Films about childhood, aimed at adult viewers, have to speak effectively to memory. Lucy Cohen’s Edge Of Summer is a wonderfully sensual film full of the details that might pull one back into a remembered world: the edge of a lace curtain blowing against the sill. The sunlight on a patch of ceiling. The sharp, clear blue of the sea. One can almost smell the salt air, the bruised grass, the slightly musty odour of a holiday cottage just opened up early in the season. Evie (Flora Hylton) and her mother Yvonne (Josie Walker) were supposed to be going there to get some time together, just the two of them, but the sudden arrival of Tony (Steffan Rhodri), in whom her mother has an obvious sexual interest, crushes that hope. The resulting feelings of betrayal and abandonment are also the kind of things that linger over time.
Evie was still hoping.
Evie was still hoping.

Glasgow film festival: Two young protagonists discover something (but what is it?) in a disused tin mine in Lucy Cohen’s imperfect but atmospheric family psychodrama
Here is a dreamy, drifting film, directed by Lucy Cohen, set on the Cornish coast in the long distant pre-smartphone summer of 1991. It’s unevenly presented sometimes and not everything here works, yet it is interesting for its atmospheric use of location and images, its tonal shifts and a disconnect between the ostensible reality of what’s happening and the feeling that certain parts are a hallucination, a psychopathological symptom of trauma, or a remembered dream.
The scene is a wild and rocky coastline where Yvonne (Josie Walker) has arrived for a restorative break at a rented cottage with her quiet 11-year-old daughter Evie (Flora Hylton); Evie’s dad is not with them and Yvonne is apparently taking a break from her marriage. She has assured shy,...

First of all – is the BBC allowed to air a drama without a detective or a horse-drawn carriage in it? Can somebody check?
Crime and period’s drama dominance isn’t the only modern TV trend bucked by The Way. Actor Michael Sheen’s directorial debut is a wild throwback to the society-falls-apart TV of the past: Threads. The Year of the Sex Olympics. The Guardians. Cold Lazarus… all those wiggy, provocative Nigel Kneale and Dennis Potter stories that aimed for more than just audience share.
Written by Sherwood and Quiz’s James Graham, and co-created with documentary maker Adam Curtis, The Way also aims high – too high for what it’s able to achieve in three episodes, making it much more a curio than a must-see.
The drama imagines a Welsh civil uprising that turns the country into a closed-border police state and its people into persecution-fleeing refugees. It follows the Driscolls,...

After a flurry of reports about a new Christmas special, co-creator Ruth Jones has denied that any new episodes of Gavin and Stacey are in the pipeline.
Yesterday, US entertainment website Deadline reported that Gavin and Stacey was set to return for a Christmas special this year, five years after the last episode aired. The news went viral on social media, lots of places picked up on it and, despite no official confirmation from either the BBC or creators Ruth Jones and James Corden, fans have been clamouring for more information.
Sadly, Jones has poured cold water on the speculation. Without fully dismissing the possibility of a reunion, she said it was “sadly a rumour”.
Speaking to Irish station Rte Radio 1, she added: “All I can say is, if there was something to say on that front, [co-creator] James [Corden] and I would happily announce it, we would.”

Playwright James Graham has teamed up with Michael Sheen for three part BBC drama, The Way. Here’s the trailer.
Michael Sheen has spent a good portion of his career playing real-life figures, perhaps most notably David Frost in Ron Howard’s film version of Peter Morgan’s Frost/Nixon.
He has also played journalist Robbie Ross in Wilde, writer Jeremy Dyson in The League Of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse, Chris Tarrant in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? scandal drama Quiz and he played a heightened version of himself opposite David Tennant in Staged. He’s about to take on the role of Aneurin “Nye” Bevan in Tim Price’s play Nye at the National Theatre. Likewise, James Graham often writes political plays based around recent events.
The two have now teamed up for BBC drama The Way, which although it takes its inspiration from real events, follows fictional characters.
The synopsis reads as follows:

Men Up is a brilliant new dramatic feature that aired on the BBC over Christmas, but is still available to watch on iPlayer. It’s a stirring true story about the rise of viagra in Wales, and manages to find a brilliant tonality, whereby it’s light in parts, yet takes the matter incredibly serious, resulting in a film that studies male mental health in a unique, and important way.
To mark the release of this film, we had the pleasure in speaking to the four leading roles, and below you can find our chats with Iwan Rheon and Paul Rhys, and then with Steffan Rhodri and Phaldut Sharma. If you’ve ever questioned the need for police resources to be spent on decades-old cold cases, Steeltown Murders will leave you in no doubt. Over four episodes, this BBC drama shows how momentous it is for victims and their families to know the truth about a crime, however much time has passed since it was committed.
In 1973, three Welsh teenagers were murdered in Neath and Port Talbot. Sandra Newton, Pauline Floyd and Gwyneth Hughes were picked up hitchhiking after nights out, and then raped, strangled to death and discarded. For almost 30 years, their families and friends lived without knowing who their killer was or whether he walked among them.
Steeltown Murders shows how those three decades were permeated with grief, regret and guilt – not from the killer, whose motivations and reactions this BBC drama studiously ignores – but from the girls’ loved ones, and from the police who initially failed them.

In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.
In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.
Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.

Years before the little blue pill changed the lives for millions across the globe, a group of ordinary middle-aged Welsh men underwent the extraordinary, taking part in one of the first clinical trials for an unknown drug which later became Viagra. This group of men had one thing in common: impotency, and were living their lives drowned in shame and silence before being offered a lifeline.

