- When he worked on The Brady Bunch (1969), he was reunited with fellow University of Michigan graduate Ann B. Davis (Alice).

- He returned to the University of Michigan after the war, where he received a bachelor's degree and master's degree in English. As a senior he had a part-time job as a DJ on a small local radio station.
- His second wife, Andrea, was an Executive Vice Chancellor at UCLA for many years. She was also the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from 1995-2005.
