Saoirse Ronan and Paapa Essiedu star in Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun which is heading to cinemas in September.
Two years ago, we reported that Saoirse Ronan was due to star in The Outrun, Nora Fingscheidt’s drama based on Amy Liptrot’s memoir. This was before Ronan featured on not one, but two of our magazine covers with her films See How They Run and Foe.
Well, after a long wait, The Outrun is now almost upon us! Studio Canal have today announced that the film is heading to UK and Irish cinemas 27 September.
The Outrun had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival and later screened at Berlin International Film Festival to much acclaim. “We had a lot of fun in Istanbul because it was the opening of the season” declares Oscar-nominated cinematographer Danny Cohen (“The King’s Speech”) about the acclaimed third season of the Apple TV+ spy drama “Slow Horses.” It opens in the Turkish city, but then soon finds itself back in the decidedly unglamorous Slough House, the MI5 office reserved for the outcasts and misfits of the British intelligence agency. For our recent webchat he adds with a smile, “you instantly have the idea to sell the audience a complete red herring that they’re going on some sort of ‘James Bond’ travelogue. See the world, travel the globe, beaches, interesting cities, and then to use that as a hook to then drag everybody back to the well-worn interiors of Slough House.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“Outwardly, he gives the impression that he doesn’t care very much,” Gary Oldman recently said about portraying a disgraced MI5 agent on the acclaimed AppleTV+ spy drama “Slow Horses,” explaining that underneath his disheveled exterior, there’s so much more to the man than what meets the eye. “He’s unkempt, and he uses it to play a game. It’s a defense mechanism, and I would say he cares a lot more than most.”
Oldman is mesmerizing in “Slow Horses” as the aloof and often contemptuous Jackson Lamb. He’s a pariah living out his twilight days as the begrudging leader of a group of fellow outcasts to whom he is almost comically obnoxious and offensive. He is truly captivating every time he’s on screen. So, a brilliant performance deserves a brilliant Emmy campaign. This Dune article contains spoilers.
If the shocking ending of Dune: Part Two left you wanting more, you can actually watch Dune: Part Three right now. Kind of. Although Denis Villeneuve hasn’t fully committed to a movie adaptation of Dune Messiah, there is an often overlooked filmed version of this Dune sequel out there right now. This isn’t a bootleg or a fan film either, but The Sci-Fi Channel’s excellent Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune miniseries. This very real adaptation of Dune Messiah even stars several major Hollywood stars, including James McAvoy and Susan Sarandon, as well as Star Trek legend Alice “The Borg Queen” Krige.
If you’ve slept on this particular Dune sequel, now is possibly the best time to watch it. Here’s what to know about Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune, why it’s great, and how to watch it.

The company’s debut feature, “The Outrun,” is set to have its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival next week. The film world premiered at Sundance last month.
Lowden, who’s currently starring in “Slow Horses,” set up Arcade Pictures in 2019 alongside “Modern Life is Rubbish” producer Dominic Norris, who will stay on at the company.
“Little Women” star Ronan joined as a company director in 2021.
In 2022 Arcade Pictures unveiled its first major feature film project, an adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s addiction memoir “The Outrun” directed by Nora Fingscheidt.

“The Outrun,” the story of a 29-year-old Scottish woman in the throes of, and recovery from (though not necessarily in that order), an increasingly desperate alcoholism, is a drama with a lot of things going for it. It stars Saoirse Ronan, a great actor who, no one will be surprised to hear, lives inside this role as if she’d occupied it her whole life. The film is based on Amy Liptrot’s 2017 addiction memoir (the heroine is now named Rona), and the German director Nora Fingscheidt (“System Crasher”) adapts it in a somber, meditative, structurally free-form way that’s all about broken surfaces and moods of fragmentation and despair (and mutating dyed hair).
Much of the movie is set on the Orkney Islands, a remote archipelago located in the Northern Isles of Scotland and steeped in folklore. This gorgeously severe landscape — the black rocks, the waves, the end-of-the-earth barrenness...

Maybe the smartest decision made in The Outrun, directed by Nora Fingscheidt, is its fractured narrative device. Based on the 2016 memoir of the same name by Amy Liptrot (co-writing with Fingscheidt), the film offers a frank, unwavering look at addiction with the great Saoirse Ronan (who also produces) in the lead role. We move forward and backward in time, often relieved to be clear from horrible sins of the past only to be thrust back into them minutes later. In this way, the picture reflects its subject with painful precision.
Rona, recently sober and just out of rehab, has returned to her hometown in the Orkney Islands, a remote archipelago off the coast of Scotland. Following a degree in biology and complicated metropolitan life in London, she finds herself back in her mother’s house. Her father lives nearby in a trailer on a farm he (sometimes) runs. His struggles...

Floating 10 miles beyond the tip of Great Britain like a barren moon that’s been anchored to the rest of the world by a rusty chain running beneath the North Sea, the Orkney Islands are a place so primordial and extreme that even the scientists who live there fall back on folklore to explain it. Maybe the silent tremors that vibrate through the land are caused by the impact of ocean water crashing into underwater caves — but it seems just as plausible that they might be produced by a buried dragon the size of the entire world unfurling its massive tail. Maybe the poor souls who drown off the coast are truly lost and gone forever, but on this blustery archipelago — where the winter breeze can only be measured in scenes from “King Lear” — it doesn’t seem too far-fetched to believe that the dead turn into adorable selkies who...

