The podcast version of “Archive 81” had to sculpt an entire world out of just dialogue, music, sound effects, and the occasional agonizing bit of silence, but the Netflix series adaptation uses its sound design as just one of the many tools with which to create its world. The TV adaptation’s sounds have the luxury of lurking beneath the strange occurrences at the Visser Apartments in the 1990s, captured first by grad student Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) and then decades later by archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), as he restores her tapes. Supervising sound editor Mark Relyea talked to IndieWire about “Archive 81” and its soundscape — including spoilers for the end of the show’s first season.

Millennium Media has hired Ryan Svendsen as its Head of Music. He comes over from Lionsgate, where he was Director, Film and TV Music and worked on music for La La Land, Nashville and The Hunger Games movies.
In his new role he will oversee music strategy and development for Millennium Media’s slate that currently includes the sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard; the Tanya Wexler-directed Jolt; and Tesla, the biopic of inventor Nikola Tesla starring Ethan Hawke.
Svendsen, a musician who has worked on songs for Shawn Mendes, Christina Aguilera, Demi Lovato and Jon Bellion, worked at UTA and Azoff Music Management before joining Lionsgate. He will now report to Millennium president Jeffrey Greenstein and co-president Jonathan Yunger.

With one week before the Academy Awards, "Birdman" continues its triumphant march towards Oscar glory. Just this past weekend, the Alejandro González Iñárritu contender won the top awards at the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) awards, the 62nd Sound Editors' Golden Reel, and the 51st Cinema Audio Society. Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
