There are a lot of firsts associated with Mc Sha-Rock, hip-hop's "mother of the mic." The Bronx, NY, native is the first female Mc in hip-hop history and the first to sign a record deal; the first woman to battle rap; and she was among the first to spit hip-hop rhymes on national television (appearing on "Saturday Night Live" in 1981 when she was pregnant with her first child). The original member of Funky 4, which later became the Funky 4 + 1, didn't just contribute to the history of women in hip-hop - she's the blueprint.
Despite her pioneering efforts in the '70s, Sha-Rock, born Sharon Green, has hardly been given her just due as a hip-hop trailblazer. The "That's the Joint" rapper also says she was never properly compensated for her music in her '80s heyday, as she, along with other hip-hop pioneers, later sued her former label Sugar Hill Records...

Allie Fox and his family won't find what they're looking for, at least on Apple TV+. The streaming service has cancelled The Mosquito Coast TV series after 17 episodes, and there won't be a third season.

When we first see Andrea Bautista on screen in The Mosquito Coast, it's at a sophisticated soiree where deadly henchman William Lee (Ian Hart) warns the show's protagonist Allie Fox (Justin Thoreaux) that the Bautista family is going to be a problem if they're seen.
The enigma of Andrea Bautista grows as we don't see or hear from her except a single long shot, but she's definitely someone to be reckoned with.
"That's definitely one of the goals of this character," said Andrea's actor, Cosima Cabrera. "She's super confident; she's super badass; she's super in control."
TV Fanatic had a chance to do a Zoom interview with Cabrera ahead of her midseason debut in the Mosquito Coast. She made her first appearance on December 2.
Her character is a Harvard-educated member of a family dynasty who tries to steer them in a legitimate direction while retaining their power.

Chicago – What does one of the biggest stars in Mexican television do when he needs another world to conquer, and a crossover to the American market? He directs his first feature film. Eugenio Derbez, often called a “One-Man Monty Python” in Mexico, debuts as a director in “Instructions Not Included.”
The film is a comic twist on “Kramer vs. Kramer.” The world of a flighty playboy (Derbez in the lead role) is turned upside down when his daughter is left by the birth mother on his doorstep. The character now has to navigate the rough roads of fatherhood and single parenting, while trying to maintain a standard of living in the jungles of Los Angeles.

A slow-motion car crash of miscalculated charisma, BuzzKill lives and rapidly dies by Daniel Raymont’s grating lead performance. As a struggling screenwriter nearing the end of the line, he’s a man in desperate straits: A former tenant recently died in his apartment, there’s a rotting animal moldering in the walls, and his agent thinks he should give up on his ultra-depressing labor of love and try writing something called Black Santa. Viewers who haven’t already tuned out may recognize the agent’s voice as that of Martin Short in Jiminy Glick mode; Short is one of ...

New feature that I tried out last week and which I plan on continuing into the future: Check Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s Facebook page tomorrow (Monday) to see which link got the most clicks.
The L.A. Times published an in-depth profile of filmmaker Nicholas McCarthy about his struggles in trying to get a feature film going. A coda that happened post article publication: McCarthy’s The Pact just got picked up for distribution by IFC Midnight after a few successful Sundance screenings. I remember reviewing the short film version of The Pact about a year ago…Speaking of Sundance, if you want an awesome “boots on the ground” report on what attending the festival is actually like, you have to scroll through donna k.’s tons of film reviews and photo posts about her adventures there. I’ve avoided all other Sundance coverage except hers.

Read our exclusive interview with actor Larry Hankin, who portrays Granger in the new comedy ‘Buzz Kill.’ The film, which was written and directed by Stephen Kampmann, follows a once promising screenwriter, Ray Wyatt (played by Daniel Raymont), who refuses to get a job in advertising just to please his wife Sara (portrayed by Reiko Aylesworth), and moves into a run-down apartment as a result. His new landlord, Granger, hassles him for money, and is reluctant to fix the problems that plague the apartment. Ray’s future improves when an L.A. producer wants to meet with him to discuss his new screenplay, ‘Great Shame.’ Having little travel money, Ray allows a...

Title: Buzz Kill Director: Steven Kampmann (‘Stealing Home’) Starring: Daniel Raymont (TV’s ‘The Naked Brothers Band,’ ‘Smash’), Krysten Ritter (TV’s ‘Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23′) and Darrell Hammond People sometimes take drastic measure when trying to achieve their dreams, and surprisingly, through twists of fate, the acts can actually pay off. The new independent comedy ‘Buzz Kill,’ directed and co-written by actor Steven Kampmann, amusingly shows the extreme measure people take to carry out their professional goals. While those around down-on-his-luck Ray Wyatt view him as being immature and refusing to grow up, Ray thinks of himself as staying true to his dreams. ‘Buzz Kill’ follows Ray (played...

Here is the trailer and two posters for upcoming drama film The Good Heart, which stars Brian Cox (Adaptation., Troy, Zodiac, The Escapist) and Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine).
Brian Cox stars as Jacques, the curmudgeonly owner of a gritty New York dive bar that serves as home to a motley assortment of professional drinkers. Jacques is determinedly drinking and smoking himself to death when he meets Lucas (Paul Dano), a homeless young man who has already given up on life. In the hopes of keeping his legacy alive, Jacques deems Lucas is a fitting heir and takes him under his wing, schooling him in the male—centric laws of his alcoholic clubhouse: no new customers, no fraternizing with customers and, absolutely no women. Lucas is a quick study, but their friendship is put to the test when the distraught and beautiful April (Isild Le Besco...
