The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

Fox Searchlight topped the film studios with six nominations, led by Alexander Gonzales Inarritu’s Birdman, which nabbed four total nominations: for Outstanding Cast, which is the closest thing the guild has to a Best Picture category; and for star Michael Keaton and supporting actors Edward Norton and Emma Stone. It was joined in the top cast category by IFC Films’ Boyhood, which also got nods for its co-stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette; Searchlight’s Wes Anderson pic The Grand Budapest Hotel; the Weinstein Co’s The Imitation Game; and Focus Features’ The Theory Of Everything. When a television series has run past its prime, which some may argue Homeland has, the writers have to work extra hard to convince viewers to stick around for another season. After the Carrie-Brody dynamic brought the intrigue down for most of season three, the quality of the Emmy-winning thriller shot back up when the characters reunited for the final few hours of that season. Without Damian Lewis around, though, Homeland’s supporting cast has had to pick up the weight.
For the most part, the ensemble has fared well. However, as the show continues on the way to its fifth season (and perhaps beyond, this being a Showtime series), one hopes the supporting cast gets more to do. That task may be a bit more difficult considering how Carrie and Saul’s relationship – one that did not get much screen time earlier this fall – finally came to the fore in the past few episodes.

Alert: Spoilers ahead! Twists abounded in this week’s episode of Homeland: Among other things, Carrie teamed up with onetime CIA adversary John Redmond (Michael O’Keefe). But the biggest surprise for O’Keefe is that he’s still acting 35 years after earning an Oscar nomination for 1979’s The Great Santini. “I’m still very grateful that I make my living as an actor — it’s all I set out to do when I was young,” he tells Vulture. O’Keefe shared some of his favorite showbiz memories, including stories about his roles in Caddyshack and opposite Jack Nicholson and George Clooney. How would you characterize Redmond’s relationship with Carrie? They started out at loggerheads, but now that’s evolving. When she showed up, he saw her as competition, which is understandable. He is from an entirely different generation, works differently, and was trained differently from her. They don’t have different goals,...

Homeland, Season 4, Episode 5, “About A Boy”
Written by Meredith Stiehm
Directed by Charlotte Sieling
Airs Sundays at 9pm on Showtime
“I’m a spy. I know shit.”
That line, spoken by John Redmond, is funny in the moment, but begins to feel ironic by the end of the episode. Practically everyone is off their game this week, with an abundance of questionable decisions leading to Saul getting kidnapped. By this point, we’ve spent plenty of time with Carrie, Saul, Quinn, even Fara. We know what they can do, we know how good they are at their jobs…except when the writers need them to be stupid. It all feels overly telegraphed, to the point where these uncharacteristic decisions not only frustrate on a plot level, but a character one too. It’s reminiscent of how a show like Family Guy treats its characters and its continuity, which is an...

Homeland, Season 4, Episode 4, “Iron in the Fire”
Written by Patrick Harbinson
Directed by Michael Offer
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on Showtime
There are several reminders in this episode about how good Carrie is at her job, as if the writers are making sure we have the right perspective on her character before the episode’s final scene. Fara tells Quinn when he arrives, “I don’t know how she finds time to sleep.” Later, the guy John Redmond had tailing Carrie last episode (and failing) tells John, simply, “She’s good.” Considering the fact that we’ve seen Carrie often at her worst, it is valuable to remember what a good agent she is. Which brings us to that final scene.
Much of the hour is spent building up the tension between Quinn and Carrie, which is apparently meant to be read as sexual tension. To the writers’ credit,...

When Homeland returns to television this fall, fans of the Showtime political thriller will have to come to terms with a dramatically transformed show. Brody (Damian Lewis) is dead and gone, his wife Jessica (Morena Baccarin) and children Dana (Morgan Saylor) and Chris (Jackson Pace) are no longer part of the show, and protagonist Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), heavily pregnant with Brody’s child, has become the CIA’s station chief in Istanbul. Even Saul (Mandy Patinkin) is facing changes, now that he’s been fired from the CIA.
Luckily, there will be a host of newcomers to help Homeland get its momentum going again. Following the additions of Laila Robins (as a series regular), Corey Stoll (as a recurring guest star) and Suraj Sharma (in a heavily recurring role), Homeland has landed Raza Jaffrey and Michael O’Keefe for its fourth season.

Australian rocker Nick Cave can now add doctor to his resume, after receiving an honorary degree from his old university.
The Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds frontman returned to his alma mater, the University of Monash, in Melbourne, Australia on Friday, where he was presented with the Doctor of Laws honour.
The 50-year-old studied for a Diploma of Art and Design at the university in his early 20s, but abandoned his academic studies to pursue a career in music.
But at the presentation ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard hailed Cave as one of Australia's most successful and prominent artists.
He told audience members, "Nick Cave's substantial achievements in the creative arts and in raising Australia's profile internationally make him a worthy candidate for recognition by Monash University.
"In addition to his musical contributions, Nick Cave has shown an outstanding ability to contribute to writing and acting - he is truly an extraordinary creative talent."
John Redmond, the Dean of the Faculty of Art + Design, added: "The Faculty of Art + Design is a community that fosters student creativity and inquiry and, as Nick Cave shows, encourages experimentation and excellence in many artistic spheres.
"I am delighted that we can call Nick Cave a Monash graduate."...
