Well, I know what song is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day. First reported by The Insneider, Jennifer Aniston is producing a reimagining of 9 to 5 for 20th Century Studios. The iconic 1980 movie starred Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Jane Fonda as three women who join forces to take revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss. Of course, the movie also featured the iconic theme song written and performed by Parton, which became one of the biggest hits of the decade.
Jennifer Aniston will produce the 9 to 5 reimagining through her Echo Films banner, along with her partner Kristin Hahn. Lisa Frankenstein screenwriter Diablo Cody will pen the script for the project, and although plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s assumed it will more or less follow the beats of the original.

Jennifer Aniston’s production company, Echo Films, are to reimagine classic comedy 9 to 5 for a modern day audience, according to reports first covered by The Insneider. The script is being written by Juno and Young Adult writer Diablo Cody.
No plot details have yet been revealed, but the 1980 original centred on three female colleagues in an office who team up to take revenge on their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Dabney Coleman starred in the film, which was scripted by Patricia Resnick with Colin Higgins, who also directed. It was based on an idea by Fonda, who commissioned the film as a vehicle for herself and Tomlin before bringing Parton on board.

The icons have arrived on the SAG-AFTRA picket lines.
On day five of the actors strike, award-winning actresses Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin attended the strike at Netflix. Last month, Fonda and Tomlin also appeared on the picket lines in support of the Writers Guild of America.
As an industry veteran who has worked with many of the top industry execs through her career (and was once married to media mogul Ted Turner), Fonda implored the studio heads to see reason. “I think that they need to listen to us,” the 80 for Brady star told The Hollywood Reporter. “They have to agree to come back to the negotiating table and be reasonable, because what we’re asking for is reasonable. Their refusal to negotiate these things is really bad.”
Frequent collaborators and longtime friends, Fonda and Tomlin drew a crowd as they walked up and down Sunset Boulevard with their fellow union members.

The Writers Guild of America strike continued Thursday with a demonstration at Netflix headquarters in Los Angeles that featured appearances by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, as well as a slew of Dolly Parton drag queens on the picket lines.
The event, put on by the WGA’s LGBTQ+ writers committee, was titled “Striking 9-5 Picket — A Dolly Drag Event.” Fonda, Tomlin and the real-life Parton starred in the 1980 comedy that scored an Oscar nomination for Parton’s chart-topping title song. The picket was organized by the film’s screenwriter Patricia Resnick, who also attended and spoke to the crowd that swelled to more than 400.

Jane Fonda is hoping a screenwriter is working longer than nine-to-five on a sequel script.
The “80 for Brady” star revealed that there is still hope for a “9 to 5” sequel co-starring Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton more than 40 years since the original 1980 film debuted. “9 to 5” was a groundbreaking comedy that addressed workplace sexism and harassment, plus gave the culture Parton’s iconic song of the same name. Last year’s documentary “Still Working 9 to 5” charted the changes since the film’s debut.
A slated sequel to “9 to 5” was effectively canceled in 2019 due to script delay issues as Rashida Jones was set to co-write the script with original screenwriter Patricia Resnick.
“We haven’t been able to get a script that we were satisfied with,” Fonda recently told Entertainment Tonight. “If you don’t have the script, you can’t start.”

“Still Working 9 to 5” was reviewed by TheWrap out of the 2022 SXSW Film Festival.
Camille Hardman and Gary Lane’s documentary “Still Working 9 to 5” cold-opens with an archival clip of Jane Fonda giving a television interview about “9 to 5,” the 1980 comedy she produced and starred in alongside Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton. As the interviewer presses her about what kind of film to expect from the radical activist, Fonda blurts, “it’s a movie about secretaries fantasizing about murdering their boss,” to which the interviewer responds, “So it’s not a political statement, is it?” This is an assertion that Hardman and Lane will emphatically disprove over the course of the next hour and 40 minutes.
“Still Working 9 to 5” doesn’t innovate or experiment with documentary form: This is a straightforward talking-heads and archival-footage kind of project. But the access to the film’s stars and producers,...

The 1980 comedy hit 9 To 5 came at a crucial turning point for women in the workplace. Star/Producer Jane Fonda explains in the new documentary of its creation and the movement that spawned it, that she and producting partner Bruce Gilbert wanted to do a serious film on the struggle women had endured for decades, but instead decided that to get anyone to pay attention the only way to do it was with laughs. Thus a smash hit comedy was born, initially with a screenplay by Patricia Resnick that as she explained was met with creative differences, and then later saw its problems solved when ironically a man, the late Colin Higgins (Harold And Maude) came in to write and direct the final film.

