Reba McEntire is reuniting with Kevin Abbott, Michael Hanel and Mindy Schultheis — all executive producers from her hit series Reba — to create a new comedy pilot for NBC in collaboration with Universal Television. In addition to the Reba team, Julie Abbott also executive produces.
In the as-yet-untitled multi-cam project, Reba (McEntire) inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.
This is the first official pilot order for the 2024 broadcast pilot season, which was impacted by the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
McEntire is already part of the NBC family as she looks toward her second season on the hit competition series The Voice. She will join John Legend, Chance the Rapper and Dan + Shay as coaches holding court on Season 25, premiering February 26.

It will be a Reba reunion on the set of new Lifetime movie The Hammer. Reba McEntire will star with fellow Reba alum Melissa Peterman for the film inspired by the life of traveling circuit judge, Kim Wanker.
McEntire’s real-life partner Rex Linn (CSI: Miami) and Kay Shioma Metchie (Totally Normal) also star.
Per the logline, the film follows Kim Wheeler, an outspoken, firecracker lawyer who is appointed Judge of the 5th District of Nevada and is one of the few traveling judges left in America. After the reigning judge dies under suspicious circumstances, Kim finds herself covering a circuit that stretches between Las Vegas and Reno — a rugged, often desolate area where anything and everything can happen. With gavel in hand, she lays down the law with a no-nonsense brand of justice, that quickly earns her the nickname “The Hammer.” As...

McEntire and Peterman had a previous on-screen reunion in ABC Family’s Baby Daddy, and now they’ll play sisters in The Hammer. The movie is inspired by the real life of traveling circuit judge, Kim Wanker, “who hands down justice unlike anyone else,” as Lifetime describes. Her roots were planted in the past. Though her life was changing fast, who she was was who she wanted to be. Twenty years ago, the now defunct WB network introduced a family sitcom starring country music icon and American treasure Reba McEntire. Appropriately titled “Reba,” in the multicamera sitcom, McEntire plays Reba Hart, a recent divorcee who now has to handle being a single mother who worked too hard — but who also loves her kids and never stops.
Of course, outside of just the financial struggles of becoming a single mother (when the father was the breadwinner), this new normal was made even more difficult for Reba with the reveal that her eldest child, popular high school cheerleader Cheyenne (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), was impregnated by her himbo boyfriend, star high school football player Van (Steve Howey). "We want to sue the police... but we need witnesses." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie film titled Spiked, from filmmaker Juan Vera Martinez. He was inspired to make the film after hearing real-life stories of immigrants suffering abuse of power from law enforcement agencies some 20-years ago and incredibly moved by how relevant these stories are today as immigrant families continue to grapple with inhumane and unjust treatment over and over. When the murder of a migrant worker shakes a southwest border town to its core, the feud between a newspaper owner and the chief of police leads to the blurring of the truth and a dirty fight for justice. The film stars Aidan Quinn, Deirdre Lovejoy, Carlos Gomez, Danay Garcia, Wendy Makkena, Lovensky Jean-Baptiste, Walter Belenky, Sal Lopez, and Christopher Rich. It looks like a powerful drama about the struggles of many immigrants these days.

With Sundance in the rear view mirror and Berlin just around the corner, another huge festival that’s now very much in mind is the 2015 South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2015), to be held in Austin, Texas, this March. And this year, the lineup looks no less eclectic than in any previous year for the festival.
SXSW 2015 will see the debut of two big-studio comedies (Paul Feig’s Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy; and Etan Cohen’s Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart), some red-hot documentaries (none more so than Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine) and a vast array of smaller indie titles. Intriguingly, Judd Apatow’s Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck will be screened as a work-in-progress.
Elsewhere, Alex Garland’s well-received Ex Machina will be making an appearance, as will Ryan Gosling’s much-maligned Lost River. And curiously, there will be a...

Those who have been longtime readers often wonder about my fascination with ABC Family (well, and USA actually), and though I may not be a huge fan of every show the network offers, I am a very big fan of the overall theory the network puts forward. Heading your way tonight are not only two series that inspire my good will, but two specific episodes that make me even more of a fan.
Of the two, Melissa & Joey has more of a hook on me, and what better holiday effort for the fairly screwball show than to go back in time with “A Melanie & Josiah Christmas?” Having bucked the genre trend, and put the stars together without having to wait all that long, the show now has the opportunity to play around with “new couple” issues, and what better than the melding of traditions, something that oddly shows up sparsely in the television world.