As always Slow Horses isn’t your typical spy thriller because its characters and stories are as far from James Bond as they could be, and in my opinion, that’s what made Slow Horses one of the best espionage thriller ever made.

Jobs can suck. If you’re past 25, you’ve probably had one that left you feeling like a three-legged whippet abandoned at the pound. Maybe everything was grand, and then there was a regime change, and the new boss won’t talk to you. Then you get demoted after getting blamed for something that was really Dilbert No. 8’s fault. Your sense of self-worth nosedives, and you must seek out a therapist who is not in your network. You wander the streets looking up “gaslighting” on your phone and wondering if it is you who sucks.
This is pretty much the setup for Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” which begins its delightfully grim third season on Wednesday. Ok, there’s a lot of intrigue and gunfire, but at its core it is the tale of precariously employed worker drones making their way through a broken workplace led by a flatulent...

In theory, Slow Horses should not work as an ongoing series, whether in the books by Mick Herron or the Apple TV+ show that returns for its third season today. The stories involve a group of disgraced British spies, consigned to a dingy office where they’re not meant to do any important work, but who keep stumbling into major cases, and acquit themselves well doing so. Once seems like a fine idea for a story. But two? Three? Or, in the case of the books, eight? At a certain point,...

Slow Horses is back with its much-awaited third season, and I am happy to say that it is even better than what came before. The Gary Oldman dark comedy-drama has to be one of the best TV shows in the entire world, but sadly it is still not getting the attention it deserves.
Based on the third novel of the Slough House book series titled Real Tigers by Mick Herron, the new season starts in Istanbul with Alison Dunn (Katherine Waterston), an MI5 agent, and Sean Donovan (Sope Dirisu), head of security. The relationship between these two sets up the events for the upcoming episodes and while we don’t see the Slow Horses in the opening scene, they get caught up in this new mess pretty soon.

Apple TV+ is shifting up its rollout strategy for Slow Horses Season 3, and it means we'll be getting new episodes sooner.
As revealed Tuesday morning, the highly-anticipated next chapter of the Gary Oldman drama will now premiere on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.
It was previously revealed that new episodes would air beginning December 1, 2023, so we're getting them two days earlier.
Apple TV+ has been experimenting with rolling out shows earlier in the week, and it worked very well for Ted Lasso Season 3, so we're inclined to believe this will be a good thing for this hit drama series.
We also got our first look at Slow Horses Season 3 today, with Apple TV+ sharing the official trailer.
If there's one thing we know about Slow Horses, it's that the series features a lot of talented individuals, and that will continue.
The next chapter is adapted from "Real Tigers," the third novel in...

When Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) is kidnapped by rogue MI5 agents, it’s up to her fellow Slow Horse agents to save her in the first trailer for Season 3 of “Slow Horses.”
Apple TV+ released the preview on Tuesday for the British spy show, which returns with the first two episodes of Season 3 on Nov. 29. A new episode premieres every Wednesday through Dec. 27.
“I need a team of good agents, but I just have the Slow Horses,” laments slovenly senior agent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who never misses a chance to crack wise, even when lives are on the line.
Later in the clip, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) calls from a besieged warehouse to tell Lamb, “There are men outside with guns. Some backup might be handy.”
Lamb’s nonchalant reply, “Well, I’m busy.”
Responds a frustrated Cartwright, “Ok, thanks, I’m sure the situation will resolve itself.”

This week’s guest is Gary Oldman.
Right now, he’s starring in Apple TV+ series Slow Horses‘ as Jackson Lamb, leader of a group of MI5 rejects exiled to a rundown London building known as Slough House. As Oldman describes it, “It’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy meets The Office.”
Having just wrapped Season 3, the cast are headed into production on Season 4, and Oldman, an Oscar-winning 40-year veteran of stage and screen, says he’s loving playing Jackson Lamb—a flatulent, unwashed genius of espionage. He also hints at what we can expect from Slow Horses‘ next season: He and co-star Saskia Reeves will have “a real scorcher of a scene”.
Next up, Oldman will reunite with Harry Truman in Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer
During this chat, Oldman also recalls how he first began spontaneously practicing monologues at age 13, before working as a hospital porter “mopping up blood...

Luther: The Fallen Sun, the first movie adventure for Idris Elba’s morally (and fashionably) grey detective, follows up five series’ worth of shenanigans in the successful BBC TV thriller. That’s a lot of murder, character development and shocking moments. The Fallen Sun has been designed to work as a standalone story as well as a continuation of the show, but with a world this complex, context is everything.
So, if you want to refresh your memory so you’re ready to catch all of The Fallen Sun’s cheeky references, or even if you’re new to the world of Luther and want to find out how we got to this point, here’s a handy primer on the story so far…
Alice Enters the (Crime) Scene

“Gangs of London” star Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù has joined the third season of Apple TV+’s British spy series “Slow Horses” as an ex-security boss, Variety can reveal.
Dìrísù is set to play Sean Donovan, the former head of security at the British embassy in Istanbul, in the show, which is based on best-selling author Mick Herron’s “Slow Horses” books.
“Slow Horses” sees Gary Oldman bring to life Herron’s slobby anti-hero Jackson Lamb, who leads a gang of misfit MI5 operatives demoted to Slough House after making career-ending mistakes. Season 3 will see the team having to overcome their differences and work together when one of their members if kidnapped by a rogue agent.
In the third instalment of Herron’s literary series, titled “Real Tigers,” Donovan is also revealed to have a romantic link to one of the main ensemble, although it’s unknown how closely the screen adaptation will follow the books.