The final season of "Mad Men" is adding an Oscar winner to its writing staff.
"Chinatown" screenwriter Robert Towne has joined the AMC series as a consulting producer on its seventh and final season, Variety reports. The series has also hired Patricia Resnick ("Nine to Five") as a consulting producer. "Saturday Night Live" and "United States of Tara" veteran David Iserson will be a co-producer.
Additionally, Carly Wray has made the jump from writers' assistant to staff writer for the final season.
Towne wrote a handful of TV scripts very early in his career, including episodes of "The Outer Limits" and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." His last TV work, however, was nearly 50 years ago. In addition to his Oscar win for "Chinatown," he was nominated for Academy Awards for his screenplays for "The Last Detail," "Shampoo" and "Greystoke."

Along with yesterday's news that the seventh and final season of AMC's "Mad Men" will be broken into two seven-episode batches, to unspool over spring 2014 and spring 2015, showrunner Matthew Weiner also announced that veteran screenwriter Robert Towne ("Chinatown") is one of the new additions to the show's writing staff. Towne will be a consulting producer for the show. He won the Original Screenplay Oscar for Roman Polanski's "Chinatown" in 1974, and has been nominated for an additional three screenwriting Oscars -- 1973's "The Last Detail," 1975's "Shampoo" and 1984's "Greystroke: Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes." Patricia Resnick ("Nine to Five") and David Iverson ("Saturday Night Live") have also signed as consulting producers for the next season of "Mad Men." Meanwhile, Matthew Weiner's big-screen directorial debut, "You Are Here," didn't land so well with critics following its premiere at Tiff last week.

It’s not every TV drama that can claim an Oscar-winning screenwriter as a new recruit to its staff, particularly not as it prepares to wind down. But then, not every TV drama is Mad Men, which has just scored Chinatown’s Robert Towne.According to Variety, Towne will be serving as a consulting producer on the final season of the show, which will be split between two seven-episode batches in Spring 2014 and 2015. It would seem that Us cable channel AMC is happy with the boost in ratings garnered by Breaking Bad’s final season split, and wants to make sure its original high calibre drama goes out with a similar bang (add your own Don Draper-inspired pun here, please).Towne, whose CV also includes Oscar nominations for Shampoo, The Last Detail and Greystoke, is not the only cinematic veteran joining head writer Matthew Weiner’s team – Nine To Five...

NBC has added two more projects to its drama development roster hailing from Universal TV and two of its pods: a soapy drama from writer Patricia Resnick (9 To 5) and Scott Stuber‘s Bluegrass TV, and a high-concept drama from up-and-coming writer Moira McMahon and Peter Traugott‘s Tbd Prods. Resnick’s project is described as a semi-autobiographical drama with comedic overtones set around the professional and private lives of the harried staff of a formerly famous novelist suffering from decades-long writer’s block. The hire of an ambitious young writer as the author’s new personal assistant sets off seismic shifts throughout the already unsteady household. Stuber, Quan Phung and Jonathan Baruch executive produce. The project reunites Resnick, repped by Rain Management and Sandy Weinberg, with NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt. In addition to co-writing the 1980 movie 9 To 5 starring Dolly Parton, she also co-wrote with Parton the Broadway musical, which was produced by Greenblatt.

Variety is reporting that the trust representing the late writer-director Colin Higgins has sued attorney Barry Hirsch for failing to properly represent his interests in the "9 to 5" stage musical. Colin Higgins Prods. filed suit on Jan. 14 against Hirsch and his law firm in L.A. County Superior Court, accusing Hirsch of legal malpractice and breach of fiduciary duty. The trust seeks damages to be determined in a jury trial. Among the many charges in the filing reveals Variety include, Hirsch failed to adequately secure Higgins' rights to a live stage show from Patricia Resnick, the original scribe for the movie, and failed to advise the trustee in 2006 that the firm was representing Resnick at the time she was writing the book for "9 to 5: The Musical."...

In 1979, a 26-year-old lesbian screenwriter named Patricia Resnick began working on a story about three pink-collar office workers who kidnap their "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" boss, and secretly take over running their department.
The result was the feature film comedy, Nine to Five – starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and in her film debut, Dolly Parton – which went on to earn over 103 million dollars in the Us alone, making it the second top-grossing film of 1980. Not bad for a film starring three women.
The movie has since become a beloved, iconic example of female solidarity and workplace injustice, with a huge lesbian fan base.
Now, it's making its way to Broadway, as the play, 9 to 5: The Musical, starring Allison Janney, Megan Hilty, and Stephanie Block.
