idea that Evil Coop raped Audrey (while she was comatose in the hospital after the bank explosion way back in the series finale). But Richard was so evil in this episode, who else could be his dad?...

Brett Gelman had no idea what was going on. He arrived on the set of “Twin Peaks” to play Burns, the supervisor of a casino where a dazed Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) was winning one jackpot after another. Other than that? Pure mystery. Somehow, the long-lost FBI agent had escaped the interdimensional “Black Lodge” where the show had left him trapped 25 years ago. Gelman’s character was tasked with confronting Cooper about his massive haul. In between takes, Gelman recalled saying to MacLachlan, “I can’t wait to see what this all means.”
“Yeah,” MacLachlan replied, “Me too.”
Lynch’s latest round of episodes with the cult show was surrounded by so much secrecy in the months leading up to its premiere that even the actors were left in the dark. Gelman only found out about his role from his Los Angeles neighbor, Johanna Ray, who happened to be the show’s casting director.

Johanna Bennett’s and Mandy Ward’s third annual celebration of first time filmmakers concluded on March 9 with a tribute to no one other than Harvey Weinstein. The festival, one that puts forth newly formed filmmakers with the audience they deserve, makes sure that all aspects of filmmaking are met and that the aspiring filmmakers know what to do with their next film. Weinstein, of the famed The Weinstein Company, along with his brother Bob, has shown himself over the years to have supported first time filmmakers when no one else would. And his trust in these filmmakers have only proven themselves to be some of today’s best directors, writers, actors, and more.
In many ways, Weinstein’s support of such filmmakers has created them. Quentin Tarantino would not be a household name had Weinstein not decided to produce Reservoir Dogs, the same goes for Steven Soderbergh’s Sex,...

The Third Annual First Time Fest took place over the past weekend in New York City, from March 5th to March 9th. The festival, which celebrates first time filmmakers, had numerous panels that discussed topics such as financing films to getting the right marketing for the film to even talks from established filmmakers sharing their advice. The festival concluded with the honoring of Harvey Weinstein, as a tribute for “his support of first time filmmakers.”
A purely New York City centric film festival, the festival’s founders of Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward chose to show the films at the Core Club, the Village East Cinema, and the Wild Project, while the discussions and panels were featured at the B Bar and Grill. The festival allows for a five day competition among films that were completed by first time filmmakers for the chance to win international sales and theatrical distribution.

At the closing night awards ceremony, First Time Fest co-founders Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward honoured Harvey Weinstein for his distinguished career and support of first-time filmmakers. The 400 Blows by François Truffaut and Kurt Vonnegut's book Cat's Cradle influenced him when he went on to distribute Cinema Paradiso. Federico Fellini and Philippe de Broca's Jean-Paul Belmondo movies That Man From Rio and Cartouche were a part of his cinema education growing up in Queens, New York, which may have equipped him for his relationship with Quentin Tarantino.
Previously fêted for their commitment to cinema were Darren Aronofsky, by Martin Scorsese, and Julie Taymor. While waiting for Harvey's arrival, I joined Gay Talese and Tony Bennett for a lively conversation on movies, the demise of burlesque and tennis...

The second installment of the First Time Fest, the Second Time Around, took place in New York City from April 3rd to April 7th where ten first time filmmakers were able to showcase their films and possibly be in competition to receive distribution of their films by Cinema Libre Studios. Since its debut in March of last year, the First Time Fest has grown to honor and embrace first time filmmakers for their efforts in trying to make their first work and trying to get recognized in an ever difficult field of art.