Yesterday, Ed told you that This Week with George Stephanopoulos hired anti-gay pundit Laura Ingraham. Salon‘s Alex Pareene says that’s just the latest step in a rightward lurch for the Sunday morning talk show, one that involves hiring conservative pundits who make for terrible television. But, really, if you want to watch a Sunday morning talk show, you should be watching Up with Steve Kornacki. Under Kornacki, Up is a lot more political, and Kornacki has turned out to be incredibly skilled at asking the tough questions that cut to the truth of the matter.
It’s finally happening. EW says that NBC has scheduled The Maya Rudolph Show for May 19. The variety special will feature appearances by Sean Hayes, Kristen Bell, Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen, Craig Robinson and Chris Parnell with a performance by Jannell Monae. The variety show is a genre that has struggled on TV (oh,...

Special Effects Producer Harvy Lowry is making his feature film directorial debut with the psychological thriller, ‘Cassidy Way.’ The film, which is based on true events, follows young documentary filmmakers who get too close to the truth behind fracking in a small central California town. The movie stars Randy Wayne (‘The Lying Games’), Michael Nardelli (‘Nashville’), Nikki Moore (‘Sorority Row’), Christopher Rich (‘Reba’) and Rene Ashton (‘Criminal Minds’). “I’m extremely humbled to be working with such talented and dedicated filmmakers who all have the same goal in mind: reaching audiences around the world with an incredible story,” Lowry said of the film. “‘Cassidy Way’ is going to take anyone who [ Read More ]

After spending untold amounts of cash on hundreds of dramas and comedies — most of which will never make it to your living rooms — the five broadcast networks will begin announcing in New York next week which projects are good enough to earn a coveted fall pickup. (NBC and Fox will present their fall schedule to advertisers on Monday, followed by ABC on Tuesday, CBS on Wednesday and the CW on Thursday).
Buzz is already strong for several projects (for more on the hot ones, click here). But every year, we always wonder what diamond-in-the-rough was left on the cutting room...

And they’re off! Casting is all but completed and production has already begun on scores of pilots for the five broadcast networks. But not every comedy and drama will go the distance. Which project has the right stuff? What pilot already has you feeling like you popped a Lunesta? Check out the mammoth slate for fall consideration. (And remember, all projects are whittled down in late April/early May before the nets present their fall slates to advertisers in New York):

ABC's comedy comedy pilot has found the leads for its comedy pilot My Freakin' Family: Ellen Woglom and Ravi Patel. Christopher Rich also has been cast in the project, which centers on two young parents, Anna (Woglom) and Raj (Patel), whose lives change after they have a baby and the four grandparents with very different cultural backgrounds descend upon their lives to fight for the soul of their grandchild. Rich will play Anna's dad, an affable suburban cowboy. Harish Patel was previously cast as Raj's dad. Ravi Patel, repped by TalentWorks and Seven Summits, played the lead in Fox's comedy pilot Nevermind Nirvana last year. Janet McTeer is set to co-star in the Fox drama pilot Weekends at Bellevue. Based on Dr. Julie Holland's memoir, Bellevue centers on a psychiatrist in charge of the weekend shift of Bellevue Hospital psychiatric unit. McTeer, nominated for an Oscar in 2000 for Tumbleweeds,...

Melissa Peterman is happy about her new sitcom, if only because it lets her role-reverse with Reba McEntire.
As Barbra Jean on the long-running WB and CW sitcom "Reba," Peterman played the wife of McEntire's ex-husband. It'll be the other way around on "Working Class," a Country Music Television show that premieres Friday, Jan. 28. In the last of the first season's 12 episodes, country icon McEntire guest stars as the current spouse of single-mom Peterman's ex.
"The minute the show was picked up, I was like, 'That has got to happen!'" Peterman tells Zap2it. "The writers were immediately writing it, and I get to say things like, 'What kind of woman would barge into her man's ex-wife's house like she owns it?'
"That's essentially what I did for six years on 'Reba,' and it was so much fun to have her in that role. I have...