House of the Dragon’s fifth episode is the most dramatic yet.
Warning – major spoilers for ‘House of the Dragon’ episode five ahead
Prince Daemon’s (Matt Smith) wife is killed, the king’s health appears to be in serious decline and we have a royal wedding on our hands between Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) and Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate).
However, it is the king’s wife, Queen Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey), who steals the show.
In a scene lasting less than 30 seconds, decades of unrest are foreshadowed.

"I don't know who he is, but I know who he's not..." Don't mess with this guy! Sony Pictures / Screen Gems has released a second official trailer (watch the first here) for horror sequel Don't Breathe 2, following up the surprise hit horror Don't Breathe from 2016. It's a "clever, twisted continuation." This one is set in the years following the initial deadly home invasion, where Norman Nordstrom lives in quiet solace until his past sins catch up to him. Stephen Lang returns as Nordstrom, with a cast including Brendan Sexton III, Madelyn Grace, Bobby Schofield, Rocci Williams, Steffan Rhodri, and Stephanie Arcila. This red band trailer is being billed as a "Dark Af" trailer, which is the right way to sell this because Damn. I dig all the intense horror house setups, especially that birds-eye shot of the people walking in. Crazy cool. Here's the second red band trailer (+ poster...

"It's not me you need to be scared of, little girl." Sony Pictures / Screen Gems has debuted the first official trailer for horror sequel Don't Breathe 2, following up the surprise hit horror Don't Breathe from 2016. This is yet another movie delayed from release last year, now set to open in theaters nationwide starting in August this summer. Stephen Lang returns as Nordstrom, with a cast including Brendan Sexton III, Madelyn Grace, Bobby Schofield, Rocci Williams, Steffan Rhodri, and Stephanie Arcila. This looks like it might just be an improvement over the original, getting even more brutal but sticking to the concept. And as always, Lang looks badass taking on everyone himself. In the first trailer for “Dream Horse,” Toni Collette plays an ordinary Welsh woman with aspirations for something greater. So she gathers her community to contribute the money to buy a racing horse and watches her dreams become a reality.
Euros Lyn’s film is based on the true story of Jan Vokes, who successfully bred a champion race horse named Dream Alliance against all odds in coordination with the people in her small town. Vokes convinced her neighbors to contribute 10 quid a week for two years until they could afford it, and their investment paid off big time.
The film premiered at Sundance to acclaim and a few tears of joy, including from Collette herself.
“I’m so proud of you. It seems like anything is possible,” she says to the horse after raising it from a foal.

Isn't it annoying when you love Sci-Fi productions - both cinematic and terrestrial - yet you can't find another person for miles who shares your passion? Similarly, when you find yourself trawling through screens of your favourite animé, talking to people on forums that you wish you could talk to over a cold pint. For that passionate individual things can certainly be toughly - surviving in in a world that doesn't quite understand your Trekkie ways, keeping your mouth shut in public lest someone mock you for your perfectly legitimate fan following...is that even living? I mean come on, if you can't embrace the inner geek then what's the point in filtering so much time into it's viewing?
However, if you are one of these people, then I would like to warmly introduce you to the amazing world of expos and conventions. What better place to go than a hall full of video games,...

I have a confession to make. I am something of a Harry Potter apologist: because of my love of the original books it has often been difficult to see anything but the good things with the film adaptations (and even the later books), but I promise I’ll endeavour to remain as objective as possible here.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One certainly has its flaws- and there were certainly those who will be disappointed- but what it lacks in frenetic pace, it more than makes up for in other areas, including an injection of artfulness that the previous film never seemed able to achieve despite its obvious aspirations. And there is a lot more to be said of the film than the perpetually regurgitated assertion that it is darker than the last film; a lazy critique at best that gives no insight into the merits of the film,...

A very soggy red carpet in Leicester Square squelched underfoot last Thursday, as British acting royalty and young stars who now have the bank balances and empty schedules of actual royalty made their way into the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
The cast and creators of the film were dowsed with intermittent rain and continuous praise during the evening, which was compered by Edith Bowman and Rick Edwards against a soundtrack of five hours of unrelenting screaming.
Proposals of marriage, offers to bear children and shouts of “who are you wearing?” (surely a question that should only rightfully be asked to psychos of the Buffalo Bill variety…) abounded, and as must be the case with every event of this kind, at points...

There are some series that manage to wrap their arms around you and never let go, making you laugh and cry in equal measure. British comedy Gavin & Stacey, which returns to BBC America for its third and final season after way too long of a break, is just one of those series, the sort that makes you laugh and cry in equal measure, filled with characters that you can't get enough of and whom it will be very hard to say goodbye to forever in just a few weeks' time. Revolving around the titular star-crossed lovers, the series--created and written by co-stars James Corden and Ruth Jones--has charted their courtship and marriage over the course of three bittersweet seasons and the reactions of their friends and family to such an unexpected match: Gavin (Mathew Horne) is, after all, an Essex lad while Stacey (Joanna Page) hails from Barry, Wales,...

In J.K. Rowling's last "Harry Potter" novel, there is a sequence where Harry Potter and his two best friends make a trip to the Ministry of Magic and transform into workers. Recently, Steffan Rhodri who will portray Reg Cattermole in two parts of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" has addressed the shooting of the particular scenes, which will take place at Leavesden Studio starting in December and last for five weeks until February 2010.
In the upcoming films, Rhodri's character is described as a staff from the Magical Maintenance Department and his identity will be borrowed by Ron Weasley.