The final installment of the First Time Fest… The First Time Fest’s closing night was held on March 4th. Hosted by Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist), the Players Club lit up with flashes of cameras and smiles of the first time filmmakers anxiously awaiting whose film will win the grand prize- the chance to have their film distributed by Cinema Libre Studios.
Johanna Bennett and Mandy founded the festival after noticing there wasn’t a venue for where new filmmakers can get their film viewed and appreciated. At the First Time Fest, there was a “First Exposure” series in which well known and accomplished directors would get their first directed films shown and have the chance to speak about the process. Some of these well known actors include Wes Anderson, Barbara Kopple, John Huston, Darren Aronofsky, Nancy Savoca, Michael Van Peebles, Hal Hartley, Sofia Coppola, Todd Solondz, and more.
In addition, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Ryan attended, speaking about their experiences while making Hoffman’s directorial debut, Jack Goes Boating. The film is about two adults (Hoffman and Ryan) having a crush on one another without taking any action to move forward in their relationship, all while they see the relationship of their friends ( John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega) fall. Curated by David Schwartz, the director of programming for the festival, here’s what they had to say about their film.

The First Time Fest was created by Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward as a way to showcase new upcoming filmmakers and their works, and to get them a head start in their industry. The festival occurred on March 1st to 4th at The Players Club in New York, which was a club started by some well-known writers and actors, including Edwin Booth (John Wilkes Booth’s brother), Mark Twain, and more.
While the festival does support new filmmakers in their journey, it also awards previous filmmakers who have made names for themselves. Being that this is the first year of the festival, the first ever John Huston Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema went to Darren Aronofsky. The award is named in honor of John Huston as he was a esteemed member of The Players Club, as well as considered to be one of the most influential writer, actor, director and producers of all times.

I support this new NYC Film Fest which a lot of our friends attended and also support. I went to their inaugural event in NYC a few weeks back and it felt good and I certainly like their Indie lineup. The following is from a recent press release:
Celebrating first-time filmmakers with a grand prize of theatrical distribution, hosted by the historic Players Club, First Time Fest also had additional participants to this year's unique event.
Harry Belafonte, Gay Talese, Michael Shannon & Ellen Burstyn have joined Christine Vachon, Fred Schneider, Sofia Coppola, Todd Solondz, Barbara Kopple, Scott Foundas, Eric Kohn, Emily Russo, Jenny Lumet, Darren Aronofsky, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hal Hartley, Peter Saraf, Nancy Savoca, Amy Ryan And Martin Scorsese participated In First Time Fest.
Belafonte & Shannon appeared onstage in the Ftf’s “Stand Alone! – Conversations With The Outstanding” series, one-on-one interview with notable cinema artists. Renowned author Gay Talese joined Christine Vachon and the B-52s Fred Schneider as another of the Ftf’s five jurors (the entire live audience at each of the 12 competition films was the 5th juror). Together, the jury and audience ultimately selected Grand Prize winner, Sal, a modern-day Western by Argentinian writer-director Diego Rougier which was offered theatrical distribution and full international sales representation from the renowned American film distributor, Cinema Libre Studio.
Acclaimed actress Ellen Burstyn, who worked with both Scorsese and Aronofsky served as the host of the Ftf Closing Night Awards program. As part of that festive evening, Martin Scorsese added his illustrious presence and belief in the art of cinema, presenting the first John Huston Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema to Darren Aronofsky. John Huston was one of the most prolific and versatile directors in the history of cinema. And with his mesmerizing debut film, Pi – made independently on black-and-white 16mm film – Darren Aronofsky was instantly recognized as a uniquely gifted new talent. His subsequent films: Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler and Black Swan, have more than fulfilled that promise.
In addition, Ftf had a special presentation of Andy Grieve and Lauren Lazin’s documentary about the band The Police, Can't Stand Losing You, featuring Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers.
On an exciting party note, and in conjunction with Ftf’s presentation of the Australian/Mongolian documentary Mongolian Bling, First Time Fest and Hip Hop Saves Lives presented “Project Haiti,” an album release party for Zing Experience at Webster Hall.
Representing a hybrid between a traditional film festival and a highly motivated audience participation event, Ftf presented a dozen Competition Films, which were judged by a panel of industry luminaries and the Ftf audience. All competition screenings were followed by “hot-seat” discussions between the jury and filmmakers, and all audience members then voted on the films. It was truly a contest of the best emerging filmmakers competing for the Ultimate Audience Award.
Competition Films – (please visit here for competition films & descriptions).
In addition to the Competition Films, Ftf presented First Exposure, a series of first films from now prominent filmmakers. Joining the line-up - and mostly attending the fest - was the exciting Opening Night presentation of Sofia Coppola with The Virgin Suicides, Todd Solondz with Welcome to the Dollhouse, Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket, Barbara Kopple with Harlan County, USA, Melvin Van Peebles with The Story of a Three-Day Pass, Pi from Darren Aronofsky, The Maltese Falcon from director John Huston, Poison from Todd Haynes, Jack Goes Boating from director Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hal Hartley’s The Unbelievable Truth, and True Love from Nancy Savoca.
First Exposure Films – (please visit here, for First Exposure descriptions)
First Exposure also includes a 60th Anniversary Tribute to Morris Engel’s The Little Fugitive, a cinema vérité classic from 1953 that was shot on Coney Island and has inspired countless filmmakers, from Jean-Luc Godard to the Coen brothers. The tribute included a panel hosted by film historian Foster Hirsch including Mary Engel, daughter of Morris Engel and Ruth Orkin, and James Sanders, author of Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies. In addition there was a Special Presentation of Everardo Gout’s thrillingly over-the-top action thriller Days Of Grace (Dĺas De Gracia), which won the Mexican Academy of Film’s prestigious Ariel Award for Best First Feature and was nominated for the Camera d’Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
First Time Fest included a series of panels called “How They Did It,” in which a diverse group of award-winning filmmakers moderated filmmaking case studies and spotlighted some of the most successful and accomplished masters of the industry.
First Time Fest is a four-day, multi-faceted event hosted in New York City’s Gramercy Park by the celebrated Players (16 Gramercy Park South), the club founded by Edwin Booth, Mark Twain and John Singer Sargent, the oldest and most exclusive arts organization of its kind whose membership includes the greatest stars of stage and screen. Each of First Time Fest’s twelve finalists receive high-level industry mentorship and a one-year membership to The Players. The Players was the location for all Ftf panels and events as well as the Filmmaker and VIP Lounge. First Time Fest’s screenings were all held at the Loews Village VII on Third Avenue (on 11th St. & 3rd Ave).
Among the Fest’s terrific sponsors is the delicious Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte. "The forward-thinking Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte draws its inspiration from the call of ‘faraway lands.’ One of the youngest and most fashionable Champagne brands, Nicolas Feuillatte has captured the world's imagination by sharing its passion for creativity and arts in a record 37 years, becoming the #1 Champagne in France. In its role as discoverer of talent, the brand awards its prestige cuvée Palmes d'Or to First Time Fest's winners to complement the celebration in style."
Other terrific sponsors of the fest include Brooklyn Brewery, Moscot, Marquis Vodka and Technicolor Postworks.

This was an interesting new roll out of an upcoming NYC based Festival event . This announcement party was held in one of my favorite areas of Manhattan, Gramercy Park - and not far from the Hospital where I was born - NYC's Beth Israel. But seeing Tony Bennett in person was special. His daughter Johanna Bennett, an accomplished philanthropist, actor and social entrepreneur, is organizing this new Festival. Tony is a trim nice looking 85 year old - and who has not loved his singing??
Seeing him personally stirred some emotions in me I could not recall until almost a day later. It was this - When I was 7 or so many years ago my family summered in New Jersey and one night we were all on Atlantic City's Steel Pier to hear him, Tony Bennett, sing. My cousin was as usual beating me up and I remember I was crying disconsolately in a public lounge area sitting on a couch. Suddenly a man put his arms across my shoulders and said to me, 'Peter it is going to be alright, everything will be okay'. I looked up and it was Tony Bennett the great singer comforting me, he had asked my family what was wrong and my mother told him and also my my name. So now I only remembered this much later after the Fest party and I only wished that when I saw the great man that I had thanked him personally for helping a little guy so many years ago .... And oh yes i stopped crying then too...
First Time Fest, a celebration of first time filmmakers, is a new and unique film festival, event and opportunity taking place in New York City from March 1-March 4, 2013.
First Time Fest’s mission is to discover and present the next generation of great cinema by first time screenwriters, producers, directors, editors, composers and cinematographers to a cinema-loving public and to select and present these films and filmmakers in a most unique and dynamic fashion. Ftf is currently seeking submissions for its inaugural event.
First Time Fest will be a four-day, multi-faceted event based in New York City’s Gramercy Park at the celebrated Players Club, founded by Edwin Booth and Mark Twain, the oldest and most exclusive arts organization of its kind. Films will be screened at the Loews Village VII (on 11th St. & 3rd Ave).
First Time Fest represents a hybrid between a traditional film festival and a highly motivated audience participation event. The featured films of First Time Fest will embody the work of 12 finalists, selected from a submission pool of potentially thousands of films. Each of the 12 finalists will have his or her feature screened during the Festival before an audience of industry professionals and the general public. A panel of five jurors will then decide the Grand Prize winner. Four of these judges will be of the film industry elite, while the fifth judge, unlike any other festival in the world, will be the collective “Voting Public” or "VPs." These VPs – 120 on each of the Festival’s days – will be selected by lottery from the thousands of moviegoers expected to attend First Time Fest. Additionally, 12 special VPs will be selected in a nationwide contest to represent the country at large.
The Grand Prize winner of First Time Fest will be presented at an exclusive gala on the final day of the Festival, and will receive an offer of theatrical distribution arranged through a partnership between First Time Fest and Cinema Libre Studio, a successful international entertainment company based in Los Angeles, California. Cinema Libre has produced over 15 award-winning international films, and has distributed more than 100 films in its 20 years of operations. Beyond distribution, the winner will be provided international sales representation by Cinema Libre and will receive a host of other major prizes. First Time Fest will also present other prizes during the Awards Ceremony, including: “Outstanding Direction,” Outstanding Screenplay,” “Outstanding Cinematography,” “Outstanding Editing,” and “Outstanding Score.”
Each of First Time Fest’s twelve finalists will receive a one-year, high-level industry mentorship. This mentorship will involve regular contact with prominent members of the independent filmmaking community: producers, distributors, sales agents, talent representatives (agents and managers), lawyers, consultants, and, most importantly, respected cinema artists: directors, writers, editors, cinematographers and composers. First Time Fest deeply believes in the artistic and professional development of its participants, and will coordinate these intensive mentorship opportunities on their behalf. And, as each finalist is granted a one-year membership at the Player’s Club, they also have a fantastic opportunity to regularly interact with the Player’s entertainment industry members.
First Time Fest will also include a series of panels called “How They Did It,” in which a diverse group of award-winning filmmakers will moderate filmmaking case studies which spotlight some of the most successful and accomplished masters of the industry.
In addition, First Time Fest and the Players Club will be presenting the first John Huston Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Cinema. The Award will be presented to an individual who has made s significant contribution to the art of cinema, and whose presence in our community has offered leadership and inspiration to other cinema artists. The Award is named in honor of one of America’s greatest filmmakers, who was an esteemed member of the Players Club (John Huston’s membership in the Club was sponsored by his friend and colleague, Humphrey Bogart). It will be an extraordinary event.
They will also be celebrating the 60th anniversary of Morris Engel’s The Little Fugitive. This film, a cinema vérité classic from 1953, was shot entirely on Coney Island and has inspired countless filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese, François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, who credit it for launching the French New Wave. Unfortunately, few members of the public (and even many filmmakers) know of Engel’s work, and we hope that this tribute curated by renowned film historian Foster Hirsch, along with a panel to scheduled to include his daughter Mary Engel, and the star of the film, Richard Brewster, will redress that..
Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward serve as co-founders of First Time Fest. Johanna has immersed herself within the entertainment and artistic community her entire life. Mandy has worked in the film industry for nearly 10 years in varied capacities, namely as a film producer of several projects. David Schwartz, the Artistic Director and Head Curator of Museum of the Moving Image, has come on to become the Director of Programing for First Time Fest.

Werner Herzog is the kind of daring director who shoots his documentaries ("Encounters at the End of the World," "Grizzly Man," "Little Dieter Needs to Fly") like narrative films and his narrative films ("Rescue Dawn," "Fitzcarraldo," "Aguirre: The Wrath of God") like documentaries. Forever chasing what he calls "ecstatic truth," Herzog shoots fast, captures only what he needs, and incorporates locals. He dislikes rehearsing and refuses to storyboard ("It's an instrument for the cowards who don't trust in their imagination"). So when Herzog cast the glamorous Eva Mendes as the prostitute-love interest in his refreshingly hilarious take on the tired cop genre, "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," he was not so welcoming with the demands made by her business manager, agent, and attorney. "She was apologetic and said, 'Yeah, they demand the star treatment.' I said to her, 'Eva, nobody in my film is going to be a star.

Already sitting pretty with the year's biggest hit "Men in Black", Sony stirs up a far nastier nest of bugs in the long-awaited "Starship Troopers", unquestionably the year's most violent mainstream film in terms of raw body count and scenes of carnage.
Young and frisky stars, outstanding special effects and an exciting if episodic story line should help counter initial hesitation by moviegoers and result in a very big opening and solid theatrical runs here and abroad.
It took two studios and an army of filmmakers to bring Robert A. Heinlein's classic 1959 science fiction novel to life, and it seems like a smart gamble given director Paul Verhoeven's reputation for stylish sci-fi movies ("RoboCop", "Total Recall") and the public's appetite for epic warfare not seen on this scale since "Independence Day."
With much of Heinlein's controversial political agenda intact, Verhoeven on the rebound from the hyped-to-death "Showgirls", plays another sly game, pouring on the mayhem and "fascist utopia" rhetoric with a few clues hinting that humans will some day pay for being just as ruthless predators as the killer arachnids that are bombarding Earth with asteroids from their distant solar system.
Commencing with a segment from the Federal Network, a future media outlet geared toward inciting human hatred of the insect enemy and recruiting young warriors to fight in an invasion of the alien planet, "Starship Troopers" quickly backtracks into a nearly hourlong buildup to showing the disastrous results of that invasion.
Often silly and contrived, the first half of the film picks up after a slow start, when the ensemble cast goes in for mobile infantry and spaceship-pilot training. First seen as platonic sweethearts in a Buenos Aires school, Johnny Rico Casper Van Dien) and Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards) are pledged to each other, but he's hotly pursued by his indoor-football teammate Dizzy (Dina Meyer), while his supposed true love develops an interest in a space fleet-bound stud (Patrick Muldoon).
Against the wishes of his "civilian" parents, Rico follows his heart and volunteers with Carmen, Dizzy and their brainy friend Carl Neil Patrick Harris) for Federal Service and the honor of "citizenship." Almost immediately, the group is broken up, with Carmen heading to the Fleet Academy and training on interstellar attack ships, while Carl goes into military intelligence and Rico ends up in the Mobile Infantry.
Inspired once upon a time by his no-nonsense teacher (Michael Ironside), Rico is in for a hard time as he loses ambitious Carmen and won't warm up to the all-too-willing Dizzy, who transfers to his unit.
By this point, one is starting to grow impatient for the promised warfare and on cue the bugs drop a big rock on Buenos Aires and the real action begins.
And quite a show it is when it comes down to fighting for survival against mindless creatures on stark, unfriendly planets -- from the huge Tanker Bugs firing blasts of plasma into space to battle scenes of such ferocity and gruesome fascination that potent repeat business is guaranteed.
Two sequences before the climax are so terrific they overshadow what follows. Having survived several encounters with the foe, the ground troops under the command of Ironside's character are ambushed at a compound and must fight off a horde of flying, burrowing giant spiderlike insects in an Alamo-like last stand. Also a knockout is a titanic space battle, when the ship piloted by Carmen and Muldoon's character breaks apart and they escape just in time.
Without question the production is a major achievement for all involved. With some 500-plus effects shots, many of which are incredibly intricate, "Starship Troopers" is masterfully conceived and executed.
